When hipsters, Starbucks, & bike lanes pop up in your hood.
Gentrification
Detroit
How is that inferior to 16 year-olds shooting each other
or selling crack outside the convenience store?
or harassing everyone who walks down the street for being in their “hood”?
Let be veryyyyyyyyy clear, 99.9999% of residents do not sell crack. Let’s talk about how crack and other drugs were brought into these neighborhoods to bring it down. Driving down property rates so that developers could buy properties for cheap & move in people like you at a higher cost . Let’s not mention that the MAJORITY of hipsters moving into these neighborhoods are DRUG USERS. & they harass you for being in their hood? The place where they grew up? The place you’re trying to change? And move them out of? Let me know when they burn crosses on your yard, or put in place laws that keep you out of these neighborhoods.
The first two comments are how racists justify gentrification. They imagine that black people in dilapidated areas are all just drug dealers and gang members so it doesn’t matter if they push people out of their homes and communities. Racists think it’s better to put money into building cupcake and bike shops than to invest money in these communities I see my beautiful Brooklyn overrun by spoiled racist white people who are comfortable being a part of gentrification for these very racist reasons. And it makes me sick to my stomach
The last two comments (Iamchinyere & youngblackandvegan) gave me LIFE. It is pure, unadulterated TRUTH.
Studies show that there is more drug use in white neighborhoods, mostly prescription drug abuse by white suburban kids and moms. It is also the leading cause of accidental overdose and has been rising so fast the CDC put out a notice about the rise in white deaths for the first time.
It’s just a priority of police to police black neighborhoods because they a trained in what “suspicious” looks like. But when you look at the data for something like stop and frisk, the percentage of white people found with drugs and/or weapons has actually been much higher than that of blacks that were stopped.
I’m just saying if I was going to be racist about drug abusers and people who carry weapons I would start with the data.
I live in a white middle class aka a thousandaire neighborhood and white folks are out here dropping like flies from drug overdoses. I couldn’t even get the pain pill I needed when I had oral surgery because all of the pharmacies were out of them. I had to take an Advil.
I’m literally surrounded by crack dens, marijuana grow houses and gang violence. Crackers, please come save me.
That’s not how it works
Question: where were these developers during the previous 40 years of drug infested Detroit neighborhoods? Because housing has been shit for that long. Why are they only buying land now? It ain’t the drugs. In fact, it’s the fact that so many people moved out during the recession that the land is finally priced at what it’s worth. This ain’t about gentrification. I’ve lived in Detroit before the rebuild. I’d rather live there now that it’s coming back.
It’s not about “developers” it’s about your government. Why did people move out? Because the government pulled money from education, closed schools. They do this in every poor black city. Cut resources let the schools go to shit, the residents move out, THEN the developers come because it’s cheap. It’s like when your landlord wants you to move out so they can get richer residents. They stop fixing your building, if you’re not getting heat & nothing is getting fixed you move out. Now once people start moving out they start fixing up the building which attracts a more affluent set of people. Before he rebuild was all strategy
^^^a condensed term that is Municipal Disinvestment, in case if people want to research more into it. Started with the idea of “benign neglect” by Daniel Patrick Moynihan (the idea if you leave something alone, it’ll fix itself – kinda like how some people suggest leaving a baby alone when it’s crying will help it learn to fend for itself). Moynihan said benign neglect was made to ease tensions after the Civil Rights Movement, and the term was adopted by government officials to justify municipal disinvestment.
^^Let’s not forget white flight, redlining, and housing and public assistance discrimination. All intentional practices meant to (further) disenfranchise low income minority, specifically Black, communities and maintain economic and social opportunity disparity. Link that with the school-to-prison pipeline, and it’s like they don’t even need to push us out or lock us in these communities anymore. They just either defund schools, which discourages new teachers and stretches existing resources thinner, or wreck homelives with prejudicial policing.
But what’s new pussycat?
Gentrification also brings down the black family owned/ small businesses that actually help grow and give back to the community
Their leases go up or they get unwarranted complaints from gentrifiers that will do anything to “clean up the crime/bad apples” (aka drive out the black people) if anything its gentrification that fucks up black neighborhoods not the black people themselves
Stop watching stereotyped tv and believing everything ya racist uncle says at thanksgiving
My white roomates in college did more drugs than I’ve ever seen in my life…
I go to a PWI and hear nothing but white and Asian kids talking about smoking weed, doing lines of coke and using popping pills but y’all mfs wanna act oblivious to it.
