okay I saw @queer--trainwreck's really awesome comic HERE and immediately a brainworm hit me (thanks for that!)
Imagine a situation where Simon ended up on the Hail Mary (yay wormholes), as he does. But in this particular instance, Grace has no idea he even there. Like, the wormhole dumps Simon out into a room on the ship when Grace happens to be busy elsewhere, and for some reason the Hail Mary doesn't mention the whole-ass new person on board?? I mean, she's probably just as confused as Simon is, the poor girl. She's not programmed to deal with spontaneously appearing people, so she just. Doesn't. IDEK, work with me here.
But yeah, so Simon lands on the Hail Mary and he's freaking out, and may or may not be grievously injured, so naturally his first instinct is to hide. He has no idea where he is or how he got here, but it's somewhere strange and new and he doesn't want to be attacked while he's recovering. So he goes and finds a nice little hidey hole and chills there for a bit. At some point he realizes that someone else is on the ship, and he makes it his goddamn mission to never, ever be in the same place as that person at the same time so that they can't grab him and drag him back to the sub or his cell or some other hellish torture.
(It is theoretically possible for him to avoid Grace if you're looking at the movie's Hail Mary design. Or at least if we're following the concept art, which I will gladly do. There's like, a loop.)
Of course, if Rocky is on the ship, there's no way Simon would be able to hide. Thus this must take place either before Grace even makes it to Tau Ceti, or (much more fun) during the brief window where Grace and Rocky were separated before Grace went back for Rocky.
What would make this extra hilarious is that, once Rocky comes back onto the Hail Mary, he's gonna immediately know Simon is there. Rocky hears Simon's heartbeat, just freezes in confusion for a second, and then turns to Grace to demand where he got a whole new person from?? Did Grace create a new human through mitosis???
Grace is just like what other human??? There should be no other humans?????
Simon, meanwhile, has fallen asleep in whatever little nook he's been hiding in recently. Thus when Rocky rolls right up to him and pokes him awake, the first thing he sees is a rock spider hovering over him.
He screams. Grace screams. Rocky screams to feel included.
All in all, some wonderful chaos enfolds.
