All right, now this was getting somewhere.

Absolem leaned forward where he sat, resting his elbows on his knees as he waited for the girl to go on.

“Describe it to me, then.”

Quinn thought for a moment as she tried to figure out the best way to describe them. “It’s like an oval shape, with lots of petals the ends are pointed and on some of the petals, there are some small yellow petals growing out. At least that is the best way I can describe them if I’m honest. “

It wasn’t often that Laurie ventured too far from home, but occasionally she wanted to make sure that other areas were doing alright as well. It also helped keep her from wallowing too much if she allowed herself a distraction. The voice made her tip her head in curiosity, “Something in where about what?”

“In this book, it’s about plants. I’m trying to identify one. However, without a name or knowledge of a name, it’s proving difficult.”

Absolem listened well, but he still couldn’t tell what specific thing the girl actually needed help with. He liked to think of himself as a compassionate person on occasion, but moments like this tested him. He felt sympathy for the girl’s loss of her mother, sure, but a lot of Wonderland lost people recently and he had things he needed to do today.

“Child, I did not ask for your life story, just what you need help with.”

“Sorry,” she said faintly. “I just need to find a type of plant. See if the care I’m giving it is correct. I just can’t remember the name, only what it looks like.”

Jensen was pretty much just spending time while doing nothing, so he happened to just walk around without any specific destination. He was just walking past a woman who was reading some book, but he didn’t really pay much attention to her – it felt like now that there was a library in the town people were reading a lot more and that made Jensen feel happy. But he stopped in his steps when he heard her words. Jensen looked at the blonde and took a step closer – maybe it was his days as the king or something because his need to help made a return. “What are you looking for?”

Quinn looked up, closing the book as she did so. She let out a bit of a sigh feeling frustrated with her current situation. “If I’m totally honest. I’m not even sure myself. I have some plants, ones my mother plants and now they’re in season but the trouble is I can’t remember what they where called and I’m not sure if they’re looking right. Does that make sense?”

“I was hoping to could find them in a book, and get the name and more information.”

Erik spent majority of his time in the palace and it didn’t seem like he would ever leave, especially now with the whole business with the Mer and the sickness. He was worried, obsessed even, with the idea of it. But so far he only discovered that if you got sick, you were unable to shift…which was perfectly fine with him. Erik wasn’t much of a risk-taker but he could only take staying in the stuffy palace for too long before he found himself wanting to wander. Today he found himself entering a restaurant. It didn’t seem to be that busy as it was still early in the day. He had stood at the doorway for a long while before someone walked by.

“Excuse me? Are you guys open?”

As always Quinn has arrived to work thirty minutes before opening, that way she was able to get everything ready before customers started to arrive. She had just finished dressing the tables when a voice caught her attention. 

Looking over to the door she noticed a man standing this, asking if they were open yet. The technical answer would have been no, but it wasn’t as if he was far from the opening time. “Right this second no” She smiled politely, “but we will be in about five to ten minutes so if you want to take a seat then you’re more than welcome too. I just have to finish setting up a little that's all.”

She grabbed a menu and handed it to him “Please, sit where ever you want, have a browse and once the kitchen is open I’ll be over to take your order”

Well, he wasn’t sure what he could do to help her with that. Unfortunately he wasn’t in the business of bringing people back from the dead. He may lead a controversial life, but he had his moral boundaries and that was never something he would attempt to take part in.

“What are you trying to make sense of? Perhaps I can help. I’m quite the gardener myself…” 

Asking for help or even seeking it from others was something Quinn was slowly getting used to, at first she didn’t like doing it. However, situations like this left her no choice. 

She looked thankfully at the man, hoping that he would somehow have some way of saving her precious garden. “My mother grew plants, all year round. No matter the weather she’d have something, some even last months on end. She passed away not long ago since then everything just looks like it’s slowly dying. I’ve done what she has taught me, but it was just the basics.”

Absolem hadn’t planned to nose into anyone’s business on his walk through the Woodland. In fact, he had purposely avoided looking directly at anyone to try to maintain the peace of himself and the autumn breeze. It was the book that caught his eye, not the girl. He had studied it himself once, and he supposed he held a bit of fondness for anyone willing to put in the effort to take care of the land they live in. Since she looked to be struggling, he figured he’d take a few minutes out of his day.

“Something troubling you?”

She had never felt so useless, everything she had learnt so far had come from her mother but since her death, t was like she had completely forgot everything. that she had told her. 

“I’m okay... just new to this hole plants in winter thing. My mother used to deal with it.” she sighed, closing the book. “Its as if I can read the words but none of it makes sense.”

Quinn sat on the bench, she was deep in thought. A book on how to care for plants sat on her lap. It would be her first winter without her mother, and she had always been the one to keep their garden in top condition and care for the plants over the winter months. Even before, it took her life she always made sure she and Quinn had enough to keep them going. Something the girl had been struggling with recently. 

“Come on. There’s got to be something in here” she said out loud.

Pierce was never known to be the most sensitive person out there, so when she said apologetically that she should have been paying more attention, he just shrugged in agreement. 

Since she was no longer in danger of hurting herself or his progress, Pierce knelt down and began carefully cutting the damaged pieces.

When he heard her introduce herself, he looked up with a slight furrow in his brow, since he hadn’t really asked for her name… “Ookay… I’m Pierce, I guess,” he replied, immediately looking back down at his work.

 She couldn’t help but notice to annoyance or what looked to be annoyance within the man's voice. Great, can I piss any more people off today she thought to herself. 

“Sorry, once again,” she said. Taking a careful step backwards she made sure she was well out of his way. Quinn didn’t know what to say, clearly she wasn’t having the best of days. She had to get her mind focused again, forget what she had recently discovered.

Thea rolled her eyes slightly, Obviously, she thought but didn’t speak aloud. She squeezed past the girl and was about to be on her way but stopped and turned back to her for a moment, “Word of advice, from one spacey blonde to another, out here in the open isn’t a good place to lose focus of your surroundings. Not anymore, anyway. Keep your guard up. With this war going on and all the mer out there, paying attention is one thing you can’t let up on.” She wasn’t saying this to be rude or to try and scare her - well, maybe a little bit - but part of her was actually concerned about not only this girl’s safety, but everyone’s safety.

Quinn looked at the girl as she spoke. She wasn’t really sure how to take her advice. “Thanks,” she said quietly. With her mum's death and finding the journals” Quinn hadn’t really been focusing on anything else that was going on around her. 

“Perhaps you’re right. I’ve been too unfocused lately. Truth be told I couldn’t even tell you what has been going on. Sorry. Ignore me. I know you’re in a rush.”

Getting stuck behind someone slow on a narrow path when you’re already running late is never an ideal situation. Thea was in a hurry to get to work, while she did work for her father and probably wouldn’t face very harsh consequences for being late, she didn’t like wasting peoples’ time… Actually that wasn’t true in the slightest she loved wasting peoples’ time, but only recreationally, when things were professional she didn’t like to waste time… Actually that wasn’t true either.

Either way, she was running late to work, and the girl walking at a snail’s pace in front of her wasn’t making the situation any better. When the blonde girl came to a full blown stop Thea almost groaned in frustration. She waited a few moments to see if she would continue walking before finally saying, “Either keep moving or get off the trail,” she complained. Not the nicest way she could’ve put it, but she was rather irritable that morning. When the girl finally responded and Thea realized she didn’t even hear her she rolled her eyes, “I asked if you were gonna keep going or not? I got places to be,” she answered, trying to seem a bit more pleasant than her first statement.

Her distractions had become a way of life for the past couple days. She had grieved for her mother, through the help of her old diaries. Though she never expected the bombshell of finding out who her father way. So many questions ran through her head, did he know? Was he aware that he daughter walked the same streets as him? Either way, Quinn had to get the thoughts out of her head, at least for now anyway. 

She hadn’t realised how narrow the path she had been following was, not until someone's voice monitored for her to move. Quinn hasn’t heard what the girl had said first off. She looked around, finally connecting with her surroundings once again. “Shit, Sorry,” she said, noting how little the walkway actually was. “My bad, I wasn’t paying any attention.”

Em’s first reaction, really, was to shake his head, to disagree, to comply only with the second part of her statement.  He felt disconnected and out of place, but he could remember a time when he hadn’t, necessarily.  A time at home, a time with his gregarious (or, rather, more gregarious than him) loved ones.  He called upon that to smile, to fall into step with her, to agree.  “That is welcome news.  You don’t mind me joining you?” 

“Not at all” she shrugged “It really isn’t that far away and if I did just let you, I’d more than likely spend the rest of the day wondering if you made it or not” she let out a light laugh. Slowly Quinn started to make her way in the direction of the library. They would arrive within ten minutes and despite not really knowing the man, it felt nice to have some form of company even if it did mean the odd patch of awkward silences.

Oh for Crimson's sake she was going to have to have a real actual conversation with someone. This is what she got for checking on people. She’d wanted to help people before coming to Wonderland, but she’d become a bit of a lone wolf since then. Was she supposed to sit down with her, was that how it was supposed to work? What was she supposed to say? Was this one of those situations where you lie to make someone feel better?

“Wonderlands gone to shit,” Iris settled on, with a shrug. She never was very good at making people feel better. “With everything happening these days. It’s hard to understand anything anymore. But to be perfectly honest I don’t think it’s all that crazy, just the way things are now, you know? I’ve just been trying to figure out a way to deal with it.” She didn’t intend for any of this to be rude, it was just what she felt was true. Either you coped in any way you could or you fell behind the times. 

Even though Quinn wouldn’t exactly say it in the context that Iris had, she had to agree with the girl. Wonderland really had gone to shit lately and she had no doubt that many, just like her, didn’t know how to deal with it. “Yeah, I suppose you’re right” she agreed. 

“Though it seems some are handling it better than others. Perhaps they understand it all a bit more, for me, it’s all crazy. This war is just...” she paused unable to finish her sentence, in reality, there was no way she could describe what was going on around her.  For now, it was just something they were all having to simply deal with.

Pierce was in the middle of replacing a faulty wire in the ground, unraveling the new wire when he noticed someone had stopped near where part of the wire was dug up. He called out for her to be careful if she were to step on it, but she seemed in a haze and he wasn’t sure she heard.

With a short sigh and a roll of his eyes, he rose to his feet and walked over to the girl. Only then, when she seemed to notice him, he told her again, gesturing to his work, “Be careful where you step. The wiring here is pulled up while I replace it.”

Quinn looked to the floor her eyes instantly seeing the wires the man was talking about. She stepped back, a shy smile forming on her face. “Sorry, I should have been paying more attention” she apologised, hoping she hadn’t caused him any extra work or got in his way anyhow. It wasn’t until that moment that she realised how distracted she really had been lately. She had to get herself focused again before those around her started asking too many questions. 

“I’m Quinn, also known as the girl who can’t see dug up wires” she introduced herself, hoping to make light of her awkward situation.

Iris always got nervous when illnesses, like the one infecting shifters now, drifted through Wonderland. She hadn’t forgotten the one that stole her mother after the freeze. It put her on edge and even though she knew she was safe, it didn’t make her feel all that much better. From reliving the last few days with her mother, to losing Tristian, and trying to find a place in the guard it all added to the fear spreading throughout Wonderland.  She wasn’t really sure how to offer someone comfort in the midst of it all and she really sucked at making people feel better just in general, but she could try. 

She offered an empathetic smile, “I think we’ve all felt a little nervous lately, with everything going on around here.” 

It was clear, amongst everything how much the big freeze had affected people, it wasn’t just Quinn that had lost loved ones to the cold and now with everything else going on, she just couldn’t help but think would Wonderland ever feel the same to her again.

Quinn took a seat on the near by bench, looking back over to the girl she finally responded “Perhaps you’re right, I think everyone has felt a little off lately. It’s crazy you know? Trying to piece everything together to work out why, but coming up with nothing. I often feel like I don’t even know what is going on anymore because there is no way of understanding it”

Iris was off duty today and was thoroughly enjoying her time outside of the barracks. She liked having people around again, it almost reminded her of the tribe back home, but she still felt out of place. She wasn’t sure she’d ever get to escape Tristian’s shadow. 

She wanted to, she wanted to be the knight that Fianna and Odin seemed to think she could be. She’d changed her name, casting off the one she and her brother had chosen together and was considering going to the king with what she knew about Geneva and Tristian. They’d left her, so why should she give a damn about either of them. She might still harbor bad blood for Gideon, but she’d learned to put personal opinion to the side during her time as a mercenary. He was her employer now, kind of, and the salary was more important to her than the past. 

And being a knight gave her the opportunity to do what she’d wanted to before leaving the tribe- she was getting to help people. Supposedly on and off duty today, “Just asked if you were okay,” she repeated, “You’re just looking a little… out of it.” 

“Yeah sorry, slightly distracted but I’m fine,” she replied, pushing a stray piece of hair behind her ear. 

It wasn’t like Quinn the be so distracted, at least not to the point where people who realise at least anyway. “Must be something in the air, I’ve been a bit under the weather the past couple days, I’m fine now though. Just a bit more tired than normal” she explained, trying to come up with some lame ass excuse. 

It wasn’t just the news of Noah that Quinn was distracted by, it was everything around her. Her mind and heart had been taken over so much by the death of her mother that she still hadn’t really processed or understood what had been going on in the world around her. She almost felt out of it, lost, as if she had been away for months and had only just returned.
