so the wpbl's inaugural season will be broadcast on espn in the us which, to be clear, is a huge fucking deal, however this pretty much nukes the (us-based, no word as of yet for international viewers) youtube stream which i think is a huge misstep. not only had the league itself advertised the youtube stream but that has been a huge part of word of mouth, so to lose that just two days before the season opens is such a fumble. while i can see the importance of it, both as a much needed monetary infusion and a vote of confidence from the greater sporting establishment, i think at the ground level it misunderstands who their target audience is/should be and alienates such a large swath of potential fans/makes it that much harder for the fans who were ready to be all in. for any start-up league getting as many eyes as possible is so crucial, especially for something as historic as this, and the fan relationships they need to be building from day one are not the people who are going to pay $30 a month to access via espn, which a huge community of sports fans (especially baseball fans!) already hate. i could see a deal to air the postseason games, but tying their regular season solely to espn was unnecessary, especially when we have seen an successful alternative model through the pwhl's first few seasons
