For the love of old houses: While exquisite to look at, a single kathkhuni house requires more than a hundred trees to create the structure. The craft takes up so much timber hence is impossible to make today because of forest regulations. Why they can’t farm new trees for timber instead of getting from the forest, no one knows. All I know is concrete houses are an eyesore in Himanchal’s landscape, as well as anywhere in the world. I wish the woodwork craft makes a comeback with sustainable wooden alternatives.
