i stumbled across ‘if you hear a cat at night’ last night and immediately got hit with the realization that your writing reminds me so much of mona awad, who’s genuinely one of my favorite authors ever. the way you perfectly embodied the strange dreamlike whimsy, and how everything feels slightly off kilter in the best possible way, it just scratched an itch i didn’t even realize i had. i don’t know if this makes any sense, but reading it felt weirdly like coming home? it’s not every day you find a fic that captures that exact eccentric slightly unhinged magic you’ve been searching for forever, and i’m absolutely in love with it. i need approximately ten thousand more parts pretty please
i have not read mona awad yet but now i’m definitely going to, typing this through tears rn btw. you don’t understand how much your words mean to me oh my goodness :(( i’m so so happy my little passion project is able to make you feel that way because that is the exact vibe i was worried i wouldn’t be able to encapsulate haha, thank you so much for reading and enjoying if you hear a cat at night, and i hope you find as much of that magic in the chapters to come !! love you sm sweetie

memo ᝰ.ᐟ Posting this earlier than planned again because I knocked it out in like three days and i was dying to share it with you guys. This is for @raceme2hell as she has been waiting for chapter 2. Hope you like it, val :) This chapter basically wrote itself because I barely had to think about the scenes, love that. It's just full of oc dissing jk and him getting his pride hurt every time lol. We'll get to the backstory of jk's screen name later on. Took some inspiration from Jungkook's recent live for that one scene. Anyway, enjoy and until next week! Reblogs and feedback in the comments/my asks are appreciated! <3
p.s. — for my readers outside of the U.S., “blinker” is another term used in America for the turn signal when driving. I will be using both “blinker” and “turn signal/signal” interchangeably.
*Note: The characters in this story will be code switching. All dialogue spoken in Korean, is bold. All dialogue that is not bold, is when the characters are speaking English!*
02 — DID YOU MISS ME?
6 Hours Later, 5:00 AM
Jungkook groans in his sleep, feeling weight on his chest. His eyes open and he tucks his chin into his neck to lift his head slightly. “What the-?” He sees that you are laying on top of him, soundly asleep. He lets out another groan, “Why is she so heavy?” Jungkook blinks, staring at the crown of your hair. He exhales before lowering his head and closing his eyes again to go back to sleep.
9:00 AM
Jungkook stretches his arms out and yawns, “What are you doing?” He speaks to the open refrigerator door.
“I’m seeing if we have more milk. We have cereal but I used the last of the milk for my bowl.” You close the door, empty-handed and meet his bedhead. “We’re all out.”
He shrugs, eyeing the bowl of milk on the breakfast bar that you had eaten cereal out of. “This is enough.” His voice is hoarse. He knows that you never drank the milk that is left over from eating cereal. He reaches over and picks up the bowl. He puts the edge of the bowl to his lips and tilts it to swallow the milk.
He gulps down the last drop of milk and blankly looks down at you, “You were sleeping so soundly on top of me last night.” Shaking his head, he pokes your forehead with his index finger, “You’re the one who said we can’t sleep in the same room. But why do you roll out of bed and on top of me?”
All you do is bite your lip and chuckle, “I guess I haven’t fixed that habit yet, huh?”
“No, you haven’t.” He reaches over your shoulder for a banana on the counter. He peels the peel off with his fingers and speaks while taking a bite of the fruit, “You’re free today, right? Because you’re unemployed now?”
“How do you know that?” You blink. You hadn’t even told your mom or brothers about that yet.
He scoffs, shaking his head. He swallows the piece of banana in his mouth, “How could I not know? You only come back home to this town when you’re in a crisis. Nine years ago, it was because you felt like you were drowning at school.” Jungkook suddenly recalls what happened the last time you two saw each other. He clears his throat, “So you’re free, right?”
You nod.
“Good, we have somewhere to go.”
-
Your breath is steady while you stare at the jump rope on the floor in front of you. “This is the place you wanted to go to? Are you kidding me?”
Jungkook sits on the bench next to you and finishes up his last rep of bicep curls with a 75-lbs dumbbell. He opens his fist and lets the dumbbell fall to the padded floor below his feet. “What? You said that you want to get that-, what was it? ‘Summer body’?” He stands up from the bench and bends down to pick up the boxing gloves that were resting on the floor next to you .
You sigh, still refusing to pick up the rope and start working out.
Jungkook tightens the Velcro straps of the gloves onto his wrists and raises his eyebrows, “What are you doing? Hurry up and start jumping.”
“Do I have to?” You whine, waiting to leave the gym and just rot in bed at home.
“How else are you going to lose this?” He pokes your waist playfully, making you jump.
You gasp and stop yourself from letting out a yelp, as the gym is full of people who could easily hear you. You glare at Jungkook, who just laughs while walking over to the sandbag a few feet away from you.
1 Hour Later, 10:30 AM
“How do you fall while jumping rope?” Jungkook shakes his head while carrying you on his back on your way home.
“The rope was too long. I tripped over it.” You fill him on what happened at the gym ten minutes ago.
“It wasn’t because your legs are too short?” He teases you, earning a light slap on the shoulder blade. “You’re so heavy.” He stops and adjusts his grip, shaking you as you keep sliding down on his back. Having to carry you in this heat and working out for the past hour makes sweat drop from Jungkook’s temple.
“Who asked you to carry me? If I’m too heavy, put me down.”
Jungkook turns his head slightly to his left, “If I put you down, can you walk?”
You don’t answer him.
“Exactly. Just stay there. I guess I just have to suffer.” He turns his head back to face forward. “Why’d you come back here? Is it really because of your job?” He wonders if there’s something you’re not telling him.
“Yeah, why? Why else would I be here?” You lean your chin on his left shoulder, enjoying the ride. You couldn’t tell him everything, not yet.
“Is it because you missed me?” He jokes with you, turning his head to his left before looking straight ahead again.
“Don’t be ridiculous. Why would I miss you?” You lift your head to look at his side profile.
“I don’t know. You could be pining for me for all I know. For the past nine years, since that day. It’s okay, I know I’m great. You can like me all you want.” He smirks, enjoying teasing you too much. It was like that was all he lived for.
“Stop saying bullshit and just walk straight.” You extend out one arm that was wrapped around his neck and point to a giant puddle on the sidewalk coming up. “You’re going to step into the water.”
Jungkook’s feet skid to an abrupt stop and he adjusts his grip before racing forward and through the puddle. Satisfied that he got you wet, he bursts out laughing.
You exhale sharply and put both hands on his neck to choke him. “What the hell did you do that for?!”
“Just because. I wanted you to get wet.” Jungkook coughs. His clothes were soaked as more of the water splashed onto him when he jumped.
“You idiot, you got more wet than I did.” Your clothes and hair are just damp enough to annoy you.
“I don’t care. I got what I wanted.” The smile doesn’t disappear from his face.
“You little-.” You press on his neck harder, getting your revenge. Your grip isn’t strong enough to actually make him short of breath but he coughs as it feels uncomfortable.
“Are you trying to kill me?” His voice is hoarse from all the coughing.
“Yeah, but it’s not working.” You pout, sad that you failed.
“If you kill me, how are you going to live without me?” Jungkook smirks, “The world will be rid of the handsomest guy you know.” He jokes, knowing well enough what comes next.
You exhale, dumbfounded. “Are you really cocky or just an idiot?” You let go of his neck and wrap your arms around it again and peer over, looking at his side profile. “How can you think that this face is handsome, let alone, the most handsome face that I know?”
Jungkook scoffs, now turning his head to the left again to look at you. “Then who’s the handsomest guy you know?”
You smile, thinking back to when you were in college, “The older guy that I had a crush on in college.” You weren’t going to give him the satisfaction.
“Ugh.” Jungkook rolls his eyes.
“No matter how many times you ask, I’m never going to say that it’s you.” You smile, leaning your chin on his shoulder again.
“I don’t need you to. I know that I’m the best-looking guy you know.” Jungkook continues walking home with you on his back.
“How much longer is your mom going to be out of town?” Jungkook carries you into your house.
“Another two weeks, maybe? My grandma’s really sick right now.” You get put down on the couch in the living room and now look up at Jungkook who is out of breath.
“That means I have to stay here with you for another two weeks?” He huffs, barely making out those words. He swallows, trying to catch his breath.
“What are you talking about? Go home. I can stay by myself. And besides, Casey is coming by later.” You stare down at your swollen ankle and Jungkook stares down at it with you.
“Right, I can go.” He blinks, “Bye.” He turns around so fast, almost like he was waiting for your permission to leave.
“Wait! JK!” You catch him before he runs out the front door.
“What?” He whines, standing in front of you again.
“Can you get me an ice pack from the freezer? For my ankle.” You smile.
He sighs and runs into the kitchen, returning 30 seconds later with an ice pack in his hands. He places it on your left ankle, letting out a sigh, “The things I do for you.”
“You should be glad I’m not asking you to help me wash up.”
He glances at you while adjusting the ice pack with his hands, “There isn’t anything you can’t say to me, huh? Is that something you say to a man?”
“You’re not a man to me.”
“Whatever, you brat.” He pokes your forehead with his finger. He lets the ice pack sit by itself on your ankle, “I’m leaving for real this time. If you need anything, don’t call me.”
You give him the finger and he laughs before closing the front door.
17 Hours Later, 3:30 AM
The ongoing chime of an incoming Skype call on your computer stirs you awake at your desk. You dozed off while applying for jobs. “Mm.” You jerk your head up and sleepily read the screen. “What the-? Why is he calling me now?” You answer the call, being greeted by Jungkook’s face that is a little too close to the front face camera.
“Finally. What took you so long to answer?”
“I was asleep, dumbass. Look at the time.” You remind him that you are usually asleep at this time, like he even needed that reminder. You laugh as his face keeps coming closer to the camera, “Your screen name is still ‘Ian J’? You still haven’t changed it?”
“Shut up.” He pouts.
“Back up a little, would you? I can see all of your pores.” You wait until he backs up, but he doesn’t move. You then put two and two together, “Are you drunk?”
“So drunk.” He smiles, now backing up a little from the camera.
You see that he’s shirtless, again. You shield your eyes with your hand, “Do you mind? I don’t want to see you half-naked on camera too. Seeing it in-person yesterday was enough.”
“Hmm?” He hums, then looks down at his chest. “Oh. No, I don’t mind.” He completely ignores what you just said.
You sigh, “So, that’s why you called me at 3:30 in the morning? Because you’re drunk? Instead of going to fucking sleep?” You sit still with your arms relaxed and hands resting on your lap. “What do you want?”
“What do you mean? I just missed you, babe, that’s all.” He laughs and blinks slowly, his eyelids feeling heavy.
You roll your eyes, “I told you not to call me that. Seriously, why did you call me at this hour?”
He exhales, looking away from the camera. “I have a favor to ask.” He zones out, his eyes widening.
“What is it?” You patiently wait until his focus is back on the video call.
“Can you buy me a pack?” He giggles, looking back at the camera.
You exhale deeply, “You want me to go buy you cigarettes? At this hour? Say something that makes sense.”
“You can just go to 7Eleven and buy me a pack.” He’s wasted and thinking about smoking right now. Unbelievably.
“Hello? Jungkook?” You raise your eyebrows at the immature boy on the other side of the call. He hums to signal that he’s listening. “I can’t go anywhere right now. I hurt my ankle, remember?”
“Your ankle still hurts?” It’s like he had completely forgotten what happened less than 24 hours ago.
“Come on!” You groan loudly, but then remember that Casey was sleeping next door so you lower your voice, “You can’t even remember that? How much did you drink exactly?” You shake your head.
“Way too much.” He giggles again, laying his head down on his comforter.
“Where are you anyway?” You didn’t recognize the part of his bedroom that you could see in the background.
“My apartment. It’s like 30 minutes away from my mom’s.” He begins to sober up a little while talking to you.
“Exactly, you’re not even here right now. More of a reason why I can’t buy you cigs.” You yawn, “Just go to sleep.”
“I don’t want to. I want to talk to you more.”
“You see me everyday. What’s there to talk about?” Your right hand is resting on the computer mouse, with the cursor hovering over the red button with the phone angled face-down. “I’m going back to sleep.”
“Wait! You-!” Jungkook gets cut off as you end the video call.
You close all the windows open on your computer before turning it off so that you wouldn’t be woken up in case he calls you again. “That punk. He’s so annoying.” You mumble to yourself as you stretch your arms up in the air and stand up from the desk chair. Your eyelids begin to feel heavy again while you drag your feet forward and crawl into bed. You curl up under the covers, feeling your body relax as your eyes close.
One Week Later
“When did you move?” You keep your eyes on the road. The silence after your question makes you glance to your right at Jungkook who’s sitting in the passenger seat. He’s frozen in the seat and holding onto the grab handle right above the passenger side door on the roof of your sedan. “Are you listening? When did you move?” You repeat yourself, looking back at the road.
“About a year ago.” His voice shakes. “When did you get your license again?” He closes his eyes and grits his teeth, feeling his stomach clench up.
“Two years ago. Would you relax? You’re not going to die.” You don’t know why he’s acting like this.
“You don’t know that.” His voice now steadies and he finally glances at you after avoiding looking anywhere else but straight ahead for the past hour and a half.
“Stop overreacting. I’m not going to kill you.” You wanted him to trust your driving.
“You don’t know that either.” He’s feeling very insecure right now. “This is why we should’ve taken my motorcycle.”
You scoff, “You’re crazy if you think I’m ever going to get on the back of that death machine. Have you even seen yourself drive?”
“I trust myself with that more than I’d ever trust you with driving a car.” He scoffs, wanting to start an argument with you.
“Get out.”
“We’re on the highway! Are you trying to kill me?!” Jungkook raises his voice, tightening his grip on the handle.
“Exactly!” You raise your voice back at him. “So, just shut the fuck up and relax!” You lower your voice, calming down. “I know what I’m doing.”
Jungkook lets go of the grab handle and lowers his arm. He relaxes into the leather chair and sits still, not saying a word the rest of the way there.
-
You and Jungkook sit down on the grass side by side in front of Jungkook’s dad’s headstone. The front of the headstone is decorated with new flowers that you had brought to switch out the wilted bouquet from Jungkook’s last visit. You have your legs folded against your chest and are hugging your knees while Jungkook sits criss-cross and has his torso leaned forward to clean up the weeds in front of the flowers.
Jungkook breaks the ten minutes of silence you two had been sitting in with a laugh, “Dad, you know she almost killed me on the way here today?”
“I brought both of us here safely. What are you talking about?” You lightly slap his arm. “Mister, don’t listen to him. He’s just kidding.”
Jungkook laughs while looking at you, “Still, he should know how bad of a driver you are. How you’d risk transporting this precious cargo with a driver’s license that’s still only two years old.”
“Would you just shut up? I came to say ‘hello’ to your dad for the first time in while. I don’t want him to see us bickering.”
“He’s used to it, don’t worry.” Jungkook reminds you that you two have been engaging in playful banter for over 20 years. “And I think it’d be weird if we got along.”
You chuckle as you reach forward and softly rub the top of the headstone with your hand to dust it off.
-
“You’re not such a bad driver.” Jungkook compliments you, which is something that he rarely does.
“I told you to trust me.” You look straight ahead, keeping the car steady.
“Why’d you come with me?” He suddenly asks, as if you’ve never come with him before.
“I always come with you. What are you talking about?”
“No, I mean today. Why did you come today?” Jungkook looks at you with relaxed eyes, noticing that you hadn’t looked at him once since you two had gotten in the car to head back home. “You were supposed to meet your dad today, weren’t you?” He reads right through you. You couldn’t hide anything from him.
It was annoying sometimes.
You don’t answer him because he’s right. You were supposed to meet your dad today.
You had gotten a call from him in almost two years asking to meet. He wanted to have lunch with you. But you knew that there was more to it than just that.
Your dad re-married a woman three years ago, and she has a son, who was 5 years old at that time. You knew that if you went out to meet your dad, his new family would also be there with him. The last thing you wanted was to get involved with them. Not because you disliked your father, you didn’t. You harbored no hard feelings towards him anymore.
You just didn’t see any reason why you should meet his new family.
“Or you got stood up by a guy?” Jungkook knows he is right but tries to lighten your mood as you are awfully quiet.
“Yeah, let’s go with that.” You answer him, keeping your eyes on the road in front of you. “Did you ask my friends who went to the reunion? About what I told them?” You go back to the conversation you and he had a week and a half ago while making a left turn.
The blinker clicks in the background while Jungkook answers your question, “Yeah, I did. You’ve been single your entire life, so I immediately knew that you were lying.”
The signal turns off automatically as you continue the conversation, “How do you know I’ve been single all my life? We haven’t seen each other for the past nine years. I could’ve had a boyfriend during that time.”
Jungkook laughs, “I know you. You wouldn’t date just anyone.”
“And you know my ideal type so well?” You chuckle, surprised that he would know stuff like that, especially since you never told him.
“Yeah.” He tilts his head to the left and leans his temple against the back of the chair. His voice suddenly deepens, “Guys like me.”
“Yeah, right,” you scoff. “In your dreams.”
“What?” His voice rises in pitch. “What’s wrong with guys like me?”
You squint, finally making eye contact with him. “You’re better off not knowing. To protect your ego.” You shake your head while turning it back around so you face forward again, “It’s too bad that drafting in the military isn’t mandatory for men here like it is in Korea.”
“Why are you suddenly talking about the military?”
“I just think that you’d mature a little if you drafted. You’re 28 years old and still immature.” You sigh, as if you were talking to yourself right now.
“What do you mean? I am mature.” Jungkook emphasizes.
“In what way? In what way are you mature? Your build? Your muscles?” You bicker with him again.
“Yeah! That’s all a man needs to be considered mature.” He defends himself.
“Ha. As if. You also have to think like an adult to be considered a man, Jungkook. You still have a long way to go.”
He scoffs while smiling. He’s on the verge of hitting something or even someone. He’s never had his pride hurt like this before. “You sure about that?”
“Sure about what?” You glance over at him, hoping this is not another one of his stupid bets.
“Are you sure that I’m not a man yet?” He looks at you with a determined look in his eyes. Which is exactly what you feared.
“Don’t tell me.” You chuckle awkwardly, “This is not another one of your-?”
“Bring it on. I’ll show you that I’m a man.” Jungkook smiles proudly, knowing that he now has you on your toes.
You groan, knowing exactly where this is headed. Obviously, you were not looking forward to it. “I’m the idiot for mentioning that in the first place. Stupid.” You curse yourself out, regretting ever provoking him.
You had forgotten about how no one should ever, and you mean, ever provoke or challenge Jungkook Jeon.
Because once you do, he turns mad and there’s no going back.
You could only hope that it didn’t go to extremes this time. Then again, much to your luck, very few things turned out in your favor lately. So you couldn’t really predict how this would turn out.
Because while he’s still your best friend, there’s something different about him. You just couldn’t put your finger on what it is.
“How much are we betting this time?” You exhale, immediately getting down to the details.
He shakes his head, “We’re not betting money this time.”
“Then what are we betting?” Well that’s a first.
“It’s a secret.” Jungkook smiles like a child.
“That’s not fair! That puts you at an advantage.” Your voice involuntarily rises to a higher pitch.
“That’s the point.” He sticks his tongue out at you and smiles bigger.
Oh yeah. He’s definitely a man. “What if I just agree that you’re a man? Then we can forget about this whole thing and no one gets hurt.” You pull over and stop the car on the shoulder of the main road that you are on.
“Nope, you can’t back out of this now. You agreed.”
“I never agreed to anything! You just started this stupid crap up again.” You whine.
“Then you should've never provoked me. I took that as a bet. You know what happens when you provoke me.” He smirks, getting ready to prove you wrong.
“Whatever, get out.” You shoo him away.
“We’re over an hour away from home. What do you want me to do? Walk the rest of the way?” Jungkook raises his eyebrows, surprised at this new short-temper of yours.
“Yeah, why don’t you do that?” Your eyes glare at him so intensely, it was like lasers were shooting out of them.
“Is it that time of the month for you?” He’s genuinely curious whether or not this short-temper is because of monthly hormonal changes, because for all he knew, it could be.
“Hey!” You hiss, the glare in your eyes still just as intense.
Jungkook defensively raises his hands. “Sorry, I’ll just shut up about that now.”
You exhale deeply before putting the car back in “Drive” and taking off again.
“How’s your ankle?” He’s careful about asking that, as you are tense right now.
“I’m surprised you remember. You couldn’t remember when you drunk-called me last week.” Your eyes relax again as you make a right turn.
“Of course I remember. I had to suffer carrying you in the heat that day. Is it better?”
“Casey took me to the doctor and they said that it’s a mild sprain. That it should be better in two weeks.” You pause while making another turn. “That’s in a couple of days, so-.” You cut yourself off, looking over at Jungkook.
“You good to drive? Want me to take over?”
“You’re asking that now?” You raise your eyebrows and your sarcastic tone doesn’t amuse him.
“Forget it, never mind.” He sighs, “So much for trying to be nice.”
You smile to yourself while keeping your eyes on the road.
Two Days Later, 11:00 PM
“Tell me again what I’m doing here.” You sit on the floor of the gym in his apartment building while he repeatedly punches the sandbag.
Jungkook huffs, out of breath. He stops punching to slip his right hand out of the boxing glove and curls his right fingers, asking you for the towel that’s around your neck. He catches it when you throw it at him. He wipes off the sweat on his jaw and neck with the towel before exhaling sharply, “You’re here to watch me work out.”
“Exactly. But why am I here to watch you?”
He smiles through his breaths, throwing the towel back at you. Putting the boxing glove back on his right hand, he starts back up again, hitting the sandbag repeatedly from various directions.
“Ugh, that’s disgusting.” The towel damp with his sweat lands on your head. You could smell the sweat so you frantically moved the towel off of your head with both your hands. You watch as Jungkook mumbles, “One, two. One, two.” to himself while grunting and punching the bag over and over again. You let out a groan and lean back until your back hits the floor. You now blankly stare at the ceiling, with your arms extended out to the sides.
11:30 PM
“Why did I just waste an hour in the middle of the night watching you hit a sandbag?” You follow him into the elevator.
“You have to admit, I looked pretty cool while working out, didn’t I?” He avoids answering your question, too busy gloating.
“You’re so full of yourself.” You scoff, “Seriously, tell me. Why did I have to spend the last hour with you? It’s not even your birthday.” Getting off of the elevator, you keep following behind him like a puppy waiting to be fed.
He reaches his apartment door, unlocking it with his house keys. “I’m not telling you.” He turns his head to the right and winks.
“You punk.” You mumble, annoyed that you now had to go home late because of him.
Once he unlocks the door, he pushes it open by the door knob and looks at you who’s just standing still. “You’re not coming in?”
“No. I’m going home.”
“Why not? Come in.”
You shake your head, folding your arms across your chest. “How can I go into the apartment of a man who lives alone late at night? Do you know what that means?”
Jungkook tilts his head and chuckles, “What are you thinking right now?”
“Exactly what you’re thinking.”
He lets go of the door knob and suddenly pins you against the hallway wall. Your eyes widen at his sudden move. One of his hands is against the wall as he looks down at you intensely. His voice gets lower and he whispers, “I guess I seem like a man to you now?”
“Nope.” You shake your head as your eyes smile. You watch as Jungkook’s eyes relax. “Hurry up and go take a shower. You stink.” You nag, frowning at the smell of his sweat.
He takes his arm off of the wall and steps back, “Go home, you brat.”
You laugh, “I’ll see you later. ‘Night.”
“Night.” He grumbles, disappearing into his apartment.
12:00 PM
“Where have you been? Do you know what time it is?” A familiar voice calls from the bedroom right in front of the staircase of the second floor as you walk past the doorway.
You retreat to the doorway, noticing that Spencer was back from his training seminar. “I know, Spencer. I was with Jungkook.” You reassure your older brother who’s playing a video game.
“You two still hang out together? Are you two dating now?” He takes his eyes off of the game he’s playing on his PlayStation to look at your repulsed face.
“Spencer. Why would you say something so awful? I would never date him.”
“Why not? He’s good-looking and tall.” Your brother shrugs.
“How is he good-looking? I have no idea why people say he is.” You lean your right shoulder against the door frame.
“Never say never. You never know what’s going to happen between a man and a woman.” He implies that you and Jungkook could become more than friends. But to you, that is highly unlikely.
“Where’s Casey?” It’s oddly quiet without your other brother in the house.
“With his girlfriend. He’ll be back tomorrow.” Spencer goes back to the video game.
“Wait, then why are you here already?” You had just realized that he’s not supposed to be here for another couple of days.
“Casey asked me to come over and keep an eye on you.” He glances at you before focusing on the video game again, “Girl, you’re not even happy to see your older brother?” His thumbs twiddle with the joysticks and buttons on the controller.
“No, I’m not.” You tease him, sticking your tongue out at him and running away to your bedroom.
Spencer chuckles, shaking his head.
The Next Day, 6:30 PM
“I just can’t believe it.” You sit across from Jungkook, watching him with fascination.
“You can’t believe what?” He concentrates on the task at hand.
“Your job. It doesn’t suit you at all.”
He scoffs, glancing up at you, “What kind of job suits me then?” He takes the bowl in his hands with him as he moves over to the stove on the other side of the kitchen.
“I don’t know.” You shrug, “You’re such an immature guy that still drives a motorcycle that I don't know what suits you.” You tilt your head to the left and suck on your teeth, trying to think.
“Would you stop calling me immature?” He slightly turns his head to speak over the noise of the vent fan that’s on above the stove and grits his teeth. “Believe it or not, I’m pretty good at my job.”
“I'll believe it when I see it.”
“How’s job hunting going?” The clanging of dirty dishes and utensils echoes over his voice as he drops them into the sink.
“Slow. No one’s hiring right now, it’s annoying. I need to get a job soon.” You groan and bury your head in your arms on the counter.
“So then why did you quit your other job?”
You lift your head and look at the back of his head, “It’s not that I quit. I got fi-.” You don’t continue that sentence, realizing that you’ve told him too much already.
Jungkook exhales, turning his head around to look at you. “Why did you lie about having a boyfriend? Are you that embarrassed about never having had a boyfriend?”
“I don’t know.” You whine, “My friends just kept asking me about it and I didn’t want to deny it. It is embarrassing that I’ve never been in a relationship. I’m already 28 and I haven’t even had my first kiss yet.” You exhale, “You obviously wouldn’t know what that feels like. Now I don’t know what to do. They asked me who he is and everything.”
“Do you want me to help you?”
You furrow your eyebrows, “With what?”
Jungkook now completely stops what he’s doing, and turns his body around to face you. His voice is steady, meaning every word he’s about to say, “Do you want me to help you and be your boyfriend?”
