    “ don’t be mean, ” tommy says, crinkling his nose at the offense.  he holds out the bag of popcorn for her to take some.  “ i just happen to burn a metric shitton of calories, antgirl.  i’ve gotta make up for it somehow. ”  and what else is he gonna eat ??  a protein bar ??  fuck that noise.

   “ if one of them doesn’t have an actual magnet on it then i don’t see the point. if you can’t go big, you have to go home. ” leaning over the couch arm, kate gently digs around in the trunk, careful to not pick apart too much. “ wonder if you’re the only one who got something like this. ” she heaves a sigh, “ god, why is it always magic ?? i miss the good ol’ days of robot invasions. that was fun, right ?? ”

   “ robot invasions ?? ”  tommy fakes a sound of deep outrage.  “ watch it, that’s my fake-dad you’re talking about.  pretty sure, technically, i’m part robot. ”  he’s not, thank god, but he loves the attention.  “ magic’s a bitch, though.  don’t tell billy. ”

   “ no kidding. ” she’s only seen maybe two pieces, but she can put the pieces together quick enough. “ i respect a guy that knows exactly what his closet is gonna look like. ” plus you don’t have to spend hours figuring out what matches what and that alone would save bette a load of time when it comes to her parent’s galas. “ guess it wasn’t something that stuck with your generation, huh ? ”

“ nah, we kinda ditched the color motif. ”  tommy’s partial to green himself, but his hair isn’t green, at least.  hear that, aunt lorna ??  he stifles a yawn behind his hand and blinks quickly.  “ yeah, he was -- is a dedicated guy. ”

            ‘ oh – we could make it fly.’    she pronounces confidently / her hands wresting on her hips, lips pulled up smugly.      ‘ i may not have my dad’s lab anymore, but i know my way around giving things unnecessary and complicated functions.’       on a pad of paper, she starts scrawling away, where she got it from she won’t tell. but part of a woman’s charm is having an infinite amount of storage in a micro-universe.          ‘   but uhh– do you think you could .. describe his helmet?       my memory’s kind of … lacking. ‘ 

   tommy zips up behind her to peer over her shoulder at the sketchpad.  even with perception beyond normal in so many ways, tommy hadn’t seen the source of the pad of paper, but that’s not worth worrying about right now.  instead, he tries to bring to mind the helmet in question.  “ it’s kinda purple ??  it’s a big ugly dome with a cutout around the face.  he says it keeps people from reading his mind, but i think that was an accidental, addd bonus.  mostly he just loves looking dramatic. ”  a trait he passed on to MOST of his offspring.  he thinks of wanda’s headdress, of billy’s tattered cape, and he sighs tiredly.

    “ hey, short stack -- ” tommy holds up his fist for her to tap, gets impatient near-immediately, and bumps it against her shoulder instead.  the ever-important greeting handled, tommy can go back to shoving fistfuls of cheesy popcorn into his mouth.  “ you’re lookin’ kinda cranky, are you cranky ?? ” he asks, mindful not to spew crumbs everywhere.

               ‘     oh – i mean I  don’t know. but    probably ???    ‘    nadia offered / her shrug almost hopeless.    she didn’t LIKE not knowing answers to questions, but she’s gotten more used to it.     ‘  no scientist ever gets thing right the FIRST time.       ‘sides,       you can always try making one ?      it’s like  -  -   probably not even that hard ! and you can make it look cooler,    like a  .… helmet 2.0 ? oh ! you could add wings !! ‘ 

   “ wings, huh ?? ” tommy asks, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning back in his seat.  “ i mean, as cool as that sounds, then people are gonna think i can fly, and i definitely can’t do that. ”  he’s like the one third of the family that can’t fly.  billy got all the luck, apparently.  “ you think you could make a magneto inspired helmet ?? ”

Though it was certainly not common, Kara wasn’t new to the concept of a multiverse, nor was she a stranger to new faces suddenly arriving at their doorsteps, having been around heroes and villains enough to become quite familiar with the most unusual situations and people. She had ideas on how to handle it, had been taught plenty of protocols and contingency plans while she worked with the Justice League, knowing she had to remain alert while still maintaining an open demeanor to encourage the newcomers to trust her and facilitate the process of extracting information. However, Kara also knew what it was like to be the newcomer, to be thrown into a world she didn’t know or understood, to have people question her and only pretend to be close to find out more about her. She knew what it was like to be treated like a threat, and though she understood why it was necessary, it wasn’t a cycle the blonde wanted to continue. Kara was on her way out of the Hall of Justice when she spotted an unfamiliar face, approaching him in the hopes of helping him feel welcome, her objective interrupted when he started talking. “Who’s Magneto?”

   who’s magneto -- huh, that’s not a question tommy’s ever been asked.  usually people wonder who the hell he is.  where he’s from, magneto is some sort of legend.  he’s the face of probably the most important revolution in tommy’s lifetime.  he clears his throat, wonders just how much he wants to reveal.  “ uh -- technically my grandfather.  sort of. ”  he drums his fingers anxiously against his leg.  “ he protects mutants, mostly. ”  he’s going to leave out the whole super-villain aspect of it.  personally, tommy thinks that’s a smear campaign.

   “ with a name like magneto? ” she scoffs, offering up her two cents despite being the least qualified to have an opinion here. “ all his designs are probably epic. super neat-o. rejects aren’t even a blip on that fashion radar. ”

   tommy’s already gearing up to defend a guy who just stuck an o on the end of the word magnet, but she redirects quick enough.  clearly she gets what magneto’s all about.  “ oh, super neat-o indeed. ”  grandpa is, at the very least, dedicated to his very dramatic aesthetic.  “ he’s very committed to the magenta color scheme. ”

The witch looks down at the trunk full of various sentimental items. He wants to find it in him to smile as he looks at some of what was inside, but it’s hard. Billy is just reminded of how angry he was, the way he lashed out when so many members of their family just disappeared. Their mother, their uncle, and their grandfather. “We do deserve them, we can figure out who got ‘em and get what’s rightfully ours.” He moves closer to his twin, something that just happens naturally. “It’s really just the two of us now, isn’t it?”

tommy gives a shrug of his shoulders, tries to play it off like his whole world hasn’t fucking crumbled lately.  he gravitates towards billy, like a satellite.  his elbow bumps billy, and it’s not by accident really.  “ we were the best of ‘em anyway. ”  and lorna’s still out there, right ??  that’s got to be worth something. tommy’s never felt a particular kinship with her, but it’s something.  he sets his jaw, and a muscle twitches under the pressure of his clenched teeth.  “ we’re gonna get them back, billy. ”

 with an exaggerated roll of his eyes, tommy pulls his attention away from the trunk of things he’s going through.  he doesn’t know how it ended up in his possession, family stuff, but whoever sent it his way is a dumbass and a half.  tommy shouldn’t be trusted with anything holding sentimental value whatsoever.  whatever, everyone’s going to be back for it in no time.  “ all this crap, and no one sent me magneto’s backup helmets.  you know he has reject designs somewhere; we deserve them. ”
