“ sure, though the notion of a little repainting does sound rather enticing. ” modern minimalism offered so drab an outlook, though alice was well aware it made for the safest amalgamation of the family's tastes; regardless, she ached for some lush reds, greens and perhaps even a yellow to litter a few of their common areas. something to break up the monotone it sports now. a roughhousing brawl too eagerly undertaken by her brothers would mean a necessary remodeling –– so, who was she to dissuade a little fun here and there? [ mostly, here! ] she grins, hands folded innocently behind her back as she lifts herself to her tiptoes, darling display of absolute angelic posture. guilt-free, might she add, which is perhaps a laughable idea for someone who can see into the future and, naturally, put a stop to any house-altering altercations well before they perform any lasting damage.
“ i'll play big sister if you need me to. strike a little fear of god into ed, maybe? you know, it's mostly his fault. ” she speaks with a knowing gaze, certain that were edward to be unable to hear her words, he'd most assuredly hear her thoughts echoing them. “ he's frightfully goading when he wants to be. a complete menace. ”

she's been going for hours; long open road behind her, dimly lit by street lamps spread out at least a mile apart from one another. there was no one around this part of the country –– the ground was clean of footsteps, no muddied prints along the pavement. just long stretches of asphalt in the middle of a vast sprawling green. it reminded her a little bit of hawkins, or rather the space surrounding it. the drive between there and the next city over, whenever her and mike and her mom would make it, was reminiscent of these empty acres. the in-between, nancy had called it in her head, eyes glued to passing green blurs outside her window, shutting out the sound of her brother's whining and mother's humming. now, as rain thundered down and the dark of night overcame her, she found herself stopped and stationary in the midst of this in-between, breaking the unspoken rules she'd believed were law as a child: the in-between doesn't exist, and so you can't stop here. a lot of the rules she'd set up for herself as a child had, of course, become obsolete by now.
in the trunk of her car is a black duffel bag which makes a clattering of noises as she lifts it and slings it over her shoulder. she grabs a gun from beneath the bag, already placed in its holster, and draws it, holding it close to her hip as she turns, now, towards the only structure visible in the expanse of this emptiness. as she steps up to the farm house door, she's met by an eager answer, as the door opens, and a woman appears.
CASSANDRA'S BURDEN LAY IN STAYING BEHIND, of knowing the danger and accepting it anyway: alice carries it with her now in a literal sense, having shuffled out the entirety of her family from their silly, temporary home in the middle of nowhere after having foreseen the arrival of someone, something, with a serpent's cunning, quick-footed on their path. this was the disadvantage of small towns; this and the lackluster shopping spots ... people talk. some of them don't shut up. talk and talk and talk about the oddities of the newcomers in town, how that doctor fellow has an unearthly quality about him, how the bookish, lanky brother & his odd, dancerly pixie of a sister seem almost like witches. how they're not sure exactly why, but something about that family just seems ... off.
the snake, however fleeting her presence in the small town, had seemed adept at the collection of these very stories, and more than this, was clever enough to piece it all together and find her way to their doorstep. of course, no match for the pixie's witchery & fast-acting schemes. without hesitation, and with edward astutely aware of the situation, she sent off jasper and the cullens to find another home, and stayed behind to ensure there would be no loose ends.
as she opens the door preemptively, right as the snake's arrived, she sports a dazzling grin, cocking her head to the side. “ isn't it a little late for visitors? ”

“ now, now .... ” her steps are so delicate, leading her towards the living room window, that she nearly appears to float –– an apparition who lifts her gentle fingers to draw the curtains, actions supernaturally precise, dreamily graceful, frightfully fast. with a smile she turns to her guest, clearing the bulk of the room to return by their side in the blink of an eye. “ flattery's fickle! and still overwhelmingly successful, on me. i'll be certain to make your funeral procession dazzling if i'm wrong. ” she offers a widespread grin, an optimist's shine glinting off the whites of her teeth in preemptively triumphant display.
she typically dissuades confidence in her schemes, if only to make the point that even apollonian foresight is still reliant on the fates and their whims. however many strings she can see stretched thin between destinies and outcomes, there is always a chance she finds herself blind. for nox's sake, however, she finds herself overcompensating –– to let down so darling a freckle-faced creature? absolute blasphemy; she'd play the part of infallible to offer them at least some sense of ease. “ smooth sailing, i assure you. quiet night, easy daybreak, everything you could want in a temporary hideout. i told you i have remarkable contacts everywhere, i'm always well-equipped to find a spot to lay low. ”
