it was fifteen minutes past three a.m., when a loud knocking roused you from your fitful sleep. groggily, you wiped the sleep from your eyes, wondering who the hell was threatening to knock your door off its hinges. you peered into the peephole, your eyes widening in surprise when you realized that the university's varsity baseball team was outside your door.
you flung it wide open, regarding them with apprehension, "why're you here at this ungodly hour?" you asked, pulling your thin cardigan tighter around your baggy t-shirt.
you assessed their sheepish faces, your eyes finally landing on an unconscious kenji sato whom they were propping upright with their arms. it was ichiro suzuki, the team's outfielder, who answered.
"sorry, we know it's late," he started, flashing you what he'd hoped was a charming smile. you did not return it. his confidence momentarily faltered. "we just didn't know where to take sato. bugger didn't want to stay at the hospital."
"and you think bringing him here was...a brilliant idea?" you asked, crossing your arms over your chest as a bewildered expression formed on your features. the team collectively sang their apologies.
akinori, the pitcher, fixed his hold on kenji who was by the by slowly slipping unto the floor the longer the conversation continued. "he was asking for you," he said with great difficulty as kenji's head lolled back.
"coach was riding him hard with the championship coming up," kazuhito chimed in, his big brown eyes shooting you a pleading look. "he's a little sick. we bought you supplies and medicine. he just needs a place to crash for tonight."
you sighed as you ran a hand through your hair in frustration. "fine, bring him in," you acquiesced, stepping aside to let them into your dorm room. they lugged him inside and none too gently deposited him on your bed. they placed their purchases on your little dining table and left with many thanks.
you approached sato wearily. the two of you were not close. sure, words and cookies were exchanged but that was about the extent of your relationship. occasional pleasantries. a hi and hello every time you passed each other in the hallway or at school.
he was shivering atop your cot. you pressed a hand to his forehead, and drew it away quickly. he was burning up. you hurried to the kitchen where the boys had left the bags, hoping to find something to help bring his fever down. you rummaged through them and came up with Koolfever patches for kids and Tylenol. The rest of the items consisted of food and snacks.
"this'll have to do," you murmured under your breath as you returned to sato's side. coaxing the giant of a man to turn over, you considered cutting open his shirt.
"kenji," you said softly, caressing his face gently to rouse him. he blearily opened his eyes and his voice raspy once he recognized you. he pulled himself upright with great effort. "y/n? what're you doing h-here?" he asked weakly, squinting his eyes at you.
"need you to drink this," you said, placing the pill on his hand and raising a glass of water to his mouth. kenji obeyed with no questions. "good boy. now i need you to take off your shirt. it's drenched with sweat."
"n-never thought youโyou'd be t-this forward, y/n," kenji said sluggishly as he attempted to pull his shirt over his shoulders. you scoffed good-naturedly. "in your dreams, sato."
"this is my dream, y/l/n." he said with a goofy grin. "you're all in m-my head." he added, a goofy grin playing on his lips.
your heart raced (momentarily) (lie) as he bared himself before you. his upper torso was tough, lean, and sinewy. you dare not think of what the lower half looked like.
"see," kenji began, looking up at you with flushed cheeks. "all yours now. this. all you needed to do was ask."
you bit the inside of your cheek to keep from dissolving into a puddle. your hands were clammy as you pushed him back onto your bed. "i'm here on babysitting shift. you're sick. feverish. i just needed to bring your temperature down."
you peeled off a KoolFever patch and slapped it on his forehead. kenji sighed in relief at the cool sensation it afforded him. you stood to get a wash basin with cool water. kenji caught your hand, opening one eye to look at you. "where're you going?" he asked strangledly.
"i just need to get something," you replied, offering a reassuring smile. he did not let go, instead his grip tightened. "no. can't โ don't leave."
with surprising strength, he yanked you on top of him. you landed squarely on his smooth, bare chest. his heartbeat thundered loudly in its cage. his other free arm wrapped itself around your waist, securing you to his frame.
"kenjiโ" you protested.
"no." he said shortly, not shy about making himself comfortable with you on your bed. he turned sideways, trapping you effectively between the wall and his chest.
"i just โ"
he growled each time you squirmed to break free from his grasp.
"i need to get you a cool towel, hotshot."
"my dream, my rules." he groused, burying himself into your hair and taking a deep breath.
"pretty, pretty." he cooed into your hair, his breath tickling you. "s'all mine."
he was mumbling incoherently. strings of sweet nothings. voice dripping in need and honey. every time you thought he had stopped, more tiny confessions spilled from his lips.
"waited so long, sweetheart."
"always wanted you."
"god, jus' needed your smile, baby."
"should've asked you out a long time ago, sunshine, coulda saved myself the trouble."
"soft, soft baby."
"we should stay like this 'til next week, baby. my baby."
there was a heart rending tenderness in the way he traced soothing patterns on your spine. he was asleep, but his grip never slackened. meanwhile, you'd given up escaping. for the time being. a curious swooping pulled at your innards. the sweetly intoxicating musk of his body overwhelmed your senses. your pulse skittered with excitement and your heartbeat thumped erratically.
you hadn't even considered him like that.
lie.
you'd thought he was thinking of someone else, but every little movement you made had him whispering your name reverently. kenji sato did not strike you as a sleep talker. awake, he was irresistible. asleep, even more so. heaven help you when he wakes.
