I went on a class trip to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, where we saw an amazing exhibit of Yayoi Kusama’s work. It was with my Women, Art and Identity class, so we had learned about her work before visiting. The museum itself was beautiful too, it overlooks the sea – definitely worth the trip!
It’s been an emoional 24 hours here, and each time I find myself wanting to be with my families in California and New England, my heart pangs for the hundreds of people who couldn’t go home to their families last night, and especially the ones who never will. I’m so fortunate to have a community of Smithies in Paris who have made sure I haven’t felt alone or uninformed, and have even provided distractions between news cycles. I admire the strength of the people of Paris, and my thoughts will definitely not be far from them, even after I leave this amazing city.
On traveling solo
I’ve never traveled anywhere completely alone before — even a year ago, I don’t think my extroverted self could have handled it. As I traveled more and more this semester (I’m currently in country #13) and found myself growing more introverted, and valuing time with myself more, I began really looking forward to the chance to travel solo. Unlimited museum wandering time, no arguments about where and when to eat, no negotiations of schedules — a trip perfectly tailored to me. And then I arrived at the Budapest airport.
