It would have been a lie to say that their thoughts hadnât been occupied mostly by one particular person for the past little while. They were trying to do their best to keep the promise of space, to give Denna the chance to figure out what to do, without them trying to influence it even accidentally, but it was damn near impossible when all they could think of was how she made them feel. Not only did they want to keep feeling that, but they wanted to know she was okay, even if that mightâve meant losing everything themself.
Still, life went on, and they had to act as if nothing was happening to the outside world. They were just leaving their apartment to head to their parentsâ house, when suddenly out of nowhere Denna ran up towards them, no coat, no umbrella, a complete mess. Their first thought was panic, worried that there was something wrong, that she wasnât okay, but before they could ask, she started speaking.
Heath was so taken aback by her sudden appearance, and the words that came from her mouth in a breathless pant, that they could hardly comprehend what she was saying for a second. âWhoa, whoa, whoa, Denna, breathe,â they said, reaching out with their free hand and putting it on her shoulder, guiding her a little closer so that she was under their umbrella, even if that was pointless considering how soaked she was already. Only after a second did it hit them what she had said. They were so shocked, though, that it was hard to believe at first. âYouâre not? Are you sure? WhatâŠwhat changed? Youâre allowed to have more time, I promise, you donât have to make the decision now.â
âYou changed.â, she breathed out, though she quickly realised how insane that sounded.
âNo, thatâs not- itâs not like you yourself changed, you changed me. Meeting you changed my decision. I-â It wasnât so much that the words werenât coming out, but that she had so many things to say, so much she had been keeping quiet the last few days that she didnât know where to start. She didnât want to overwhelm them, for them to believe she had lost her mind; and she definitely didnât want to come off as too intense, though it was probably a little late to mend that. She let them pull her closer so the rain wasnât pouring over her any longer, and took a moment to take a breath.Â
âI kissed someone, some days ago.â Yikes, probably not the best starter there. âSomeone from my past, heâs not someone I love anymore, but that helped me realise something. I mean, it wasnât just that, but I guess that was the last thing that I needed. I felt horrible after it happened, and even though we were giving each other time, I wanted to tell you, because I donât want to lie to you, and I donât- I donât want to kiss anyone else really. And I donât want to write my article if that means Iâm going to hurt you, and I want to see where this goes.â Denna bit down her bottom lip, not sure of what she had just said. âUs. I want to be with you.â
She looked up at them, trying to find some kind of answer in their eyes. It was going to be complicated, obviously, and they were probably going to have to keep it a secret for a while; but it was the truth, her whole truth, and now they were the one with a decision to make. It was ironic how only hours ago they seemed to be the one chasing her, and now here she was, under the rain, opening up to them and waiting for them to have mercy.Â
