Watership Down Tv series: Silver Fan-Design
(Greetings to whoever’s viewing this! This is my first time posting something original on here. Tbh, I wasn’t sure if I should even post this. I’m still kinda nervous about putting stuff online, especially on a place like tumblr. Then again this post is so long I’m sure almost no one will read it. So I guess I shouldn’t worry too much.)
Where to start….
For those who don’t know, Silver (not to be confused with that hedgehog that screams, “IT’S NO USE!!!!”) is a rabbit character from the 1978 movie, “Watership Down,” which was infamous due to its disturbing imagery, mainly the violence, and for apparently traumatizing an entire generation of children.
Watership Down the Tv Series is a kiddie adaptation of Watership Down released in 1999. Yes, they actually tried making Watership Down child-friendly. Crazy right? Whether or not it’s any good is a different story.
Errrrrrm…..maybe I should talk about why I made this drawing. Well there were two things that inspired me to make this. First was a fanfiction I read on FFN based on the WSD TV series, made by a fellow called CrispinVCampion. It’s basically a novelization of the show, with a few changes. One of those changes of course being the inclusion of Silver.
Then there was another guy, Demonic-Pokeyfruit, who did his own 1999 version of Silver on Deviantart. Something I didn’t expect to see.
With all that out the way, here is my interpretation of what Silver would look like in the Tv series:
I tried using season 3’s artstyle, because I felt it would suit the character better. It’s not a perfect emulation of the style, but it’s still pretty good. For the design itself, I took inspiration from Bigwig and Blackberry’s designs. Mainly Bigwig’s from season 3 , and Blackberry’s from seasons 1-2.
(My reference images) Silver’s head in my design is a little similar to Blackberry ‘s, but it’s longer, skinnier, and lacks the splits on each cheek.
I also decided to give him a generous amount of floof around his neck, but without it going into a full mane like Bigwig has.
Personal Nitpicks:
While I did enjoy making this, there’s a few minor problems I have with it. I definitely need to clean up my drawing. It’s still kinda sketchy. I also might’ve made Silver’s face a little too menacing in this drawing, but maybe that’s just me. That’s not all. Below I circled some mistakes in the image that I wanted to fix.
First I need to tweak the ears to make them look more Tv series-like. His “hair” also appears to have three splits when there were only supposed to be two. He has this weird eyebrow looking thing on his forehead as a result of me not cleaning up the drawing, and I accidentally gave him those eyelash-looking things on one of his highlights. And the whiskers are a bit off. But like I said, all of these issues are incredibly minor.
To finish things off, I have a confession to make. I never actually finished the design. This is just the design for the head. I’m still deciding on how the body should look. Perhaps some of you can help me out with that (but that’s assuming anyone’s gonna bother responding to this post). But what do you think of this fan-design so far? Tell me what you like or dislike about it, and whether you think it fits into the TV Series.
Would also love to know everyone’s thoughts on this post overall, including criticisms if any, and what I could possibly do to improve. Just be civil please about it, and sfw interactions only please.
Oh, and I guess you can use my fan-design if you want, so long as you don’t use it for anything weird or gross (for example: nsfw, or weird/creepy ships, which I believe is referred to as proshipping). And you give me proper credit.
Update 7/1/25: I managed to sketch up a design for the body.
Now, this is only one idea, not a definitive design, but lemme know what you think if you can.
And the other day, I cleaned up and tweaked the head sketch like I wanted. So here’s the current version:
That’s all I wanted to say. M’kay see ya’ll!
As much as I ADORE Richard A. and his work, regarding Watership Down It’s really and I mean REALLY hard to Ignore the very In-your-face misogyny {Not the commentary ON misogyny, I adore the horror that Is Efrafa as a whole, and how most adaptations build up on that fact! Bucks refusing to dig because Its seen as a doe job, rarely seeing any does In the owsla etc etc.}that sometimes bleeds Into the story. . .Because why are most of the does minus Hyzenthlay either just name-drops or plot-devices the protagonist need to obtain?! DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON HOW BIGWIG TREATED HYZENTHLAY IN TALES THAT ONE TIME! Like Its no wonder most of the adaptations gender-bends the main-cast of bucks because the does don’t really have that big of a stand-alone personality! OH NILDRO-HAIN THE CHARACTER YOU COULD’VE BEEN INSTEAD OF JUST STRAWBERRY’S CANON EVENT! It's no wonder NONE and I mean NONE of the adaptations even bother to put her In. {Even though Its the main reason Strawberry decides to leave but okay, OKAY she's not Important. . .} -{🐻🍂.}
YEAH!! Like, PLEASE let Nildro-hain speak! Give Clover a bigger role and more personality! Let Hyz and Thethu talk more--give Thethuthinnang a personality! Who is Thrayonlosa!! TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED TO NELTHILTA PLS GET HER OUT OF EFRAFA IN THE EPILOGUE!!
And UGH don't even get me started on Tales, so many characters were so OOC
Another illustrated scene from my fic! This time for chapter 2 <3 Plus another one under the cut with a spooky friend ;)
hiccup and toothless kids are raised together in the real version of httyd 3 i dont know why dreamworks is lying to you guys

You've heard of Childhood Friends au, now get ready for Growing Old Together 🫶 (this is also a Childhood Friends au BUT they actually become husbands)
God their so corny and ughhhhhh I love them sm 😭😭💞💞💞💞
You've heard of Childhood Friends au, now get ready for Growing Old Together 🫶 (this is also a Childhood Friends au BUT they actually become husbands)
You get transported in the WD universe, what role would you be? A seer rabbit, a owsla rabbit, a leader rabbit, a storyteller rabbit or an architect rabbit?
I think I would immediately get killed by elil in fact 😔 I am not the most observant guy around
But being a storyteller would be cool! I love writing stories and I have so much respect for keepers of oral histories.
i wanna talk about how endearing strawberry is!!! it's so obvious how bad he wanted a friend judging by the way he interacts with hazel, he's so eager to show him around! he even introduced nildro-hain to the newcomers (which in the russian adaptation was even cuter since there's not really an equivalent word for "doe" in the language, so he called her his Wife)!! then, with her death as a final push to leave the warren, he escapes with hazel & co and tries his HARDEST to atone for his complacency!
he recognizes the harm cowslip has caused to holly and bluebell, he's one of the first to help boxwood settle down into his new life in the wilderness, he shares valuable information on how to make the honeycomb as comfortable as possible, and look at how happy he is when the others think of him as good enough to come on that little negotiation mission!!! i just really like that with enough time the team has fully accepted strawberry as a member, he put in a lot of work to make it up to them!
i also adore that bit where he accidentally did the lil dance in front of holly and hazel out of habit, he was so embarrassed lol ... strawberry more like cuteberry
I love Watership Down!! Making designs for the silly rabbits of depression!! Fiver has has sectoral heterochromia <3
They/them Hazel…I’m not using my wokeness to my full potential It seems
Tbh, it would also have been interesting if the where to make Dandelion, Silver, or even Fiver female. For reasons mentioned in the previous post.
Dandelion is a fun choice. She’s surely the friend who likes to role-play and larp!
We don’t really have many narrator Does. Vilthuril tells a story, sort of, but it’s to her kits, not to everyone in general.
(Heh, if I make my Doe Speedwell, she’d count as one, too.)
I’ve read a couple of people who find it interesting to have a Doe Silver. Waiter waiter more Owsla girls who are fighters, please!
About Fiver, oh. That’s a bolder one; I wonder how that could work out. It’s an interesting concept to think about
When reading the “Blessing Of El-Ahrairah.” It’s hard for me to feel any sort of remorse for the Prince and his people, because at the end of the day he really got what he deserved. People tend to overlook how much of an ASSHOLE this guy ways, and yeah most deities are like that but man-. . .I love that fact that when he truly loses everything, his Owsla Captain, his mates. . .His home, Is when he’s finally humbled. Like THATS when I feel like his redemption ark starts and ends, contracts to him getting patched up by his good ol’ pal Frith with stardust and moonbeams!! Like yes I love me a good “God/Demi-God learning how to be more humble and forgiving and such and such.” from gluttonous, greedy, prideful lil’ scamp to a one finally worthy of the title Frith has given him. Is this Prince Rabbit slander? A lil’ bit yeah, Is this also yearner Rabscuttle propaganda? Also yes, I know Princey-boy was tryna subtlety Invite him Into his polycue for years. LMAO! -🌘
Don't worry, believe it or not, I'm not really a fan of El-ahrairah as a character either. Though it's mostly just me—I'm generally not a fan of “trickster” types, especially when they come across as selfish characters who screw others over just for the sake of it. El-ahrairah isn't exactly that kind of character either, but meh. I agree that I really love Rabscuttle—he’s the most level-headed, yet still loyal and genuinely concerned for the well-being of his boss and his people <3.
Yeah, I’ve read a lot of ridiculous opinions labeling Frith as “evil” for condemning El-ahrairah to a life of “suffering” like that, when you ignore the fact that the guy was openly starving literally every other animal in the world to death for his own sense of “entitlement” (hey, it works as a good parallel to how invasive species actually are). Besides, come on, Frith is perhaps one of the kindest and coolest fictional deities I’ve ever seen (I’ve borrowed a bit from him for a character in my original project non animal xf related)—even though he had “punished” El-ahrairah, he still felt kindness toward him, granting him all those attributes and the promise that he and his people would never truly die. The final line isn’t just a challenge; it’s more of a condition. The problem is that the first part of it is usually cut off: “El-ahrairah, your people cannot rule the world, because I have not willed it so.” If it feels more “empathetic,” it’s because we usually see it from the perspective of the “persecuted” rabbits.
And we don’t think beyond what the other animals in the story are feeling. All of them were blessed, and besides, the rabbits weren’t the only animals that became prey. It’s just that the story is meant to be about the rabbits.
Although it still leaves the question of whether the “Elil” (whether they believe Frith exists, or see him differently, or consider him a different deity altogether) resent the fact that they were turned into the executioners of those who were once their friends?
And of course, in the end, it makes it clear that despite everything, Frith was still a friend to El-ahrairah and didn’t wish him harm. He’s guided by the common good; all animals are important to him.
The fact that El-ahrairah isn’t exactly perfect and can grow by facing things over which he has no control is great. It serves as a lesson even for the characters.

The Other Animals: “Hey El-Ahrairah, my species and kingdom Is kind of starving to death, could you maybe stop that seeing as we’re all suppose to be friends? :(
The Fraudulent El-Ahrairah:
How would you envision a hypothetical Watership Down musical?
I WOULD SO MUCH LOVE A WATERSHIP DOWN MUSICAL!!
Apparently there is one, but there is no full recording of it, just a trailer and some reviews </3
It would probably have to be anthro, but that could totally work given things like the Lion King stage musical exist.
Divided into two parts, with part 1 ending when Hazel is shot.
Bluebell is for sure there. He can have a special musical motif for his jokes. Actually his and Hazel's silly little couplets would work SO well in a musical. Honestly I think Hawkbit, Acorn, Speedwell would all have to be there to give the heather scene more oomph, unless it's changed to Hawkbit and Dandelion like in the TV series. Honestly I would want everyone there but idk how practical that would be on stage.
No pairings mentioned bc they aren't important to the book and we don't have time for all that.
And--this is super important--there are songs for ALL FIVE El-ahrairah stories.
The main songs would be:
Fiver's "field of blood" vision, with all his words being super dramatic and iconic and urgent, and Hazel answering in a jarringly calm way because he can't see the blood. Warning the Threarah and leaving Sandleford, culminating in Bigwig's fight with Holly. "Frith's Blessing" song. River crossing song "There's a Dog Loose in the Woods." The argument in the heather (this could be a banger actually, I think argument songs in musicals are usually pretty fun). Cowslip's warren seeming lovely but weird, but with Fiver's suspicions building. "The King's Lettuce" directly paired and contrasting with Silverweed's poem. Fiver's argument with Hazel and Bigwig + Bigwig in the snare. Finding Watership Down, short and peaceful, kind of a break from the drama. Drama ramps right back up with Holly's tale about Sandleford. "The Trial of El-ahrairah." Kehaar song, starting with the rabbits meeting him and basically turning into a duet between him and Bigwig because they are BROS FOREVER!! Holly's failed embassy to Efrafa, actively shown like in the miniseries, so that not everything Holly does is just recounting things that happened, basically an "Efrafa really sucks" intro. A song for the raid on Nuthanger Farm, starting as the argument between Hazel and Fiver and reprising the tune from their argument at Cowslip's warren, Hazel overconfidently leading the raid until he is shot.
Intermission.
A song for Fiver's vision sequence finding Hazel, not exactly Bright Eyes bc copyright + I feel like that song fits Silverweed much more than Hazel and Fiver, but has some nods to it. An intro including the decision to go back to Efrafa leading into "El-ahrairah and the Black Rabbit of Inlé." Bigwig's infiltration, him meeting Woundwort and Chervil leading into a reprise of the Efrafa really sucks song and HYZENTHLAY SINGING A SONG IN AN ANALOGUE TO HER POEM SCENE!!! Escape planning song (Bigwig & Hyzenthlay duet). Epic escape song. Protags settling down leading into "Rowsby Woof and the Fairy Wogdog." Woundwort villain song about hunting them down; pretty much follows the "Great Patrol" chapter, starting as an argument at the Council meeting and building to the invasion. Hazel's attempted negotiation with Woundwort (I just know I would love this song so much, I love the scene in every version, damn you 1999 for not having it) building to the start of the attack. Fiver's vision as a "There's a Dog Loose in the Woods" reprise, combined with various elements from the Rowsby Woof song. The dog plan and Bigwig-Woundwort fight is one long song with both parts of the plan taking place simultaneously on opposite sides of the stage and they alternate verses, sometimes overlapping to show urgency. (Hyzenthlay is one of the runners like in the film bc Adams truly did not let her do anything in the finale.) Hazel comes home song. Honestly I can take or leave a Hazel's death song, it's cool seeing him join El-ahrairah's Owsla but it would also be cool to end on a story like in Chapter 50 or the miniseries.
What's anyone think? I feel like a lot of this is kinda just vaguely rehashing the plot instead of envisioning anything particular rip--
GOD YES, the outfit designs should 100% lean Into moreover The Lion King Musical, basically as In you can clearly tell what animals their suppose to be representing (Ears tails, you get It.) while also keeping It subtle-!! THAT AND FOR CLOTHING I NEED THEM TO WEAR MILITARISTIC UNIFORMS, MORE BLUNTLY WW2 ENGLAND UNIFORMS, but at the same time throwing In some creative elements, like having certain warrens have Identifying flags to represent their home and patches to Identify where your from, or to show what rank you are In the Owsla-!! Captain, officer etc. THAT AND I NEED EFRAFA TO SUBTLY HAVE NAZI GERMANY UNDERTONES NOT JUST WITH THE OUTFIT BUT EFRAFA AS A WHOLE AS WELL. I just really need a LOT of war/military subtext and undertones for a Watership Down Play/Musical. Also Cowslips Warren needs to give the vibes of the guys from Midsommar, not only outfit wise but personality wise as well, all fake smiles and eerier stares.
UGH the costumes would be so fun, this is making me want to design anthro versions of the rabbits...
I found this fanart a while ago on Pinterest that basically Is a Insight of what I want the outfits and costumes to look like, GOD I WISH I KNEW WHO DREW THESE, but yeah, while I do still want a lot of military Inspired outfits and designs these are a second contender-!! That and I think only the ones who were or still are In the Owsla should wear uniforms and stuff like that, think Silver and Holly etc etc:

OKAY YA’LL KNOW I HATE TO PIT TWO BADDIES AGAINST EACH OTHER, AND DON’T JUMP ME FOR THIS BOTH WE’RE BEAUTIFUL BUT LIKE-. . .
Snow-Crested Shrines > OTNWAS
(I haven’t gotten the chance to read Soul Of A Druid, like I know they’re the big three of the HiJack Fic fandom and I really wanna know which Is my favorite.)
Rewatching the 1999 Watership Down cartoon and I can’t help but complain a lil’ about how Captain Holly pretty much gets replaced with Captain Broom relevance and character wise, ITS EXACTLY LIKE IN THE MARIO MOVIE WHEN THEY REPLACE TOADSWORTH WITH SOME RANDOM ADVISOR TOAD, like I swear nothing would change If they added Holly In more episodes, (That and I miss my boy Silver to much…I LOVE THE SHOW ITS A TOP ADAPTATION FOR ME but man does the group feel small without some of my favorites, oh silver come home.)
