Two months ago when I was searching for a job, I decided that I should change careers. Or at least, go through a certification program to improve my job outlook. To that end, I took a well-paying 3rd shift lab tech job: I hate the schedule, but it’s laid back and I can take normal university classes. 

I finally got to talk to someone in the career I want to change to. He seems to really like his job, it pays quite well, so it seems like a good option for me. But he did confirm one of my fears: I’m going to have to quit my full time job once the year long certification begins. 

I’m not excited for it. And it will be rough. But in the end, I might have a career instead of just a job. We’ll see how I feel in three years.

things you need to hear this exam season

- don’t beat yourself up for struggling even if you’re doing your best - you are smart and capable so don’t let laziness stop you from achieving your potential - stop self sabotaging. that tv show can wait. take a break but don’t become your own obstacle to success. get shit done first - eating right, staying hydrated and sleeping well are non-negotiable. look after yourself - grades do not define you so be kind to yourself. but do your best and work hard for what you want

Tip for Sourcing

If you wind up not having enough sources for your paper, just consider:

“Is this something that would spark a discussion?”

It’s not particularly about if what you are writing is your own opinion, or something you knew before. But rather, if someone (make it someone important. Your professor, or someone smarter than you), if someone could say, I don’t believe this assumption, well, then you just find a source that agrees with you. And maybe another source. Depends on the assumption and the topic and the course. But you find sources that agree with what you want to say. A largely unsourced paper will not be taken seriously, because it’s just you. That’s what sources are for. 

And then you have the opposite problem where I wrote a 4 page paper with 13 sources. WHoops.

Also, I finished my first exam. I wrote 3000 words for it and I honestly have no idea if it’s any good. My professor is very demanding, very tough, but she’s good. I guess I just worry about living up to her high expectations.

My week was pretty chaotic, but it’s finally the weekend and I can reorganize myself and de-stress. I’ve got to do some housework (laundry, dishes, life things) and I wanted to do something for my husband since he’s been taking care of everything while I’ve been freaking out working hard. 

My first exam is due next Tuesday, so I’m going to start on that today. I also have an article to read and discuss with my group. Later this evening I’m going to take my parent’s dogs for a walk; with the chaos, I haven’t been exercising and I think a nice long walk will be good for all of us.

It was a scathing commentary of the life he lived every day, about the boring, pointless repetition of his day to day working life. So seriously, just write what you want to write. People will find the deeper meanings later, and you get to have as much fun as you want writing it.

Just a reminder, but you do not need to “earn” being tired.

You’re allowed to be tired, even if you haven’t “done” anything and you’re allowed to be tired even if you did less than someone else.

Being tired is a normal thing your body does for a whole plethora of reasons, and is a basic bodily function. You don’t need to “earn” basic bodily functions, no matter what anyone else tells you.
