aweee??! PLS SUPPORT THIS IS ADORABLE
you can totally interpret haikyuu as being about oikawa if you want to. and from the right angle, the story is just as beautiful with him as the protagonist.
i mean we start off with a young ambitious kid who was inspired by watching the argentina national team setter. he acquires a rival he can’t seem to beat and then a new young teammate who threatens his place on the team with the force of raw talent
he works so much throughout all of high school, aware he’s not a “genius” but determined to use the skills he’s trained so hard to fine tune. despite all his best efforts, he can’t beat either of his rivals to make it to nationals.
but, he still doesn’t give up. instead he heads overseas immediately, pushes himself even further and learns even more, and has his love for volleyball reawakened by yet another old rival. finally, years later, he gets to face everyone he couldn’t beat in high school on the olympic stage, fully confident he can win.
and he’s already won. despite what they said and despite all the hardships, he made it there by the sheer power of... “worthless pride”? determination? spite? being the most badass sports anime boy around? he did it and, as haikyuu always teaches us, that’s what matters more than winning actual games. finding your passions and working toward your own goals. he sought those goals and got to the stage he dreamed of, fully capable of taking on his strongest opponents.
but furudate said “nah, this guy isn’t the protagonist. he’s the main team’s first rival on the scene. the first big roadblock they have to overcome. he’s loved by the fandom and he’s going to miss ever going to nationals, but then he’s coming back as the final boss to face off against literally all the other strongest players” and I think that’s fucking perfect
