A brief review: yuru camp
Yuru camp, or laid-back camp as it’s called in English, is a 12 episode, slice of life series, primarily following two girls in particular, Rin, and Nadeshiko. Rin is a quiet, reserved introvert who enjoys camping in the winter when there are fewer people around. On one of her trips, she encounters Nadeshiko, a loud, exuberant, genki girl. After sharing some ramen the two become friends and the series kicks off from there. However this is where yuru camp shines: Rin does not come out of her shell. The loner becoming part of a group and learning the value of friendship is a well worn trope in anime, and yuru camp throws it out the window. When Nadeshiko joins her schools camping club, she invites Rin to join as well, but is turned down, bacause, as I I said before, Rin is an introvert who likes camping alone.
As an introvert myself, i can say with confidence that this show handles Rin’s character perfectly. She doesn’t hate camping with others, and happily joins nadeshiko on several occasions, but at the same time her first preference is to go it alone. Nadeshiko as well is quite refreshing, in that she immediately backs off once Rin declines her offer to join the club, and respects Rin’s boundaries.
The excellent portrayal of introverts aside, yuru camp is incredibly relaxing to watch. Moe shows of this sort are meant to be lighthearted and relaxing, but few do it quite this well. The show is very light on conflict, instead decoding to fill the time with characters enjoying their surroundings, talking about food and camping gear, or just doing camping things. Despite this, it never feels slow. I never felt bored, like the show was just trying to fill in the time.
Overal, I loved yuru camp. It isn’t likely to make you laugh, won’t make you hold your breath in any way, won’t even make you care deeply about the characters. But if you’re stressed, exhausted, if you’ve had a long day at work or just come back from dinner with the in-laws, then I can’t think of anything more perfect to help you relax. Therefore, i present it with the rating of 9 golden geese out of 10
