I think they would have fun talking about how mercy can look like violence (and vice versa) by using the example of humane ways to kill fish 😊 they should revisit this topic in third semester. feels like it'll be relevant

while i do think that 'joker wanted to take marukis offer, but ultimately didn't bcs akechi asked him not to' is an interpretation that has a place to exist, i do also wish that less people framed it as an act of pure love. because it really isnt, if you think abt it

altho i suppose there is something to be said about overcoming selfish desires and the urge to control for the sake of honoring the wishes of the person etc etc etc............. this, too, could be a form of love. acknowledging the ugly side of your affections and overcoming it etc etc etc...

like. i keep thinking about just how fucked up it would be to go back to your everyday life after everything that happens. Like, sure, its great that he doesnt have all those axes hanging over him anymore (besides the fact that his identity is very much known to the police, and theyre keeping an eye on him, and he doesn't even have any way to fight against that or protect himself anymore bcs hes just a regular ass high schooler ONCE AGAIN. but that is a different can of worms)

but oh my god. how do you cope. how do you go back to where you started from after a change so profound? and youre expected to just, like, act like nothing happened? like youre the same as youve ever been? Finish high school get a degree get a 9-5 job be normal dont think about all that??? And if you rebel again, what do you fall back on? youre just a regular person now, no metaverse, no personas. what can you do? what can you do??? How do you keep your head down after you know what it's like to fight and win??? how do you conform yourself to a box that is much too small for you? and then there's the grief of it all, on top of it. and you still have homework.

realized i can just. talk unprompted about the Thoughts Tm that went into the fic etc etc etc so i might be becoming insufferable soon-ish

ok so [twirls hair] no real editing or structure to this, just vibes.

what i thought was really funny abt the first half of the fic is that Ren and Akechi are more or less on the same page, but they go about it/are dealing with it in just different enough ways that it blows up a little bit. Ren wasn't being clipped in his responses on Purpose. Like, for once, he WASNT trying to piss Akechi off. He's just also Angry, and he's trying to calm down (<-- why he started making coffee. familiar repetitive physical task to focus on!!), and he knows that the stuff he's saying in that moment could make Akechi annoyed, but he also can't really force himself to say anything else. Ren knows that this is a tense moment, that Akechi is Agitated, and he doesn't want to say something rash. So he's trying to calm down first.

And Akechi is too busy playing 5d chess with himself to really notice that. I honestly considered adding an "unreliable narrator" tag, but i felt like that wasn't a strong enough theme to actually tag. but. its there. No matter how well you know each other, you can still misinterpret the other person's mood or intentions. Especially when you're too caught up in your own head at that moment, like Akechi is. So when Ren drops the "i refuse to lose you", its because he didn't expect Akechi to seriously think he's going to take Maruki's offer. He, too, is a bit too caught up in his head at that moment. BUT ALSO. the assumption actually pisses him off. Like don't you know me by now?? don't you know i hate the idea of it as much as you do??? But he loves Akechi more than he's angry at him, and he understands that him assuming the worst comes from a place of Hurt, like a cat lashing out. So he compartmentalizes that, and focuses on actually diffusing the situation. Id like to think that like. several years later he would shoot up in bed in the middle of the night and be like. ok so remember that one time? yeah, FUCK you. (its ok, its enrichment for them) This kind of ties into another thing that i didnt rly plan for, but that just happened on its own. Is that Akechi starts seeing Ren's actual mmmm intentions? more clearly once he lets go of some of his own defenses.

Tho, admittedly. Ren is also Being more clear about his feelings. but its about what he's working with. Even if Ren was clear about his feelings from the start, Akechi would still misinterpret things as long as he doesn't allow himself to consider that love could be part of the equation, from either side. also, on another, semi-related note. I love the 5d chess of it all, its the most fun thing for me.

ren: i like you akechi: i knew that. thats irrelevant.

ren: i wouldnt have taken his offer because im selfish akechi: oh my god why would he say that he loves me NOW of all times???
