My theme was gender. After thinking about the assignment I came to the conclusion that gender was something very personal, something formed from preconceived notions, and experiences. I still come from the mindset that gender is something that is done to something. To be gendered would mean to be assigned a value and an assortment of adjectives. Often times the very act of assigning a gender to something changes people’s ideas, thoughts and in some instances, expectations. Even the simple act of looking for something or an object that has some sort of gendered theme invokes the very principle of gendering the item itself. In some instances I found myself looking for gender where gender simply did not exist. I enjoyed this introspective exercise as it allowed me to see what I immediately thought of gender, it allowed me to mentally take note of what I assumed and explore what I did not understand.
