Hi!! Thank you so much! This made me smile❤️ that’s a really good question I wish I had an answer to. Honestly, the only thing I can think of is to be open about your own queerness if/when/where you can; it gives others the opportunity to connect and be open too :)
HEY LGBTQ BALLET DANCERS (and anyone else)! If you are closeted or your parents or coworkers or teachers or friends etc aren’t accepting of the whole you, I am your gay ballet mom-friend now.
Need someone to send your first day of class pics to? I want em. Need help choosing dancewear that affirms your gender? Send me links. Need hair and makeup help? Someone to obnoxiously yell your name from the audience (metaphorically, but also if we’re in close proximity I will TOTALLY show up to your performances)? I’ve got you.
I love you for who you are. You shouldn’t have to dance from the closet. Shine bright, you rainbow star.
I just started pointe this year and it's making me insecure. My turnout has always been (or at least seemed) fine, but when I eleve in my pointe shoes, my feet turn in to the point where I have hardly any turnout. Also I have really knobby knees that prevent me from standing in first with my legs straight (my heels are like 3 or 4 inches apart in first). I'm willing to do the work it takes, but I just feel like my body wasn't built for ballet. Thoughts? ~a closeted dancer who loves your blog <3
Hi! I only have my own experience to work from, but here are a few things I’ve gathered along the way:
-thinking of turnout as a conscious action vs an inherent position really helps me to activate those micro muscles
-turnout and core stabilizing exercises!!!! And on that note, physical therapy, Pilates, and yoga are GREAT supplements to any dance regimen for strength, flexibility, injury prevention, and general well rounded-ness.
-as your self appointed gay ballet mom I have to say safety first— PLEASE do not try to force or manipulate your body into doing/being things that are not natural to you. My knees are knobby too (first and a half position forever!) and speaking from personal experience, the damage that comes with extreme stretching/exercise is NOT WORTH IT.
-don’t fret too much (I know it’s hard). Especially if you are new to pointe, it’ll take time and perseverance for things to “click”.
-remember your body is a great one!!!! if you have a body and do ballet, you have a ballet body :)

Hey I just wanted to say this is such a lovely page and it warms my heart!! Ballet has been a big part of my life since I was very young, and being gay has been something I’ve known and loved about myself for a few years now. When I was just starting to come into my identity I really wanted to someday partner with a girl and see gay dancers on stage, but I felt really isolated because it’s such a heterocentric art. But it doesn’t have to be!!! I love what you’re doing thank you so much 💞💕💞💕

It is never too late! I’m a big believer that dancing is for anyone who wants to. Maybe research beginner teen/adult classes in your area and take a few drop-ins, see how you like it? I’ve seen some follow-along ballet class recordings on YouTube as well — I’ve never watched any, but they might be worth checking out as well. Best of luck, and happy dancing!! 😊💖

My name is Em. I’m a professional ballet dancer, teacher, artist and soon-to-be college student, and I just happen to be queer as heck. It is my goal to create better LGBTQ+ representation in the ballet world, especially for queer fem and trans/nonbinary dancers.
Growing up queer, brown, mentally ill, and poor in the classical ballet world was isolating. Existing as a closeted queer individual in a full time company was exhausting. I felt like I had to hide huge, important pieces of myself and my life just to stay in good standing and have an equal shot at success.
How is that fair??
It’s not!
And if you have experienced or are currently experiencing similar things, I want you to know that it’s not fair to you, either. I want you to know that your WHOLE self deserves recognition and love. I want you to know that you are valid, seen, and appreciated. I want you to know that you are underrepresented, NOT alone.
That last bit one more time: You are NOT alone.
The ballet world needs you.
