i love pleasantly unpleasant sensory experiences. getting tattooed. eating a too-big dollop of wasabi and feeling like i've been kicked in the face. being outside when it is very very cold and a little kiss of frigid air slipping between my glove and coat sleeve. people say building discomfort tolerance is important because discomfort is an inevitable part of life, and that's true, but discomfort can also be a source of joy and part of what makes life worth living.

Coral Cabinet – Second half of the 16th century

Archduke Ferdinand II purchased coral from merchants in Genoa (1581) and Venice (1590). The imported coral was probably assembled into cabinets in Innsbruck or Munich. Besides coral, the cabinet contains South Pacific shells, delicate glass plants probably produced in Innsbruck, and a bronze lizard, likely made in the circle of Wenzel Jamnitzer.

Origin: Southern Germany; imported coral from Genoa

Dimensions: Height 66 cm, Width 55 cm, Depth 56.2 cm

Materials: Wood, red precious coral (Corallium rubrum), pearls, mother-of-pearl, plaster, mirror glass, velvet, glass, bronze, lapis lazuli, gilding, and gold braid

Iconography: The cabinet depicts a mythological underwater scene, probably inspired by the Triumph of Galatea or Venus Marina, although later alterations make this uncertain

Alterations: Before 1788, figures of Christ, a centaur, and a child were added from other coral cabinets, altering the original mythological composition
