So I’ve been living with roommates who are both in relationships with males, and I’ve seen the same pattern repeat to them day after day; their boyfriends are not contacting them in a timely manner. Sometimes, they don’t show up or cut contact right when they’ve arranged to meet or hang out. And sometimes, it’s not even boyfriends, but just guys they’re interested in, and who they’ve met and are talking with, are not sending them messages in a timely manner, and they’re increasingly frustrated, anxious, annoyed, sad and upset about the lack of communication.

I had thought, at first, that it was just these particular guys who are treating them with this type of neglect, but they’ve changed boyfriends several times across the year and they’re running in that exact same issue, over and over, to the point where it now repeats every single day. Not a day goes on without one or both my roommates going ‘It’s been over 6 hours since he’s last contacted me.’, or ‘he said he was going to call, what is he doing?’, ‘He’s online but left me on seen’, or ‘we were supposed to meet, but then he ghosted and later said something that sounds made up as an excuse’.

I remember sometimes having feelings for a person, and then getting anxious or upset if this person doesn’t get back to me, but it was never something I lived through every single day. I actually believe this is a type of torture to put someone through. My roommates will eventually get so nervous, annoyed, frustrated and mad, they will start to take it out on me and be very disagreeable to any kind of conversation or companionship. They’ll yell in frustration and insinuate that their life is painful and sometimes even talk about how they wish they didn’t exist.

When they do get the communication, they’ll spring up in happiness, and immediately declare love and devotion, and be ready to go out at a moment’s notice. They say this is fine and how relationships go, but I’m feeling very uneasy about it; I don’t think relationships should be that painful. I’m now wondering if this is a common theme for women in straight relationships, if this is just what you have to accept when you’re dating males? If you’re a woman who’s been thru this type of thing, or are going through it now, please tell me how do you deal with it, how do you survive it, and if there’s anything that you did that changed this dynamics or made it better.

Ultimately, men don’t rape unless they’re certain they’re going to get away with it, it only looks like mindless and random impulse because our society is so structured to let men get away with it. Men rape more when they know women can’t escape or speak up or punish them, and less when they can. Areas, cultures and situations where men rape less or more than other situations are not because of an innate personality, temperament or cultural enlightenment, it is because of differing opportunities and repercussions, which are all caused by a large variety of factors. You can argue that the impulse to rape and take advantage of these opportunities and the desire to perpetuate societies and socialisation that supports rape is genetic, but men’s raping is not mindless acting on genes. Likewise, you can argue some societies are structured differently that allow for an environment of more or less rape but ultimately every culture exists by perpetuating the rape of women and take any man from any culture and give him an opportunity like war and he will behave the same way.

This is why discussion of socialisation and the structure of our societies is more important to preventing rape than comparing different cultures or genes.

Reminds me of some bits from Lundy Bancroft’s Why Does He Do That. He asks victims of abuse 2 questions that illuminate the same falsehood of no self control.

1) Does the abusive man blow up to his friends? His parents? Other family (outside of nuclear family)? His boss? People important for his career? If not, his anger is clearly controllable. He is not ruled by his impulses or feelings like he may claim to the abused woman.

2) When he flies into an abusive rage and destroys things, whose things does he destroy? His objects? The things he uses? Or does he destroy (almost exclusively) the woman’s things. This also demonstrates that when he APPEARS out of control, his anger/rage is controlled for his own interest.

Rapists do not rape indiscriminately, they rape when they feel that the conditions will protect them from consequences. They rape to harm women, put them in their place, and intimidate women as a class.

The narrative of men “out of control” and ruled by “impulse” is an attempt to hide the calculated cruelty of men, and of the prevalence of rape.

I really wonder about this especially because of how extremely common PCOS, endometriosis, and fibroids are. Like was such a large minority of women living with this pain in all of history, or does our current industrialised environment and pollution have unstudied effects on the female reproductive system increasing all these health problems?

I think it's both. I've heard stories about there being women in previous generations who were pretty much confined to their beds during their periods due to how painful they were; but, on the other hand, it seems like every other woman nowadays has some sort of dysmenorrhea (abnormally painful period symptoms). I myself am lucky to only have some annoying cramps in the first couple of days, I take about 1200-2000mg of ibuprofen per period in order to not feel the pain. I don't think I'd be debilitated without painkillers, but I'd be unable to do all of my daily activities as normal. Although I suppose women in the past had their own analgesic treatments, such as teas and hot water bottles.
