ofgoodconscience:
Well, that certainly backfired. Jean-Luc had not been prepared after all, and it’s no clearer than in the way he recoils physically and mentally from Q’s admission, hoping to whatever other god there may or may not be out there that the expression on his face isn’t so easy to read. “I–” What to say now? He certainly doesn’t have the words, or the means to comprehend his own feelings. It’s unfair that Q finds it so easy to vocalize. “I always had this sense… but I convinced myself you were always playing a game, using us, using me.”
“If I had intended to ‘use’ you I would have been far more aggressive and far less concerned about rejection.” In Q’s opinion it was Jean-luc who had been playing games. He’d always felt maybe something was returned but he always felt buffeted back when he tried pushing things. “But being rejected by you has a way of wounding me. I don’t like it.” He prepares to leave, assuming that he wont like what he hears next. Some diplomatic rambling about the appropriate behaviour of a Captain. Or worse still, some gentle handed turn down that does little to spare these feelings he has.
ofgoodconscience:
Their relationship has always been complicated. Feelings admitted or not, emotions shown or spoken in many ( or not so many ) words. And Jean-Luc has always been grateful for it, even when they fought, even when they argued and bickered and even when he hated the entity, he always loved him so deeply too. And he knew Q had felt the same, but no relationship could possibly have worked. What they have reaches far beyond that anyway. He missed Q, all these years. But he won’t admit that either.
“I need you to… temporarily halt whatever is happening to me. There is something I must do, a mission I must take. The survival of someone very important to me, and the success of a cause I hold very dear, is dependent on my ability to complete this trip.” He sighs. “Despite what my other friends seem to think, this is not some final grand hurrah, no tour of past haunts for the sake of nostalgia. There is a life, an innocent life at stake here, and I am the only one who can save her. I cannot die before it is done.” He draws in a breath, the vulnerability of his request making it feel like his chest is collapsing.
“I will offer a trade-off, because I know this could take a long time. When it is done, my life will end. I have no need to die heroically in battle like a Klingon, nor a desire to live out the rest of my days as an invalid in a vineyard. All I ask is that I’m out there, among the stars, and that it is peaceful.” He stops walking again, turns to Q, eyes expectant, and he holds both of his hands in his own. “Will you do this for me, old friend?”
Q listened carefully to his request. Oh. The gravity was not lost on Q. Yes, so long had passed. So long that he’d missed his chances to come and pester him. It wasn’t often Q even cared about the passage of time, so irrelevant it seemed arbitrary. But not here. Here time had meaning.
The use of the term ‘old friend’ has Q swallowing something down. He couldn’t even tell what emotion it was, never having to have done it before. “On one condition of my own.” He counters softly, kissing his knuckles with gentle reverence. “That I’m there with you for your end. I promise you there will be peace and stars.”
A thought came to Q and he squeezed Picard’s hands gently, biting his lip as he looked him in the eye in a way that was probably a little too confronting. Q didn’t have a lot of practice with conversing like this. “And I have a request, you’re free to deny it, it wont change my helping you.” He paused for a moment before going on again. “I’d like to be on your crew. Incognito. Should there be... down time during travel. I’d like to spend some of it with you.”
//Look at the idiots I found at my fave second hand toy shop
It’s not mean, it’s truthful.”

“ I don’t even know what the Hell a cotton-headed ninny muggins is!”
“Then why are you so mad?” Q defended.

“He wont stop crying.” Q pleaded, standing in front of Reg’s door in his pyjamas. “I’ve fed him, I’ve bounced him, I’ve done the silly faces. He’s inconsolable.” The entity sounded desperate, bouncing Jr some more in his arms. “I need help, he never cries like this with you.”

Thrilling. Jean-Luc shakes his head, not bothering to hide his amusement at that. But he smiles, noticing how the grip on his arm tightens, and without even thinking, he raises his other hand to rest there, covering Q’s. He appreciates the silence as he talks, knowing it must be killing Q to not interject or cut him off. More grateful still is he to realize that the entity isn’t jumping to make any demands – or any offers of omnipotence to save his life. He’s never wanted it – not when he was younger and not faced with his own nearing morality, and not now.
His eyes go back to the ground, not wanting to look at Q once again. He’s not sure he can handle it. He’s being so tender, something Jean-Luc rarely experienced from him on the Enterprise. Have they really both gotten so much older? “I know,” he says finally. “I know how much you hate it. And I hope you know I’m grateful that you’re not trying to convince me to let you make me like you. It would be easier, wouldn’t it? That’s what you’ve always wanted for me. But our mortality is what makes us human. Our lives would not be worth living if we could live forever. Sometimes I wish you could really understand that. Part of me always thought it was a shame the continuum took you back.” He’s…. not joking per se, but his tone is light. No need to bring down the conversation more than he already has.
“But I do have a…. favor to ask you. And know that I wouldn’t ask it if it were only my life at stake.”
But Q did understand, he’d learned quite a bit about Picard and had been putting it into practice. He listened to him, still, talk about how he wouldn’t accept such a thing. Because he liked hearing it even though it hurt. At the mention of him regretting that the Q took him back he wanted to remind him that he would have perished, sacrificing himself for the good of the ship. He wanted to ask. What if he left the Q? What if he chose mortality instead of having it thrust upon him. “I don’t need to be separate from the continuum to understand. I know my offer would be a selfish and self defeating thing.” He protests softly, having long since understood what made the man so special to him. “But let me hear this favour. I know you don’t ask lightly.” He soothes still relishing in their closeness and not wanting it to stop.

Oh, seeing the omnipotent entity today was just g r e a t.
She looked up from the table, having been trying to work (of course he comes to bug her while she’s trying to work), and sighs. What else could she do but entertain him for a few moments, at least until he got bored and went to bother someone else?
“Hello Q. What are you planning to do to ruin our days today?”
“Rude.” Q puffed. He’d originally come to see Data. Whom found the least logic in ostracizing him for his past actions. But who happened to be away the day he’d decided to drop in. “If anything is ruining a day, it’s your sour face.” He made a childishly grouchy expression. “Where’s your sense of fun?”
“It’s a lovely morning on the USS Enterprise, and you are a horrible Q.“ (for DrWho42 on twitter)

“Q, it’s just a gray hair.” It wasn’t even the first that Reg had discovered. But it was the first that his immortal partner knew about. And he had a sneaking suspicion he knew what the sudden worried look on his face meant. “Humans get gray hairs. I promise, it’s nothing to worry about.”
Oh but Q knew what grey hairs meant. The passage of time was never something Q could get fully used to. Not seeing it slowly change the people he cared for anyway. And it would change them until they were dust. Dust he could scarcely hold. He had a while to go before Reg was that far along though. He masked his worry with a tender smile, toying with the small curl of hair behind Reg’s ear that always seemed to flick out. “Right. Sorry. Back to the movie.” He sunk back down beside him.
spocks-thyla:
“Unsurprising?” This last puzzled Leonard slightly, pushing the matter of their mirrorverse torture temporarily aside. No one had seen their relationship coming except Jim, who had shoved them at each other on the bridge one day, resulting in a minute-long kiss. “You’re tellin’ me you knew?”
“Of course I knew. The way you two look at eachother. The way you three look at each-other. Huddled together like some cheap facsimile of a proper hivemind.” He brushed something imaginary off his robes. “You’ve always been enamoured with one another. It was inevitable.” He chuckled softly.
ofgoodconscience:
“Why do you assume I’m not prepared?” Q’s right of course, he’s very likely not – no matter what it is. But it doesn’t matter. He wants to know. he can’t stand not knowing. How could Q say he already knows the answer? He suspects, surely, but he never can truly tell. Sometimes it seems like Q doesn’t even know. And not fully understanding his own feelings, there’s no certainty at all. “You don’t want to admit it. Do you?”
Q gave Jean-luc a look that expressed the exasperation of being asked if he, an omnipotent being, was assuming something. He took a few steps closer, getting right into his space without physically touching him. He was, of course, right about not wanting to say it. Because if he said it, he’d have to hear rejection. Or. He had to deal with acceptance. And what it might mean to try and stay with him. Because he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt Jean-luc would not become a Q for him. He rose to the challenge, though, unwilling to back down. “Don’t be foolish. It’s you I want. It’s always been you.”
The Darkest Minds (New Thread)
soongtypefrankenstein:
There wasn’t even a pause at the last syllable when a fist just rammed the omnipotent being. Lore normally never had to resort to physical violence (usually threatening to pop someone’s head off was more than enough incentive to get what he wanted) but this….
This was an extremely rare exception.
He used his full strength to physically attack Q, a look of animalistic rage and uninhibited glee across his face.
“ Oh, I’m sorry, was that TOO MUCH for the Great and Powerful Q?!”
The power of the punch sent Q spinning off the surface he’s been lounging on. The room shook and Lore was sent back into a wall with twice the force he’d used on the entity. “You want to play? I was under the impression you considered yourself intelligent.” He hadn’t destroyed Lore yet. “You’re just lucky I have a soft spot for stupid things.”
ofgoodconscience:
It’s hard to imagine Q with responsibilities, harder still to imagine him carrying them out dutifully. Jean-Luc feels an odd swell of pride in his chest. His intention had never been to change Q. He had always been the one changing – usually for the better, even if he didn’t care to admit it. And in fact, he always figured Q was incapable of changing, incapable of being exactly who he had showed himself to be, time and time again. It seems he was wrong.
“I don’t know that I’d call that a bad influence, but of course you would. I’d say I’m proud, but I’m sure you’d hate to hear that.” He laughs, truly laughs, even if its small, short-lived. And then they stroll, arm-in-arm, and it’s strangely peaceful and not at all how he had imagined he’d be spending his day. He almost doesn’t want to ruin the mood. “You know I resigned from Starfleet.” He assumes Q must know. “The reasons…. don’t matter now. But something has come up, just in the last few days.” Despite his calm demeanor, his voice holds some of its old intensity, speaking with a fervor he hasn’t felt in quite a long time. “I asked an old Doctor friend of mine if he could clear me for service, so I could be reinstated again. There’s something I have to take care of.”
He falls silent. It seems there’s more he wants to say, but he can’t get the words out. Even now, he has too much pride. And he finds himself wishing Q would just go into his mind and see the answer, if only so he doesn’t have to say it.
But that wouldn’t be right. It wouldn’t be fair.
“He discovered a… complication. Something up here…” and he reaches up, tapping the side of his head, “Is not sound. A defect… well, Doctor Crusher found it, years and years ago. And I’d thought nothing of it, or ignored it, or something else foolish. But… ha. You knew about that.” After all, the discovery of the defect, and his subsequent diagnosis of Irumodic Syndrome, had been due to the future timeline Q had showed him during their last meeting. “Didn’t you?” Oh well. Whether or not Q had known – wether or not anyone could have suspected – it does not matter now. “He says eventually, it will be fatal. He suspects it sooner rather than later. And I believe, possibly, that I may already be experiencing symptoms.”
At the mention of hating the pride Jean-luc felt, he chuckled softly and shook his head. “There was a time when I would have considered your opinion condescending and certainly I would have resented it. But now? I have to say hearing it... it’s thrilling.” Q tightened his grip on Picard’s arm, listening to him carefully and being mindful not to interrupt him. Of course he’d known, once he’d felt the tug he’d done a cursory glance of his situation. Not enough to glean time, obviously, but enough to know that his dear captain was no longer serving. Ah yes. The complication. The troubling little thing he’d avoided looking at after he’d discovered it. Agonized over what to do. In the end he knew the right answer was to do nothing. He’d never known the man he held onto now to enjoy going against the natural order of things if he could help it. Or at least when it involved Q’s powers. His meddling was seldom welcome. “I’ve always hated looking at your demise. Even if it is what makes you so much more precious.” Q begins, fingers stroking the crook of his elbow tenderly. He looks sad. “I’ve even thought of denying fate your presence. And giving you an opportunity to join me. But something in the back of my thoughts knows you’d rather face what’s been there waiting for you. Isn’t that right?” It was that quality in him that was so alluring. He didn’t want power, he wasn’t afraid of his demise. He just wanted to make the best of what he had and that was enough. It fascinated him.
