y/n was standing outside the nail salon, waiting for Rue and Fez to come pick her up so they could head to the New Year's party.
It was cold, the winter wind biting sharply through her thin clothes, and y/n looked like a prostitute right now.
Her outfit was entirely too skimpy for December, featuring a tiny skirt and a top that offered absolutely zero protection against the chill.
Her impatient ass decided to call Rue again, her fingers freezing as she aggressively tapped the screen.
The phone rang twice before Rue picked up with a huff.
"y/n I promise you we're like 2 minutes away." Rue's voice crackled through the receiver.
"Yeah, well, you said that when I last called you 6 minutes ago!" y/n huffed out and then hung up.
...
I finally saw that black Chevy pull up, and I hurriedly got in the backseat.
"The hell took y'all so long?" I said, buckling up next to Rue, who was looking at my outfit with a mixture of amusement and concern.
"Yo cousin got our asses in some bullshit, and a deal took longer than it was ‘posed to," Fez said, looking at me through the rearview mirror.
"Makes sense," I said, looking out the window. The streetlights were blurring as we drove past.
...
Hypnotize by Notorious B.I.G was loudly blasting as we got out of the car.
We all spread out to find our people. But Maddy found me before I could even register my surroundings. It looked as if she, Kat, and Jules had just pulled up.
"y/n!"
I turned in confusion. Then my face relaxed when I saw the three. Specifically Maddy. She still looked effortlessly gorgeous. Definitely a lot happier too. Must've broken up with Nate. Again.
Jules and Kat squealed, then ran up to me and hugged me tight. Hugging them back, I noticed Maddy waiting for her turn. My eyes were on Maddy the entire hug. Everything Kat and Jules had said went in one ear and out the other.
After my hug with those two, Maddy rushed up to me. Squeezing me. No one had really seen me over winter break. I spent 2 weeks up in Jersey with my mom. While Rue and I spent the rest of winter break bingeing shows and spending all our holiday money.
"We missed you bitchh!" Maddy said, peppering my face. I felt butterflies go damn near everywhere after each peck.
"Yeah, I-uhm missed you guys too. Jersey was something." I said, a slight blush on my face from Maddy kissing me.
"How's your mom?" Jules asked with that big grin on her face.
"She's definitely happier. She thought about moving me up there after this school year."
All of their faces dropped.
"Wait...What?!" Kat exclaimed.
"She complained she hardly got to see me and shit. Plus, of course, my dad was on board with it."
"Yeah, but your dad's like a dick, you hardly listen to him anyway." Jules scoffed.
y/n's dad was in the picture. But he was always working. Hardly spent time with her when he could. But when he did? He wasn't exactly sober. So he was more than happy to have y/n out of his hair for her last year of high school.
"Can't you just spend the summer with her?" Â Maddy asked with a frown.
All these "why don't you" and "can't you" questions came up. I just shrugged. Maddy huffed in annoyance.
"Well, let's just forget that and dance, or I might bust into tears," Jules suggested.
...
Maddy and I were currently hand in hand as she dragged me with her to find a bathroom.
"Bathroom?" She asked one guy, and he shook his head. She huffed and then dragged me into the kitchen.
"Bathroom?" She asked a girl who shrugged.
"Where's the bathroom?" She stood in the middle and asked loudly. I was busy waving to a few people I knew.
A couple of people pointed in its direction. "Thank you," she sighed and started pulling me down the hallway.
We were passing Lexi on the way to the bathroom.
"Either of you seen Cassie?"
"Nope," I said, looking behind me as if she would suddenly appear there.
"I thought she was with you?" Maddy said with one arched eyebrow and her eyes squinted in confusion.
"No, we got in a screaming fight, and she got out of the car in the middle of the road."
"Wait, what?"
The hell were you two fighting about?" I asked with a slight smile.
"She was drinking while I was driving."
"How long ago was this?" Maddy asked, genuinely concerned, but her leg was bouncing; anyone could tell how desperate she was to pee and be done with this.
...
y/n leaned against the wall opposite where Maddy was leaning, next to the bathroom door. Apparently, Nate was taking a shit, and it was taking too fucking long.
Some guy came up behind Maddy. y/n knew him. But she was hardly thinking.
"Sup y/n." He said with a smirk. Eyeing her outfit.
She nodded in return. Clearly forgetting his fucking name. Maddy turned around.
"Do I know you?" She gave him a once-over.
"A lot of people know me." He took a sip from his cup.
"Do you know me?"
"Yeah. You the girl I met on New Year's Eve. Standin' In line for the bathroom."
y/n chuckled. Maddy turned back around and glared at y/n. "Oh god," she muttered.
...
As I peed, y/n was in the corner opposite of me, near the bathtub. She leaned against the wall with her head bent down and buried her head into her tank top. Nate's shit smelled fucking disgusting and fishy, so I couldn't blame her.
"After this, did you wanna come over?" I asked, looking up at her.
"Sure. My dad probably isn't home anyway." She agreed. Voice muffled by her tank.
"Is he ever?" I laughed.
"No," y/n said and looked at her shoes. I stopped laughing, guess that really fucking bothered her ass.
I looked over to wipe. Of fucking course there was no toilet paper. I looked around and saw a rag. I groaned.
"y/n/nnn..."
"Hm?" she looked over at me. Nose still buried in her top.
"Pass me that rag," I said, disgusted.
"You're insane," her face scrunched up in disgust.
"I don't want a yeast infection."
She passed the rag and then turned away. facing the bathtub.
...
Back That Azz Up by Juvenile was now playing, and the entire party was just louder than ever. y/n and I were in the kitchen downing shots.
"Any New Year's resolutions?" y/n yelled to me over the loud music.
"No, you?" I said, scanning the room.
"Not really." She sat down, finishing her second shot.
"t'fuck do you mean not really? It's a yes or no question y/n/n." I looked back at her in confusion.
"Okay, no. I don't," She said, downing her third shot yet.
"After your fifth, you're cut off."
"says who?" She looked at me, about to down yet another shot.
"Me. I'm not dealing with you being hungover again. I'm gonna go dance." I said, then walked off.
...
After a while, y/n went outside and sat with Jules by the pool.
"You are actually gonna leave for senior year, are you?" Jules pouted. Besides Kat, y/n was one of the first people Jules met and was actually interested in.
"It's really up to my mom. She'll probably let me finish out high school here. Depends."
Jules huffed, leaning on y/n's shoulder.
"It sucks. I know." y/n laid her head on top of Jules'.
The two of them were probably closer than her and Maddy and Jules and I. They just understood each other and told each other everything. But y/n didn't tell Jules about her crush on Maddy. But Jules could just see it. Anyone could really. If they paid close enough attention.
"You should go for it." Jules suddenly broke the silence.
"For what?" y/n said, hand trying to find Jules'.
"For Maddy. Tell her tonight." Jules' hand met y/n's halfway. Squeezing it.
"Yeah, no," y/n said firmly.
"Or you could like...Be her New Year's kiss!" Jules lifted her head and then started squealing at her idea. Which was honestly pretty smart.
"But like what if she's around Nate?"
"Then just like I dunno grab her." Jules grabbed both y/n's forearms for emphasis.
"Jules, you're fucking insane." y/n laughed.
...
Ashtray was calling my phone while I was dancing with Jules.
"Yo, if you need a ride, start heading to the car now." Ash's voice broke through the receiver. Jules is still dancing around me.
"What, why?" I said, covering my other ear to listen better.
"Yo, do you need a fuckin ride or not y/n/n?" He snapped.
"No. I'm riding home with Maddy, but thanks, Ash. Happy New Year," I said, a little startled. For someone so small, he was so aggressive.
"No problem."
With that, I hung up the phone. Putting it in my back pocket and continuing to dance with Jules.
"Everyone! Everyone! One minute til' fuckin' New Year's!!" Somebody yelled, and the whole house started cheering. Couples are starting to find one another. People were grabbing drinks. Everything.
"I'm gonna go find Rue. Maddy is over there, and I swear y/n if you don't go over there--" She grabbed my shoulders and slightly shook.
"I'm gonna go over Jules, I promise you," I said with a smile.
"Okay, call me about it later. Love you." She said, hugging me tight before walking off to find Rue. I turned back to where we had seen Maddy.
My stomach had nervous butterflies going insane right now. Maddy spotted me across the room and walked over.
"Finally. Travis was getting on my fucking nerves, and I was literally searching high and low for your ass." She chuckled, holding onto her drink.
"Everyone! Thirty seconds!" a guy yelled from the top of the stairs, holding a bottle of champagne in the air. The crowd let out a collective, feral cheer.
My heart started hammering against my ribs so hard I was convinced Maddy could hear it. Jules's words were echoing in my head over and over again like a broken record: Be her New Year's kiss... just grab her.
"Hey," Maddy said, her voice dropping a register as she noticed the panicked look on my face. She stepped closer, closing the gaps between us until the scent of her expensive perfume and vanilla lip gloss completely enveloped me. "What’s wrong with you? You look like you’re about to faint." She grabbed my chin and tilted my head to the side.
"Ten!" the entire house screamed in unison. The countdown had officially begun.
I swallowed hard, looking at her perfectly lined lips, then back up to her eyes. "Maddy, I have to tell you something."
"Nine!"
"Okay, tell me," she said, leaning her ear closer to my mouth so she could hear me over the deafening noise.
"Eight!"
"I don't think I'm moving to Jersey next year," I blurted out, the adrenaline completely taking over my nervous system.
"Seven!"
Maddy pulled her head back, her perfectly arched eyebrows shooting up. "Oh, yeah? And why is that, y/n/n?"
"Six!"
"Because," I said, my voice shaking just a little bit. I reached down, my hands tentatively finding her waist. Her skin was warm under my fingers. "Because there's no way I'm leaving you."
"Five!"
Maddy froze for a fraction of a second, her eyes widening just a fraction as she registered what I was saying—and where my hands were. A slow, knowing smirk began to play at the corners of her lips. She didn't pull away. Instead, she stepped even closer, her own hands coming up to rest on my shoulders, her nails digging gently into my jacket.
"Four!" the crowd roared, the energy in the room reaching a boiling point.
"Is that so?" she teased, her eyes flashing with that sharp, confident look she always got when she knew exactly what effect she had on someone.
"Three!"
"Yeah," I breathed, my eyes dropping down to her lips again. The space between us felt completely electric, the music fading into the background. "It is."
"Two!"
Maddy tilted her chin up, a breathless smile breaking across her face. "Then do something about it."
"One!"
"HAPPY NEW YEAR!" Cheers erupted. I pulled Maddy in by her waist, crashing my lips against hers. The kiss was sudden, intense, and tasted like sweet vanilla gloss and alcohol. Maddy immediately melted into it, her fingers tangling into the back of my hair to pull me closer as the crowded house exploded into pure, loud chaos around us.
Suddenly, a violent crash echoed from the hallway, and people started screaming. Maddy pulled away, and we both looked over to see Nate getting his ass whooped by Fez. Maddy pulled away from me and rushed over. She and Cassie were trying to pull Fez off of Nate, but Fez kept going. Blood splattering on his shirt and the floor.
...
I sat back and watched as Nate was shuffled into the back of Maddy's car by Cassie, McKay, and the guy who threw the party. I climbed in the front while Cassie was with Nate in the back, and Maddy drove.
y/n wanted nothing more than to finish off what Fez had started and strangle the shit out of Nate. She'd just confessed her feelings, and now he was getting beaten. Which took Maddy's attention off of her and right back onto him.
...
After dropping off Nate at the hospital and Cassie at home. Maddy and y/n made it back safely to Maddy's place. The two were upstairs. Maddy sat on her bed, staring at the floor, and y/n washed her face in the bathroom.
I patted my face dry with a towel, staring at my reflection in the mirror. The adrenaline from the party was finally wearing off, replaced by a heavy, hollow ache in my chest. Just an hour ago, I was kissing Maddy Perez. Her hands were in my hair, her lips were on mine, and for a split second, I actually thought everything was changing.
Then Fez had to go and paint the hallway with Nate's blood.
I threw the towel on the rack and walked back into Maddy's bedroom. The air was thick and completely silent, a jarring contrast to the blaring music we’d been surrounded by all night. Maddy was still sitting on the edge of her mattress, her knees pulled slightly toward her chest, staring blankly at the carpet. Her hair was a little messy, her mascara slightly smudged from the panic at the house, and she looked smaller than usual.
I leaned against the doorframe, crossing my arms. "You okay?" I asked softly.
Maddy didn't look up right away. She just let out a sharp, ragged breath. "I don't even know," she whispered, her voice cracking just a bit. "It was just... so much blood, y/n/n. I've never seen Fez like that. And Nate... Jesus."
Hearing his name leave her lips felt like a slap to my face. I clenched my jaw, swallowing down the bitter taste of jealousy and frustration. Nate always did this. Even when he wasn't trying to, even when he was getting his face caved in by a drug dealer, he still managed to completely consume Maddy's entire universe. He managed to rip her away from me.
"He's gonna be fine," I said, trying to keep my voice flat, devoid of the annoyance I was actually feeling.
"I know," Maddy murmured. She finally looked up at me, her dark eyes wide and full of an overwhelming amount of confusion. She looked at my lips, and for a second, the heavy tension shifted back to what it had been right at midnight. "Everything just went completely insane tonight."
I took a slow step forward, sitting down on the bed next to her, but leaving enough space between us so she wouldn't feel crowded. "Yeah. It did."
Maddy looked at me, her expression softening as she registered the distance I was keeping. She reached out, her freshly manicured hand sliding over the comforter until her fingers brushed against my knee. "Hey," she said gently, her voice dropping to that quiet, intimate register she only used when it was just the two of us. "About what you said before the countdown... and the kiss..."
My heart did a familiar, painful flutter, but I braced myself. "Maddy, you don't have to say anything right now. Your mind is clearly somewhere else."
"No, look at me," she insisted, tugging lightly on my top until I turned my head to face her fully. Her eyes searched mine, intense and completely serious. "I meant what I said. I don't want you to go to Jersey. And that kiss... it wasn't just some midnight bullshit to me. Okay?"
I let out a breath I didn't realize I'd been holding, my eyes dropping to her hand on my knee. "Hard to believe when you spent the last two hours losing your mind over him."
Maddy winced slightly, but she didn't pull her hand away. Instead, she slid closer to me on the bed, her shoulder brushing against mine. "Nate is... It's complicated, y/n. You know how fucked up it is. Seeing him like that terrified me. But it doesn't change how I feel about you. It doesn't erase tonight."
She leaned her head against my shoulder, her warm breath hitting my neck, and sighed deeply. "Don't go to Jersey y/n/n."
I hesitated for a fraction of a second before wrapping my arm around her waist, pulling her close against my side.
"I'm not going to Jersey, Maddy," I said quietly, my chin resting against the top of her head. "But if I stay, I can't be your second option."
Maddy let out a tiny, breathless laugh, her fingers tightening around my hand. "You aren't. I promise."
