Changing the tint and temperature.
This was inspired by an image transfer ‘fail’ I tried to image transfer a sheet of newspaper on one of my pages in my sketchbook and it didn’t really work when I started to rub it off with water. I then tried to make the most of it and image transfer the royal mile but I ended up liking how it looked when I had just placed it on. I liked how chaotic the background looks. I then decided to make this again but taking my time and getting the small details of the royal mile and thought it would have been cool if I kept both sides of paper. I used a view finder to see if I could get an interesting looking piece out of it. I scanned it in and tried ‘photoshopping’ it. Love the outcome.
*4 week drawing and painting* Different type of collage. I firstly painted the Edinburgh castle with acrylics, then cut a stencil of the royal mile out and used acetate to layer over ( so you can clearly see through it) this was inspired by Minty Sainsbury’s pencil drawing that I’ve also attached. I wanted to add more layers so I used another piece of acetate and drew a building using the continuous line idea. Really like the outcome.
*4 week drawing and painting* More experiments :) first two kinda inspired by Andy Warhol, 3rd one reminds me of destruction
*4 week drawing and painting* Scanned a few pieces of my work and started experimenting with them using editing apps I already had in my phone. I really love how this turned out. Total accidental but v interesting! Reminds me of that lesson we had near the start of course where we had to ‘destroy’ our work
4 week drawing and painting. Inspired by last post
*4 week drawing and painting* Making prepared surfaces inspired by my first experiment with screen printing and college. Going to screen print over the buildings.
After printing all of my scenes from Lino, I scanned the prints and started working on photoshop to perfect them and fix all the squint lines
I didn’t have Lino at that moment so I experimented with wood instead. Didn’t work too well but I do like the wood like effect
Today The Edinburgh Printmakers had an open day on where they had various different taster workshops, so a fellow student, @rafia-mfad , and myself decided to go along and see what was available for us to try.
We started off with a screen printing workshop, I’d always wanted to try screen printing but never had the chance, and I really enjoyed it! I spent a bit too much time thinking about what to draw instead of just doing it so my final result isn’t exactly what I had in mind but nevertheless I had fun with it.
Secondly we did a plate lithography workshop. We started off with an A5 sheet of acetate and we had different pictures we could use for collage and some fine liner pens with which we could add more details. The images were then exposed onto a metal plate covered with a light-sensitive emulsion coating using a UV light exposure machine. The next step was to develop the exposed plate using an alkaline solution called ‘Neat Posidev’. We then applied ‘Gum Arabic’ to the developed plates, this is used to attract water to certain areas which ensures the oil based ink doesn’t stick in those areas. We had to use a roller to apply oil based ink to our images and keep the images wet using a sponge and clean water. Lastly the images were put through a motorised press and we finally had our prints. I found this workshop to be my favourite because I’ve never done anything like it before and I’m happy with how my print turned out.
Our final workshop of the day was a Drypoint workshop. Beginning with a plain piece of paper we quickly sketched out our ideas. We the placed a sheet of acetate on top of our drawing and used a drypoint needle to traced/scratch our design into the acetate. We covered out design in ink, cleared off the excess and put it through a motorised press. I’m happy with how this final print turned out, but I wish I’d had a little more time to polish my design.
Overall I had a really enjoyable day, it’s made me want to go back and see what courses they have on offer in the future.

I really enjoyed this task! We were to create 12 quick 5 minute studies from the still life in front of us, using different shades/ tones of greys.
Only rules were not to mix black and white to get grey but instead mixing colours that cancelled each other out on the colour wheel! (Mines however turned out looking like coffee and cream colours) My favourite studies from this task were the 4 I have posted above! I really like the first one I posted where I used my finger to paint, and the third one where I used a pencil to scratch off the paint. They both turned out to look really interesting. I would love to another task similar to this.
I really did not like this piece I made because I thought it was a little too chaotic and messy so I made a view finder to try and find smaller pieces within it and it turned out to look really cool and abstract
