We don’t talk anymore (Part 5)

The library was unusually quiet for a Saturday morning and you arrived earlier than everybody else to claim a table. Shortly after you finished getting set-up with all the resources you brang, Mimi arrived.

“You’ve been saving some information to tell me in real life right?” Mimi asked with her arms folded on the table, attentively listening for your next response.

“Don’t get your hopes up Mimi.”

“So there is information?!”

“Luckily for you, there is. Well, to start off Keonho is really good at making bird noises”

“I didn’t know I needed to know that about him, but thanks i guess?”

“And…” You continued.

“And?”

“He receives a bunch of love letters from girls.”

“That’s kinda off-putting. Ugh, y/n why would you even tell me that?

“You was the one who asked me for an update!”

“Wait- so your saying your not one of the girls who wrote him a letter?” You added.

“What? No. Of course not. How would I even deliver it to him? He doesn’t go to my school.” Mimi responded defensively, crossing her arms.

“I mean knowing you, you would probably hire someone to sneak it into his locker” You answered, nudging her shoulder to make fun of her.

“How low do you think of me? Anyways when is this Martin guy arriving, I still can’t believe you let him join our session today.”

“Free food is free food.”

“Wait- so are you over Keonho already? Last week you would’ve been ecstatic and used Martin joining as a way to get even more information on Keonho.”

“Well now I know everything I need to know about him.” Mimi sighed as she stared into the distance of the library building.

15 minutes passed as you waited for Martin to arrive to the tutoring session.

Mimi suggested that you should just start without him, which didn’t seem like a bad idea but you knew how desperate he was to attend in the first place so you gave him 5 more minutes of grace.

“Is that…keonho?!” Mimi suddenly asked covering her mouth and pointing down at the library entrance.

You also turned your head to look down and watched as Keonho pulled the library door open whilst Martin, who was holding 2 iced teas, used the revolving door entrance.

“What’s he doing here?!” Mimi quickly asked once she realised it was him, checking how she looked in her pocket mirror.

“No idea. Martin never said anything about him coming.”

“He looks even better in real life. Forget what I said before.”

“I knew you would change your mind. You stop crushing on boys just as quick you start liking them again.”

Since they were on the ground floor and the escalator stopped working they had a couple flights of stairs to take before they saw you.

“Okay quick y/n is there anything else I need to know about him?”

“About the love letters. He didn’t throw any of them away because he said he’d feel bad. So don’t worry, there’s still a chance he could read yours.”

“Y/n. I promise you I didn’t write him a letter omg.” Mimi rolled her eyes before adjusting her position on the seat and fixing her hair.

“Sorry for the lateness tutor.” Martin announced as he laid the drinks he brang on the table and removed his leather jacket to put over the seat next to you.

“Uh where’s my apology? Both of us waited for you to arrive? Mimi blurted, earning a glance from Keonho who was standing next to Martin’s seat, looking slightly terrified.

“Martin this is Mimi. Mimi this is Martin.”

“Sorry about that, and nice to meet you.” Martin responded offering his hand out to shake with hers.

“This isn’t a business meeting. Let’s just start already.” Mimi coldly replied, rejecting his handshake, resulting in Martin making a defeated nod.

“Keonho are you joining us?” You asked, holding the textbooks you brang to straighten it.

“I think I’ll sit somewhere else for now. I got a separate test I need to study for.” Keonho said as he scratched his head, soon walking away to a table nearby yours.

“Those drinks are for you guys by the way.”

“Thanks.” Mimi replied coolly grabbing the iced tea straight away to take a sip, making Martin visibly relax a little.

You instead nodded and began the session.

“Martin, that’s the easiest part of the syllabus.” Mimi retorted.

“I know, that’s why I want to go over it”

“That’s not how it works, your supposed to go over topics that you find the hardest to learn, not the easiest.” You added.

“Yeah, but if I go over the easiest topic then at least I can secure marks if it comes up”

“I’ve got flashcards on that for you. Go over it throughout the rest of the weekend.”

An hour passed by of you testing them on various history topics. Mimi was your golden student, whilst Martin had clearly never been more academically challenged until today.

He kept drawing skulls and his signature on the whiteboard he was supposed to write his answers on.

“Martin can you focus for a second and stop drawing!”

“My bad.”

“I’m taking a break y/n.” Mimi then walked off passing by Keonho who was still studying with his headphones plugged in.

“I think Keonho might be scared of your friend.”

“Really, what makes you think that?”

“Let’s just say she’s quite blunt, even more than you.”

“Yeah she can come across like that. Wait- even more than me?

“I mean yeah, your not that cold, or maybe I’ve just gotten used to it.”, he laughs.

Keonho grabs the shoulders of Martin when he arrives and they dap each other up.

“Oh look y/n’s friend is coming” Martin jokes pointing towards the library corridor.

You and Martin both watch Keonho’s face slightly drop as he turns and let out a small giggle, being cautious of setting you were in.

“Keonho don’t be scared of Mimi” Martin added.

“Scared? I’m not scared of her.” Keonho shot back defensively.

“So why’d you message, asking if she was gone?”

“Alright, thanks for exposing me. And where’s my iced tea?”

Mimi then walked back over, at what seemed like perfect timing, sipping on what you now learnt was supposed to be his iced tea.

“Oh, right”. Keonho watched Mimi sip on his drink and went back to his seat almost immediately after giving Martin a look of disapproval.

“Okay let’s finish off what we’ve learnt today with a mini test.” You announced when Mimi was sat down.

You set a 30 minute timer for them and opened instagram with your volume fully down to see that Martin had sent you a bunch of reels last night at 3am.

“So this is why he was late today.”, you thought to yourself amused.

From the corner of your eye, you noticed Martin was also looking at your phone, suppressing a laugh with his hand.

“You need to go back and watch that one specifically.” He pointed towards a reel that had a thumbnail of a cat standing like a human.

“Just focus on your test please.”

Martin nodded, still smiling to himself, before visibly locking in again.

At the end of the 30 minute timer, you collected both their tests and marked it quickly. Martin surprisingly didn’t perform badly, considering he was more occupied with drawing ealier.

“Make sure to go over the flashcards I gave you over the weekend.”

“Sure thing.” He replied walking over to Keonho to tell him that tutoring was over.

Soon enough, all four of you headed down the library stairs when Keonho suddenly paused at the sound of gmail notification.

He grabbed his phone almost immediately out his jacket fleece pocket before looking at Martin and saying,

“Imagine.”

“Imagine what?” Martin asked unfazed, jogging down the stairs ahead of us whilst crunching on the hula-hoops he brang.

“Imagine if it’s the entertainment label.”

Martin climbed back up the stairs and swiped Keonho’s phone out his hand and they both leaned into each other, attentively at looking at his screen.

“You got a callback.” Martin announced staring at Keonho with a look of disbelief with his hands on his head more shocked then Keonho himself.

“I- I got a callback.” Keonho returned a look of shock after it sank in and his open mouth soon turned into a surprised smile.

“Wait let me check my phone, I didn’t get a notification, hold on a sec.”

Martin faced his phone and body away from Keonho whilst opening the gmail app.

“They sent me an email too. 10 minutes ago.” Martin blurted.

Before you knew it, Keonho was lifted from ground by Martin, before he slapped his shoulder telling him to let him down.

They frantically laughed, still out of shock before the library supervisor alerted them to quiet down.

You smiled gently as you watched them celebrate, unaware that this email was the first step towards the life Martin always dreamed of and the beginning of Martin becoming the person you would eventually have to learn to live without.

Before school, Y/N would always go on an early morning walk, enjoying the calmness the empty streets emitted. It always helped him clear his mind before he headed into school. 

Today was no different. Except, it was.

Today, as he was walking down the same street he always did, he saw some movement ahead of him, and when he focused on it, he saw that it was a fox. And the fox appeared to have an injured front paw, as it was hopping along, hardly putting any pressure on it.

Y/N decided to carefully head towards the creature, kneeling down once he was close enough and quietly calling it over.

“Hey baby, come here.” he murmurs softly, smiling slightly when it does come towards him, albeit nervously. “It’s okay. I won’t hurt you.”

The fox sniffed the air near him before scurrying back slightly when he moved his hand.

“Sorry, sorry. It’s okay.” he murmurs, holding his hand out for the creature to sniff him, and while it takes a few minutes, Y/N is eventually able to pick up the fox, holding it carefully against his chest while he walks back home.

Once he makes it back home, Y/N heads straight up to his bedroom, closing the door behind him and settling the fox down on the floor. As he sits down as well, the fox remains surprisingly calm, even approaching the boy and sniffing him again, before hopping away slightly.

“It’s okay, you’re safe hise.” he whispers, grabbing his first aid kit out of his desk before waiting for the magnificent animal to approach him again. As he waits, Y/N is able to fully admire the animal, taking in the gorgeous burnt orange fur, and the stunning brown eyes.

Eventually, it makes its way back over to him, and he carefully picks it up, apologising the whole time as he cleans the injured paw, carefully pulling out a small nail from its paw pad before wrapping the smallest bandage he could find around the creature’s paw.

“Thise you go.” Y/N mumbles softly, letting the animal go and watching it hobble away before leaping on to his bed and examining its paw.

However, he notices the clock and realises that he has to get ready for school now, so he quickly gets changed into his outfit for the day before rushing out of his room and down to the kitchen, where he quickly makes his lunch for the day before heading out of the house and towards his school.

During his lunch break, Y/N is sitting with his friends, telling them about the fox he found that morning.

“It was so cute, but it had a nail stuck in its paw. I had to take it home and help it.” he smiles softly, a few of his friends agreeing.

“You took a random wild animal into your house, and left it there while you came to school.” One of his friends laughs, not cruelly, just shocked. “What if it destroys your bedroom? How do you explain that to your parents?”

“I…I didn’t really think that far. It won’t though. It was so calm and, like I said, it's got an injured paw. I don’t think it’ll be able to damage much of anything.” The boy murmurs.

While Y/N is at school, the fox in his bedroom disappeared and in its place was a boy around his age, sitting on his bed and utterly confused by where he was.

As he looks around the room, he looks down at his hand and sees a bandage on the bed, and he then spots a deep cut on his palm, with dried blood around it.

“Damn.” The fox-boy mutters, his eyes darting around before landing on a first aid kit, so he carefully makes his way towards it, gently placing a plaster over the cut. “I gotta stop transforming so much.” He mumbles to himself, exploring the bedroom he was stuck in for the time being.

Back at school, Y/N sits in the library with one of his friends, searching up how to take care of an injured fox on the school computers.

“‘Take out whatever injured it then release it back outside’ is just not helpful advice. The poor thing could barely walk when I found it.” Y/N sighs, glancing at his friend.

“Don’t look at me, I don’t even know where the medicine cupboard is in my house.” They joke, causing them both to burst into a fit of giggles, receiving glares from the people around them. “No but seriously, you’ll be fine. You’re basically an expert in helping animals at this point.”

“I wish.”

“You’re gonna be a vet, right? I feel like if you don’t say yes right now, you’ve been possessed.” his friend grins.

“Of course I am.” Y/N laughs. “I wonder if the fox is a boy or girl. I feel bad calling it ‘it’, y’know? Like the thing has its own family and life, and I’m here calling it…’it’.”

“...You’re the only person in the world worried about offending a literal fox. I don’t think it cares.” They tease lightly, receiving a playful shove in return.

Thankfully for the boy, the rest of the school day seems to fly by, meaning he can rush home to see how the fox is doing.

Once Y/N gets home, the fox-boy doesn’t hear the front door open. Or anyone coming upstairs. He only registers the bedroom door opening, and he looks at the door in shock before quickly transforming back into his fox form.

But not quite quick enough, as Y/N drops his bag in shock.

“What the hell?!” he gasps, shutting his door behind him and looking at the fox. “You were just human.” he points at it, practically accusing it of a crime, and the fox shakes its head, before stopping itself.

“And you just understood me?” he exclaims. “I…I thought I was just helping a poor fox but no, of course the first fox I see in years turns out to be some kind of witch.” Y/N rants, pacing back and forth, not looking at the fox.

“I-I’m not a witch.” The fox, now a boy, comments quietly, making Y/N jump anyway, turning around and backing away.

“Yeah, sure you aren’t. What are you then?”

“My name is Seonghyeon.”

“Okay, sure, nice to meet you. What are you?”

“I’m…a fox hybrid. We’re pretty rare. Hybrids, I mean.” The fox-boy, Seonghyeon, offers nervously.

“This is a dream. That’s the only explanation.” Y/N mutters under his breath, backing away more as Seonghyeon stands up, the boy's guard clearly up.

“You aren’t dreaming. We…we aren’t really allowed to go out, but ‘cause I’m a fox hybrid I can sneak out really easily-”

“No, no! How have I never heard of hybrids? I love animals, I think I would’ve heard of them.” Y/N interrupts, now looking over the boy, as if looking for something on him that would tell him that he’s lying. 

Instead, he only notices two burnt orange ears sticking up out of his hair, which appears to offend him.

“What the…” Y/N trails off, his curiosity overpowering his confusion, and he slowly walks towards the fox-boy, running his hands through his hair and gently touching his ears, making the boy sigh softly. “Oh! Sorry. I should’ve…asked. Or just not done that.” he clears his throat, retracting his hand back and taking a step back.

“It’s okay. I get it. People don’t exactly see hybrids all that often.” Seonghyeon murmurs, a cute lopsided smile on his lips, making Y/N coo softly at him.

The pair head outside and for the next couple of hours, Y/N asks the fox-boy any question that comes to his mind about his whole being a hybrid thing.

“So, were you born like this? Or is it like a government experiment?” he asks, his head tilted towards the fox-boy as they both lie on the leaf covered ground, smiling softly as he laughs.

“Born like this.” He grins.

“Do you prefer being a fox or a human?”

“Depends on the situation.”

“That’s not an answer!” Y/N laughs, playfully nudging his shoulder, before they both settle into a calm quiet. “How’s your hand?”

“It’s not too bad. It hurt more as a fox, ‘cause like, relative size y’know?” Seonghyeon responds softly, automatically going to brush his fingers over the plaster covering the wound. “Thanks for helping me. I mean, I was just a fox to you, and you still helped me.”

“Of course I did. If anything it’s more reason to help you as a fox than as a human. Not that I wouldn’t have helped you, but, I saw a helpless animal in pain. I had to help.” Y/N responds softly, sitting up slightly and taking the fox-boy’s injured hand in his, gently brushing over the plaster. “Y’know, never in a million years did I think I’d be friends with a fox hybrid.”

They both laugh softly at his comment, with Seonghyeon sitting up as well and watching Y/N as he holds his hand in his.
