could you share what it was like going sober for you? -sincerely, long time follower and new time sober-er

This is kinda long and meandery. Sorry for grammar and spelling!

I don't really have a deeply inspirational story around going sober. I got diagnosed with cirrhosis after I started seeing doctors when I developed acites and edema after losing a LOT of weight. It was pretty easy to quit drinking after all that, I really just didn't want to die (or make things worse). I didn't have any relapses or do any counseling programs like AA, though my liver doctor kept trying to pressure me to because relapse is so common.

I remember talking to my gastrointerologist about how I kind of felt bad about how easy is was to quit, since quitting is something people have a lot of trouble with, but she told me I should have pride in myself and gratitude that it was this easy in the first place, and that perspective sort of helped me a lot, mentally.

Withdrawal wasn't that bad, I didn't get sick or anything. I had to go on ensure (nutrition shakes) for two weeks and take potassium and lactulose (lactulose helps you rid your blood of excess ammonia that can build up in your blood when you liver doesn't work so well). I did have night sweats for about half a year and my facial skin was really bad for maybe a year and a half (greasy with lots of breakouts). I gained all my weight back (I was 160 at my smallest and went back up to 270 in about three years because sugar kind of replaced alcohol). I also think the stress around finding work was a distraction from the changes my body was going through.

But yeah, quitting never really hit me too hard. I've been around drunk people plenty of times and never had a craving or felt like I was missing out.

SInce I gained all that weight back I am on glp-1 for prediabetes but otherwise I don't take any medication but I do have to get regular ultrasounds of my liver. Funnily enough since my drink of choice was gin and tonic, I still have a taste for tonic and drink it fairly regularly but with those torani syrups and chia seeds.

Anyway, I don't know if that's inspirational or not, but I commend you on your sobriety and choosing health, and wish you ease on your transition to a new lifestyle!
