Haley Swartz took her first steps toward Undergraduate Commencement this week as she ordered her cap and gown. Haley, who realized she was destined to become a Bobcat the moment she first visited our Mount Carmel Campus, is filled with an entrepreneurial spirit. From the time she could first form sentences, she was trying to make the world a better – and sweeter -- place. She still smiles when she thinks about the small candy nook tucked beneath her steps at home in which she stored the loot she sold to neighborhood children as they got off the bus. Through the guidance of Quinnipiac professors, she realized her passion wasn't for behavioral neuroscience, her first major, but rather entrepreneurship. "As soon as I switched my major, I felt a sense of comfort," she recalls. Haley helped a 5 year old with cerebral palsy celebrate Halloween. Using insulation, cardboard, felts and a few dozen lights, Haley and two of her friends spent more than 60 hours last semester during the heart of her field hockey season and semester transforming Kendall Pallone's wheelchair into a carriage worthy of a princess and then coordinated more than 300 students for a trick-or-treat sunset event on our quad. "I will never forget seeing Kendall's glowing face as we showed her the costume for the first time," she said. "Quinnipiac has allowed me to experience the world through the immersion of experiences, and I can't imagine what my life will be like after graduation." The upbeat soon-to-be-graduate from outside Philadelphia has served as a captain of our conference-winning, Big East-bound field hockey team, has led several high-profile student-run University events and traveled to Nicaragua to evaluate and award micro-loans to entrepreneurs. "When I committed to Quinnipiac, I wanted to make a name for myself," she said. "I was determined to be a Bobcat and leave a legacy here." It's pretty clear that when she walks across the stage at Commencement, she will be leaving the University a better place, and is already well down the path of changing the world for the better. After losing his dad to a heart attack, Bobby Palmieri knew he wanted to make a difference. Just weeks after his loss, Bobby, who was only 10 at the time, raised more than $2,000 for the American Heart Association through the sale of red “have a heart” bracelets. But that was just the beginning. Bobby, now a junior entrepreneurship student, yearned to provide scholarships to students who have lost a parent to heart disease. To realize his dream, he founded the Have a Heart nonprofit organization. Through his foundation, he hosts events to educate others on heart health. Bobby has raised $16,000 in the last year through merchandise sales as well as donations. His nonprofit organization will award the first scholarship this fall. Dare to have a heart. Daniel Menard’s heart shattered as he thought about the children slowly dying from lead poisoning in Flint, Michigan. He knew he had to do something when the face of a once bubbly 2-year-old girl who was sickened with the toxic substance flashed across his TV. After working with kids for the past five summers, Daniel motivated his fellow Quinnipiac NAACP members to raise money to supply the community with clean drinking water.  The finance major is using the popularity of Valentine’s Day to raffle gift baskets to raise money for the residents of Flint. “It’s the little things that motivate me,” he said in between selling tickets. “It’s emotionally crippling to see that others don’t have the right to even bathe in clean water.” Stop by the Carl Hansen Student Center before 3 today to help Daniel make a difference. #QuToday #BobcatNation

Our women’s basketball team will stand shoulder to shoulder against a vile adversary this afternoon in our TD Bank Sports Center. Although the women hope to extend their 12-game winning streak as they take on Marist College on the court, their hearts and minds will focused on a very personal opponent that can strike anywhere. The team will celebrate its Play4Kay game in grand fashion at 5 p.m. in honor of our associate athletic director for academic services. “The #Play4Kay game is our time to stand front and center and fight against breast cancer,” Head Women’s Basketball Coach Tricia Fabbri said. “Kay Yow was a pioneer for women – not only playing basketball, but coaching basketball. What makes this evening's event even more special is that we will honor one of our very own, Lyneene Richardson, who personally inspired me in her own battle against breast cancer which she successfully defeated! The sensation of whizzing down a mountain is something many of us take for granted, but without the help of several Quinnipiac students and faculty, it would be limited to the imagination of kids with disabilities. Nicole Napolitano, a health sciences major, left, and Christina Ast, a physical therapy major, right, wanted to ensure kids like Ian Coyne, center, could feel the wind in their hair while navigating down the slopes. “Skiing alongside the kids down the mountain and observing their happiness through their smiles and cheer is something I would not trade for the world,” Nicole said. Twenty-five students, faculty and alumni volunteered this winter to teach 20 children with disabilities learn how to ski throughout a seven-week program through the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center called Skiers Unlimited. “It’s great for our students to see the kids in a holistic manner and just having fun like the others,” said Occupational Therapy Professor Martha Sanders. “It’s really one of the goals of therapy that we rarely get to see.” Our involvement has become a beloved University tradition spanning nearly two decades. Our No. 1-ranked men's ice hockey team's abilities have been recognized across the pond. The team, hot off of a 6-3 victory over ECAC rival Colgate, has been invited to compete in the Friendship Four Tournament in Belfast, Ireland Nov. 25-26. "This is another great opportunity for Quinnipiac University, our program and for college hockey," head coach Rand Pecknold said. "Our President, John Lahey has made incredible strides in expanding Quinnipiac's reach in Ireland and also bringing Irish culture to Hamden with Ireland's Great Hunger Museum." When not on the ice, the Bobcats will take part in cultural experiences, including visiting with youth groups and exploring the deep history of Northern Ireland.
