Google selling Motorola to Lenovo

So pretty much the big news of today, Google who acquired Motorola about 2 years ago is now selling them off to Lenovo. 

I'm not gonna look into the whole money perspective here, they sold them for less, but it might have been a valuable deal anyway - nothing more to say on that. 

The reason I'm putting this up is my concern of Moto's future, not that Lenovo will ruin Motorola, because I'm sure they will get to make some cool phones. Yet Google had great success with Motorola, their recent phones Moto G and Moto X, is pretty much prime examples on how Android phones should be made. 

The Moto G is the best phone ever in it's price range, and the Moto X is a piece of art - Just look at thouse wooden back casings.. *drool* 

Google did a good job with Motorola, and I must say tgat I highly doubt and Lenovo will be able to keep up the super quality, to a very good and low price.

We all hate paperwork! But usually it's a very good idea to keep some receipts, let's say when you buy expensive electronics. Expensify is your friend in need! The opportunity to upload receipts and put in your different expenses, putting them in categories so you get a better view of it all.

Time to learn how to program android

The University of Maryland have decided to give up a free course of how to program applications for android. This is something I've always wanted but never really felt i had the time. 

Now I've pretty much finished my real life education in economics. (I have my final exam the 11th of feb. - wrote my final paper about Bitcoin, but thats a whole other story)

Back to topic, this is a very serious course with a final paper in the end and so on. It's free and I now seem to have the time so why not, I think it will be pretty cool to devote some more time to the device and system I love so very much. Hopefully I'll pick up a thing or two that could be useful!

Finally managed to fix the transparent statusbar! Really smooth and clean, if I have to say it myself.

Home screen / launchers, all about bringing new life to your phone. Pretty much half of the time you look at your screen, you spend at your home screen. It’s important to keep it new and fresh to keep your boring old smartphone alive and fresh! This is my current setup, it’s made in Nova Launcher Prime, with the “Motif” icon pack and wallpaper. It’s all a preference but I like having a dark and minimalistic screen, this is still very much a work in progress.. I’m still fighting with nova to make my status bar transparent, it should be possible as I am on 4.4.2

The Oppo Find 5, probably a very unknown phone to many, but it's actually a pretty awesome phone, Chinese brand, but some of the parts are not just the everyday Chinese junk you find in any noname phone.. The Oppo Find 5 is actually a monster when looking at the price, and it comes with only a few trade-offs.

The screen is stunning, 5 inch full HD resolution 1080x1920, 441 PPI, I can literally not ask for a better screen.

The rest of is specs also speaks for it self:

16GB HDD* (Also available in 32GB)

2GB RAM

13 MP Camera (Sony)

1.5 GHz QuardCore Processor

Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE capable) 

Rest of the specs are of lesser importance, these are usually the big deals when looking at a phone. *Note, out of the 16GB only 2GB are available for apps! This is a problem other 3rd party developers are currently trying to address, but it takes a rather technical approach to solve. 

The nifty thing about Oppo and their phones are that they allow you to root, and throw on custom roms without voiding your warranty! This is a huge plus, especially when you look at Oppo's own android overlay / version - Color OS.

Color OS is pretty and all, but it's not the most stable OS I've seen, and it's fairly hard on the battery, Oppo works hard on their OS and they throw out rather frequent updates, but even then they are no masters of building the best OS, which is why we are lucky to go play with 3rd party roms without losing our precious warranty!

I mentioned that Oppo's own Color OS is hard on the battery and that's no lie, unfortunately most other roms are too. I can't really tell if the battery is too bad, or if the screen is too good, or well actually I'm pretty sure it's a combination.

It needs quite a bit of fiddling and tweaking to get a decent battery time, but it is definitely possible.

The phone itself is €300 which is ridiculously cheap for it's specs, it includes one of Oppo's flip covers (which is rubbish, mine already started to go apart after 3 weeks of rather light usage) and a charger. 

If you are into custom roms and playing a bit with kernel settings, greenify, and a few power optimizations. You get a real killer phone for a small payout! If not, I would probably look somewhere else.

Google should do something about this

Now I don't use many chrome extensions, but I find a selected few very useful! Luckily it seems that I have yet to be a victim of these crimes, but I still think that it's destroying the extension market which is very saddening.

You've properly heard of reddit, at least I hope so, seriously if you haven't leave my blog and go to reddit.com asap! 

Anyway when you've experienced reddit, and got to love the place like I do, you need to "reddit" all the time, even when your not at a pc, redditing on the toilet for example is the most awesome thing ever! For that to happen you need a reddit app, there is a ton out there. 

For a long period i used reddit news, but I recently made a switch to "Flow for Reddit", even though it's still a pre-beta, it's still a hell of an awesome app, to me it's really stable and it seems very smooth! 

Off you go, reddit some and check back for more app picks tommorow!

I'm not gonna lie, I really do love my HTC One, it's an amazing phone, and it's really beautiful. When thats said, I am overly jelly about the new back finishes for the Moto X.

Box.com, Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive etc. We have a ton of cloud storages, but which is most secure, which seems most effective and which have most functionality. 

The good thing about Dropbox and Google Drive is the instantaneous photo upload. Which is a nice feature; on the other hand, they are both fairly small unless you're going to throw money after them. Dropbox I believe starts on 2GB and Drive on 15GB. If you can live without the photo upload you might just consider MEGA!

50GB cloudstorage right off the bat! Free and as safe as it gets! 

The security of MEGA is top priority, and your password means everything there is a good and a bad thing about how MEGA handles security and your password, the good thing is it’s about the most secure cloud service you can get, and if you remember your password you have the best cloud drive of them all. However if you tend to forget your passwords MEGA ain’t for you – because you cannot retrieve a lost password, if you can’t remember and don’t figure it out, you won’t ever see your files again. No password retrieval is just an extra layer in security, and personally I like it.

Why MEGA? Because it’s bigger and better and more secure! Simple as!

The magnificent OmniROM!

Why is Omni good, and why do I use it you may ask? Well for people who know a bit about custom roms in the first place, there have always been a few bigger roms on the market, one of them being Cyanogenmod. I'm not going to lie, I used to like CM a lot, but it kinda fell out of my flavor for different reasons. 

At a later post I'll try to break out different rom types and publishers. 

Back to Omni, why is it great and fun to use? 

Omni is full AOSP, not build from CM base, its build from scratch! The amazing thing is that the base code is for everyone to pick up and adapt to their device. Unfortunately for myself I'm not yet geeky enough to make my own builds, but Omni is available to a ton of devices, and is updated daily! 

The rom itself aims to give the perfect android experience, it tried to make everything open source, and it strives to protect our privacy! 

All in all it's a very stable rom, and the best thing ever, it has OTA updates! No need for me to download files and load them on my phone or tablet every night! No, the phone simply downloads the updates itself, and tells me its time to flash (automated process) I just need to hit the update now button, and I'm all done! 

 I can only reccomend this rom for people to try out! Head over to Omni and see of it's available for your device!
