Are you paralyzed by choosing colors?
The #1 reason homeowners typically seek out a professional decorator for assistance is out of fear of choosing colors (particularly paint colors) on their own. I’ve had people tell me that they are “paralyzed”, “terrified” and “stressed” over the thought of choosing colors for their home. Homeowners recognize that color in their rooms is important; most even accept that different colors evoke different feelings in a space and that often friends and family can be downright judgmental about color choices.
When I begin a color consultation with a client, I often ask “If I were to open your closet, what colors would I find in your wardrobe?” What one wraps themselves with in their clothing is typically indicative of what they would want to be surrounded by in their favorite room. Another question is “How do you want people to feel in this room?” If they respond, “calm, relaxed, quiet” I would hedge towards recommending cool colors (e.g. blues, greens, grays); if they respond, “warm and cozy” I tend towards the warm shades (e.g. reds, oranges, yellows, browns). Finally, I take a look around to see if there are any focal points or decorative elements that lend themselves towards being the color inspiration for the space.
Coordinating colors in a single room is both an art and science, as I often say! There are basic principles of the color wheel and other guiding rules in color balance to take into consideration for the most pleasing to the eye and visually interesting results. And certainly the flow and relationship from one room to another can be challenge. But ultimately I tell clients, ”you’re the one that’s living in the space so color choices need to reflect you and you have to love them (despite what others may think).”
