Philip rolled his eyes, but not out of sarcasm.  “Because when it’s going right, it’s so good,” was all he could say as supportive reasoning.  All told, though, that had been for two fairly narrow periods of his young life, and he wasn’t sure he had the emotional reserves to do it again.  Not yet. 

He sighed.  “I think maybe a non-adult beverage for now would be best.”

Rian exhaled as he nodded, knowing Philip was right.  “It’s getting it to stay right that I seem to have trouble with,” he acknowledged.  He had felt what it was like when things went right, but considering how wrong they became, and how much it hurt when they did, he wasn’t sure he was ready to go through all of that again.  “What’ll it be?  My treat.”

“Yeah, maybe.  And then maybe she’ll have an early mid-life crisis or something and it won’t be in your control.”  Philip sighed and shot his brother a sideways glance.  “All I’m saying is not one of us has any control.  Either you will or you won’t, it’ll be the right or the wrong time – it’s whatever.  You can only sort of hope to control so much.” 

He shook his head.  “I’m happy to be the exception.  And once you try it, you’re never gonna go back.”  This was punctuated with a sigh before he rendered something that sounded like an actual answer.  “I haven’t decided yet.  Even a good one might’ve scared me off.”

“That involves way too many variables for me to ever feel comfortable.  Why enter into something that could go wrong in so many different ways?” he asked, shaking his head in disbelief.  Of course, he knew the answer: because love was worth the struggles that came with it.  He truly believed that, even if he was started to lose hope that true love was something he would ever actually find.  “We’ll see about that,” he remarked jovially before chuckling at his brother’s reply.  “Probably for the best.”

“That doesn’t really answer the question though, does it?” She gave him a sly smile. His work let him help people and he felt that it was valuable, but that didn’t mean he enjoyed it.

“There are difficulties like any other job, but feeling like I am providing such an important service leaves me with a sense of satisfaction and purpose that I am not sure I would get anywhere else.  So yes, I would say that I do enjoy my job,” he nodded.

Snow ducked her head, hiding the smile that spilled unabashed onto her face because of his compliments and his passion.  She knew she was blushing, maybe even retaining a pink hue when she looked back up at him.  “That isn’t what this town needs, though.  I aimed for a revolution back home because those extremes were necessary.  Here… I’m finding a lot of fulfillment by making a difference on a one-on-one basis.  Things are different, and I mean that in a good way.  It leaves time and safety for a life beyond that work, if I want one.  I’m just trying to figure out what that might include, because I never had the chance before.” 

Her eyes drank him in, just listening intently as he talked through an overview of his doubts.  Maybe.  She wasn’t entirely sure they were doubts, exactly, but his words did seem to lack the optimism he had, just moments before, exuded about her.  “Understanding your own feelings and why you’re having them is hard.  I’m not sure I’ve liked having time to do that for myself.  But if anyone can figure it all out, it’s you.  And any person would be so lucky to have you as their partner.  I’m sure it’ll all come together with the right person and the right time.” 

If Rian was another man, he could have been showering Snow in compliments for some sort of ulterior motive.  Because he was who he was, his compliments came from a genuine place in his heart, and all he hoped to gain was Snow’s confidence in herself.  The sight of the blush that refused to budge from her fair features was just a nice bonus.  “It sounds like you found something to be really passionate about.  If I cannot support you in reclaiming your throne any longer, I can certainly support you in this,” he decided, grinning over at her.  “And I have no doubt you will find way to fill your free time.  There are so many different opportunities for hobbies in this world.”

“It is hard, but I’m working on it.  If I cannot understand my own emotions, how am I to understand someone else’s, right?” he mused.  He figured, if he worked through his own problems and became a little more stable emotionally, he would be open to a healthy relationship when the right person came along.  “I appreciate your confidence, even if I may not share it,” he replied.  “I certainly hope you’ll tell me if you begin dating anyone.  I want to make sure anyone that has the privilege of courting you knows how valuable you are and what sort of repercussions there would be if they were to hurt you.”

Elsa blinked at him as his words strung together, feeling a sense of relief at first that quickly shifted into some small kind of horror when he finished. She shook her head at him, reaching over to curl her fingers around his arm. “Rian, it isn’t that… It isn’t that how I feel has changed. I enjoy having you in my life, but I don’t know that I’m ready for any level of more right now, not really with anyone.” It was likely one of the longest, most confident set of sentences she had formed in a very long time. “I would love to have you as my friend, as long as you really are okay with… dialing back, just a little.”

He was surprised when she reached for his arm, his eyes meeting hers as he listened to her.  “No, no, I understand,” he assured her, placing his hand over hers on his arm.  “I just meant that I don’t want to push you into something you’re not ready for just because it’s what I want.  I was selfish before and didn’t take your feelings into consideration before I acted.  I’m not going to make the same mistake again,” he promised.  “If dialing back is what you want, then that’s what we’ll do,” he added, offering a small smile.  “Now...  Pizza or Tiana’s?”

Tish didn’t think someone could be in politics–or life, truly–without making some enemies, but that wasn’t something she cared to meddle in most of the time. She didn’t have anything against Mr. Clean-Cut Councilman. “I can imagine.” She arched a brow. He had former royalty written all over him. Fableton was lousy with it. “I do. Do you?”

He was glad to hear she enjoyed her work, and he nodded his answer before elaborating, “I have the ability to help the people of this town.  I couldn’t ask for a better use for my time.”
