The day we arrived there was gorgeous. The next morning was a light drizzle, which was honestly very pretty too, especially with the light fog on the mountains….

You can tour the inside of the Wada House, which is both the tallest house there and the inspiration for the Sonozaki household…

Across the suspension bridge there’s additional, smaller houses for tour at an outdoor museum.

Okunoshima Island!~~~~

One of my favorite spots on my trip to Japan was this island I (or anyone I asked) had never heard of before. The island is accessible via ferry and just off the coast of Tadanoumi (close to Hiroshima). It’s also referred to as “The Rabbit Island” and I believe it’s part of the national park in that area? It was recommended by my friend I was traveling with and was probably one of the highlights of the trip.

The island used to be a secret chemical warfare testing site during WW2. Rabbits were apparently one of the test subjects used for the various chemicals. After the war, they rushed to destroy evidence of the facilities. The rabbits were euthanized and replaced with a ton of rabbits whose friendly progeny run wild and protected there today. The juxtaposition of the cute rabbits lounging in front of the ruins was silly, and the horrific history lesson was quite interesting.

While you’re in town, there are several shops and restaurants to check out that will have rabbit food for you to bring to the island. We grabbed lunch at ‘Cafe Rabbit Paradise’. They had some tasty chicken nanban AND they had those cute, jiggly, pudding rabbits. They gave us complimentary rabbit food for the road :)

Additionally, before our train heading out, we stopped at one of the few okinomiyaki restaurants that were still open late so we could try the “hiroshima style” of the dish. Big tasty.

Honestly, I’d highly recommend making the stop here. It was a little out of the way, so it had to be an all day excursion (coming from Kyoto), but it was totally worth it.

Went on the holy pilgrimage to Hinamiz— I mean Shirakawa-go and y’all it’s so worth with. I spent one night there and I know everyone usually does even less than that but I’m telling you not only was staying the night in one of the farm houses so great but also I was genuinely wishing I had even just a half a day more of time to just unwind there. Such a pretty place…

We even walked like 45 min in the dark to see Keiichi’s house. We saw this crazy gem on the way. Some statue of a child by the crosswalk that has clearly seen better days.
