so, someone made a comment about how ‘marriage isn’t always about love’ in regards to emily marrying miguel and while i agree that can be the case–i’ve written margaery tyrell for three years, i kinda got that down–i don’t believe it can be applied to emily & miguel.
first, i can see how the argument for such a thing can be made. miguel is ambitious and calculating and pretty much all of his personal relationships have a dual purpose–supporting him as a person but also as the head of the cartel. (we even see that with dita, his own mother) but you can see from every interaction he has with emily that this isn’t the case. with her, he’s not Galindo, capital g. he’s just miguel–confident and cocky but still just miguel to her.
more importantly, i don’t peg emily as the sort to purposefully ‘marry up,’ so to speak. though she’s changed a lot since high school and her relationship with ez, i think we can look to that to see how she approaches romantic relationships. she was completely at ease with ez, confident in who she was and who she was with him. (and that’s part of why their relationship lasted as long as it did & why it hurt so much when it ended.) i don’t think emily would ever have been comfortable with a marriage of convenience (though it’s hard to make that argument anyways, as she didn’t exactly come from a wealthy or well-known family.)
nor would she enter a marriage that would require her to become someone other than who she is on principle. she has a well-developed sense of self and pride–something she and miguel share.
now, have the events in mayans so far shaken her confidence? yes. her child was literally ripped from her arms. those responsible mock miguel–and by extension, emily herself–with the videos they post, effectively digger the knife in deeper. is she perhaps questioning things miguel has told her and perhaps e en things she’s told herself? yes. but these things, these calamitous events do not negate the valid, loving relationship she has–yes, still has–with miguel. any relationship would be shaken by this sort of shit.
so, i’m not saying that their relationship isn’t being tested and that they will get through it unscathed. a lot can happen and we know that things are about to tip into chaos of some kind. some things may come up that they won’t be able to reconcile with. but let’s just not assume that it’s because their marriage isn’t valid.
tldr; emily is confident and secure in who she is and, though she has doubts like most humans, this does not mean she married miguel for money or power or security. she married him because she loves him and because she wanted a life with him. g o o d b y e
