Hey everyone! My name is Makumbu Lumbu and Iâm lesbian and disabled. I want to start an activism group, within the Toronto area, to raise awareness for people with disabilities and identify with the LGBTQ community. These communities are extremely marginalized and as someone who identify with both groups I know the stigma behind it. Iâm reaching out to you, if you want to know more information please message me or email me at: [email protected]. Thank you!
Packing as a wheelchair user
I was asked to write a post about how I pack as a wheelchair user! Itâs a little long so Iâm adding a cut here. There are no pictures or anything so itâs SFW, but links to packers are NSFW. Also some of the links use the term âFTMâ, so be aware of that before you click links if that makes you uncomfortable.Â
Please let me know how I can expand this to be more inclusive of different experiences! This is mostly based on my own experiences because I donât know many other trans wheelchair users who pack, so let me know how I can improve it!

Wasnât completely sure what to title this. I also considered posting the buzzfeed article thatâs posted in the AMA but itâs messy. So warnings for ableism, transphobia, and binarism. Thereâs likely other warnings that can go here (will edit to include later). Proceed with caution.

I saw this survey on Facebook and thought some people on here might be interested in participating.
Image description: The left shoulder of a dark blue T-shirt, a white-skinned half-visible bicep and fully visible forearm (belonging to a pansexual/queer trans man) shows a tattoo just below the inner elbow joint. The tattoo is black ink, a little over 2 inches long by 2 inches wide, the silhouette of the typical wheelchair user seen on a US handicap placard or bathroom sign, but in his hand is a saber pointing upward with the blade length to just above his head. Tattoo was done May 2014 in Cambridge, MA.]
I grew up in a really dis/ableist environment that never allowed me to accept or embrace that I have cerebral palsy (spastic diplegia, for those curious). So a significant chunk of my adulthood so far has been devoted to reclaiming this important aspect of my identity and unlearning the crap Iâve internalized, and a part of that required this tattoo.
I found it as a Livejournal icon several years ago and decided that it needed to be somewhere on my body. After about five years of sitting on the idea and working out the logistics, some very dear friends came together to give me the money to make it happen. So itâs a reminder of how amazing and wonderful my friends and community are, and also serves to remind myself and others that thereâs nothing wrong with being disabled. Iâve grown up seeing and hearing a lot of terrible things about disabilities, but I think the worst directed at me was a stranger referring to my CP/using forearm crutches as something he wouldnât want to wish on his worst enemy.
Since I havenât seen any posts about it on Tumblr, I figured Iâd make the post myself! #heardwhilstdisabled is a trending hashtag on twitter, has been on-and-off for awhile obviously, and itâs about the common, casual microagressions the disabled of all stripes have to deal with. Itâs UK- and AU-based primarily from the looks of it but I would think it applies to most disabled people - I certainly know Iâve heard my share of this kind of ableism. Hereâs more tweets (source is The Indepedant):

This one goes out to all the disabled trans folks who canât present the way they want
To the trans feminine folks who canât wear heels often or at all bc it hurts to walk for a long or any period of time, who donât have the spoons to shave everyday esp in hard to reach places
To the trans masculine folks who canât bind bc of the pain, who canât pack bc it interferes with a colostomy bag, who canât get the muscle mass you want to look more masculine bc exercise esp weight lifting exasperate symptoms
To all the trans folks who canât get surgery bc it will create complications, who canât take hormones for the same reasons, who canât wear inexpensive makeup to frame your face the way you want bc of allergies
You are trans enough. Your gender is valid. You are not a failure. You are kickass as hell and deserve validation and respect
