Viva Las Ocupadas, June 2014
Being in Las Vegas for work is certainly a level of limbo known since Dante’s time. Having an agenda and things to do while a world at leisure streams past you with yard glasses, neon shorts, bachelorette sashes… June was euphoria, but there was so much to do. So what’s one to do, but keep pushing through.

"Carlos", April 2014
Nathan and I spent a weekend watching "Carlos", an excellent miniseries on the carnage that Ilich Ramírez Sánchez brought for "the cause" during the 70's and 80's. The Britrock/punk/new-wave soundtrack really made the show, so I compiled it here as a bonus playlist for April. Make love not bombs, friends.
Mellow Gold, Mar 2014
This month was all about friends, both old and new. There was a week spent in Austin, where I was a stranger but treated like family. After, the greater family of Australians filled every San Francisco day, becoming all the more numerous as winter finally yielded to t-shirt weather.
I wanted this playlist to be about fun, but also being able to relax with loved ones. A warming album, for listening to on long, solo flights across America, when everything seems too far to touch.

Like that little dog Hiro, I seemed to spend my February skittering from one friend or fancy to the next. Every night there were Korean BBQs in Sydney, Australia or elegant seafood dinners in Wellington, NZ. I spent the month indulged in all ways, but especially by company - by the time Heather joined me in Rotorua, I was equally tired from travel and thrilled for the next big thing. Here’s to a month of nipping at every ankle, of chasing every lead.

The beginning of 2014 was a 3-nation mezcla. From an auspicious start in Mexico City, I found that hitchhiking is easy in Tulum, a week in San Francisco is not long enough to unpack your bags, Hawaii is happiness and well, Sydney - you have my heart again. Happy horse year, everyone!

January’s trip to Hawaii deserved its own playlist and so the dusty crates of Rdio delivered. In a fit of post-Carribean madness, I pulled together over 3 1/2hrs of “tropical music”, which served me well on the flight from San Francisco to Honolulu. In all senses, shuffle it. Shuffle it well.

Warming up in cold weather. After finishing a speaking tour in Boston (brr!), I skipped from SF to Mexico. From chowder and down, to mucho suerte on the Yucatan peninsula, life was good.
Under normal circumstances, I would have made this two playlists. But the contrast in my listening habits from both sides of the US, to both sides of the border was too much fun to leave unacknowledged.

Following the September highs, October was a mixed month. Wanderlust called, I replied - and so I roamed to London, Barcelona and Brussels. June was blitz - on one end, there was the lightness of a Vegas trip, a husband rocking it at WWDC and weekends in the sun. On the other, there was Prop 8, followed by Pride Weekend - a reminder that love is worth fighting for and that beauty can be found in the shadows. It's a wonderous day outside - make it happen.

‘Conference Season’ has just begun in sunny San Francisco, which, for the long-oppressed tech folks of this city, is when we sit indoors for hours on end with other pale people. Meanwhile, the general populace tries to get as close to naked as both municipal codes and strong northerlies allow.
As you may know, I’m a music nerd that loves nerd music. The glitchier, the better. I produce playlists en masse within my beloved Rdio, largely for my private pleasure. However, in tribute to my fellow keyboard comrades, who are currently rehearsing their excitement for the redacted, I present…
Without wanting to write Moby-like liner notes, many of the references to ‘work’ are with irony. Death from Above’s refrain, “Woman friend take me to your bedroom, let me show you how I work” is tragicomic in the context of the late-night patch submissions and extended sprints leading up to I/O, WWDC et al. You bring your laptop, I’ll get cozy with a nice book.
The energy behind this one came from a Googler and thus the intentionally-hokey references to dead cellphones, glass and cars. Nonetheless, I feel that anyone with a little love for electro-clash can get into this groove. So, it’s over to you - give it a spin.

A week in Portland and it's under your skin forever. Each song is its people, our house in Hawthorne, the heavy hearts. This playlist is sloppy, unfinished - but like the jumble of rice, beans and BBQ dished up from The Whole Bowl, it's pretty special for that reason.
