Many educational robots tend to be complex and expensive, or simple and cheap. Where’s the middle ground for students who want to build sophisticated things, but don’t want to pay a fortune just to get started? iRobot thinks it can reach that happy balance with its new Create 2 robot. It’s effectively a Roomba 600 series vacuum turned into a hacker’s paradise. Instead of the usual cleaning equipment, you’ll find easily accessible, clearly marked spaces that practically beg for add-on hardware (like cameras and arms) and cosmetic modifications. It’s the foundation for a robotics project rather than a fully accessorized (and therefore costly) machine, as CEO Colin Angle tells us. You will get many of the tools you need to get cracking, though, including a programming framework, example instructions and 3D printing files for extra parts. So long as you can write code and plug in through USB, you can turn the robot into a Bluetooth-controlled DJ, a miniature security guard or whatever else your budget and skills allow.

Facebook gave its gender non-conforming users a better way to express themselves early in the year, and now it’s Google’s turn. An update to Google+ rolling out over the next few days will let you type in a custom gender for your social networking profile instead of having to settle for “other” — you won’t have to constantly explain yourself just because you don’t fit into the male/female binary. You can also choose a pronoun, and it’s still possible to limit who sees your gender. This is a small tweak to the code, but it should make a big difference if you haven’t been comfortable with your G+ identity so far.

You probably didn’t shed too many tears when Apple yanked Bose products from its stores, but less variety in audio gear is rarely a good thing. It sounds like the two companies can’t stay mad at each other for very long, however — a source for 9to5Mac has leaked retail data that reportedly shows Bose gear returning to Apple’s shops in the near future. We’ve reached out to Apple to verify whether or not that’s the case. A truce on the shopping front would make sense, though. While Apple’s Beats label and Bose are fierce competitors, the Bose name remains a big draw for customers. Apple may not want to forgo all that potential profit, even if some of it goes to an arch-rival.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Intel is a bit obsessed with the Internet of Things (IoT). Connected gadgets were all over Intel’s booth at the last CES, and it’s one of the fastest growing portions of the company’s business. The chip giant also kicked off an IoT consortium together with Samsung, Dell, and others earlier this year. Now, Intel is taking another major step in this arena with the launch of its IoT Platform, which it says will help companies to more easily test, deploy, and secure smart devices. Everything the company is doing is a direct response to Qualcomm, which stole the mobile chip market from Intel and is already well-poised to take on IoT with the AllSeen Alliance and AllJoyn standard, both of which aim to unify the fractured IoT market. But it seems Intel has learned the dangers of being late to a potentially lucrative new market (even if it did so the hard way).

The US may never have used its microwave pain gun in combat, but that isn’t stopping China from exploring the concept of non-lethal force. Local manufacturer Poly has unveiled the WB-1, a millimeter-wave weapon that heats the water under your skin (much like the US’ Active Denial System) to deliver intense agony without injury. It currently works at a relatively short range of about 262 feet, but extra power can bump that up to 0.6 miles — if you know where to shoot, you could cause misery from afar. It’s reportedly meant to be used on the high seas, where it could enforce China’s territorial claims without the need to capture or destroy wayward vessels.

Wonder how Uber’s week could get worse? Today the district attorneys for Los Angeles and San Francisco announced they’re following through on their threat to sue the company, and that they have reached a settlement with its competitor Lyft. According to the DAs (PDF), the lawsuit against Uber is because of “false and misleading statements to consumers.” Specifically they take issue with the quality of the background checks Uber claims it uses on drivers and its $1 “Safe Rides” fee, a failure to have authorization to work at airports, and a practice of collecting but not passing on a $4 “airport fee toll” at SFO. SF DA George Gascón and LA DA Jackie Lacey are looking for an injunction to shut Uber’s service, penalties and restitution. For its part, Lyft agreed to stop making misleading statements about its background checks, seek authorization from any airports where it offers service and pay $500k in civil penalties. But hey, at least Uber has a Spotify tie-in.
Update: Uber spokesperson Eva Behrend said “We will continue to engage in discussions with the District Attorneys” and that Uber is a safe part of the transportation ecosystem. Check after the break for the full statement.

It turns out that people aren’t eating as many McHamburgers as they used to, which is a big problem if your business is all about slinging meat. So McDonald’s is hoping the novelty of its “Create Your Taste” ordering kiosks will lure some customers back in. The machines will be installed in 2,000 of its US outlets by the end of 2015. Instead of just walking up to the counter and ordering, users will be given the option to McCustomize their McMeal on a touchscreen. That includes everything from choosing chicken over beef, skipping the fatty mayo or picking sweet potato fries. Unfortunately, the privilege of being able to order a Big Mac minus special sauce on a ciabatta without getting the stink eye will cost you a premium, both in terms of prep time and cash.

With the exception of Sprint, the big four US carriers tend to cap your data on family plans. T-Mobile’s current offering only gives one person unfettered internet access, and even Sprint’s $100 per month promo asks you to split a finite amount of data with your kin — not so hot if Junior likes to marathon YouTube shows. Things are looking up, though. T-Mobile is launching a new (if “limited time”) Simple Choice family plan on December 10th that gives everyone unlimited data. The base plan starts at $100 per month for two lines that also include unlimited voice and text, plus 5GB of data tethering per line. That’s only half as many included lines as Sprint, but it’s a better value if you’re willing to pay extra to avoid limits. It beats the stuffing out of what you’ll get at AT&T and Verizon, at least. The two carriers respectively start at $130 and $100 for 10GB of data on two lines, and you’ll have to pay both for more capacity and more lines.

Despite The Pirate Bay’s efforts to escape an increasingly hostile environment in Sweden, the torrent site has been taken offline today. TorrentFreak and Swedish paper Dagens Nyheter report this is the result of a police raid as confirmed by Fredrick Ingblad, a special prosecutor for file sharing cases. The Rights Alliance is a local group backed by the music and film industries, and it took credit for the shutdown, claiming its criminal complaint lead to the action and called Pirate Bay an illegal commercial service. Only time will tell if this shutdown sticks, but TorrentFreak says it is affecting the site’s forum Suprbay, as well as Bayimg.com and Pastebay.net.

Showtime delivered its library of live and on-demand streaming to the Xbox 360 back in July, and now it’s doing the same for Microsoft’s latest console. Xbox One owners can now get in on the action too, as Homeland, Dexter, Californication and more are available via Showtime Anytime. As you might expect, the app plays nice with Kinect, allowing you to browse the lineup with voice and gesture controls rather than a controller or remote. It’ll also let you pin whatever your current obsession is to your home screen for easy access. If you’re paying for a cable subscription, access to Showtime Anytime on the console is available at no additional charge.

iRobot trots out Looj 330 gutter-cleaning robot, three entry-level Roombas (video)
With Roomba being the household name that it is, it can be easy to forget that iRobot also makes robots of the outdoor persuasion. In fact, though, the company’s been selling its Looj gutter-cleaning bots for five years now, occasionally treating us to demos involving leaves, dirt and fake roofs. Today the company announced the third-generation model, the Looj 330, which has been completely re-tooled to add a four-stage auger, multiple speed settings, an automated “Clean” mode and a lithium-ion battery. It’s also a bit more compact this time around, increasing the likelihood it’ll fit your gutter.
Meanwhile, for those of you who can’t bring yourselves to spend $700 on a robotic vacuum cleaner, iRobot is adding some entry-level models to its Roomba lineup: the 620, 630 and 650. Though these cost about half the price of the flagship offerings, they actually feature many of the same technologies, including iAdapt, the sensor arrangement that allows Roomba to crisscross the floor like it does. Here, though, the cosmetic design is different, and you also won’t find bells and whistles like capacitive touchscreens or fine Hepa filters. What’s more, these guys only use acoustic sensors to detect debris, whereas the pricier models add optical sensors to pick up on lighter particles, like fuzz.
All of these products are available now, with the Looj 330 going for $299 and the Roomba 600 series starting at $330. Not in the market for a cleaning bot? You can at least get a vicarious thrill out of our Luge hands-on video, embedded after the break for your viewing pleasure. And yes, those are Goldfish and m&m’s flying out of that gutter. It rains snack food here in New York City.

iRobot launches new indoor and outdoor home robots iRobot Looj® gutter cleaning robot and iRobot Roomba® 600 Series vacuum cleaning robots released with new technologies and design
BEDFORD, Mass. – August 14, 2012 — iRobot Corp. (NASDAQ: IRBT), a leader in delivering robotic technology-based solutions, today announced the launch of a new iRobot Looj® gutter cleaning robot and new iRobot Roomba® 600 Series vacuum cleaning robots.
Looj 330 takes a dangerous job and does it for you, using a high-velocity, four-stage auger to blast away leaves, dirt and clogs while brushing gutters clean. The new entry-level Roomba 600 Series robots, which complement the top-of-the-line 700 Series robots, offer the most up-to-date cleaning system and incorporate optimized airflow and an improved brush design for more thorough and effective cleaning. Roomba 600 Series will replace the Roomba 500 Series in iRobot’s dry floor care line-up in most regions worldwide.
“iRobot has sold more than 8 million home robots worldwide, by focusing on cleaning performance and innovation across the company’s portfolio of home robots,” said Jeff Beck, chief operating officer of iRobot Corporation. “Regardless of whether our robots are washing or vacuuming floors, cleaning gutters or the pool, our global customers want high quality products with state-of-the-art technology that perform a single task exceptionally well. The Looj 330 and Roomba 600 Series are the result of combining innovative research and customer feedback in our development process.”
The releases of the Looj 330 and Roomba 600 Series robots underscore the growing global acceptance of and demand for practical robots, particularly for performing automated home maintenance tasks.
The iRobot Looj 330: Cleans gutters on its own at the press of a button. Enhanced cleaning performance. Smarter operational features. Looj blasts away leaves, dirt and clogs while brushing gutters clean. Featuring a high-velocity, four-stage auger, Looj travels down your gutter on its own, sensing and adapting to debris to provide the most effective cleaning.
What’s new: – A four-stage auger spins at 500 RPM to blast away leaves, dirt and clogs. – In CLEAN mode, Looj automatically senses and adapts to debris, providing the most effective cleaning. – A 7.2V Lithium-ion battery provides superior performance for a longer time. – Multiple speeds let you spend more time clearing away tough clogs. – A scraper boosts cleaning performance and clears a path for the robot. – A lower profile design enables Looj to fit in more gutters. – An increased communications range – up to 50-feet – between the robot and remote control handle allows Looj to clean longer stretches of gutter without having to move the ladder. – Interchangeable auger flaps allow for greater performance. – Cleans up to a 30-foot section of gutter in 5 minutes on average. – Cleans 200 linear feet per battery charge on average.
Additional Looj 330 features: – Detachable carrying handle doubles as the wireless remote control. – Travels under gutter straps and over downspout holes. – Easy to clean with a hose. – Waterproof in up to 8 inches of water. – Prevents overreaching and repeated trips up and down the ladder.
The iRobot Roomba 600 Series: A simple cleaning experience from beginning to end. Roomba uses a patented three-stage cleaning system to vacuum carpets, tile, laminate and hardwood floors. AeroVacTM Technology and a new brush design maximize cleaning results, with less hair remaining tangled on bristles and a more evenly filled bin. Roomba 600 Series robots are designed to more effectively handle hair, pet fur, lint, carpet fuzz and other fibers than previous generation robots.
What’s new: – AeroVac Technology optimizes airflow so the bin fills evenly and needs to be emptied less often. – The improved brush design and optimized airflow remove more hair from the robot’s brushes, providing more thorough cleaning and reduced maintenance. – The 600 Series has new styling with a splash of color. Additional Roomba 600 Series features: – Onboard scheduling allows you to preset up to seven times per week for Roomba to clean when it’s most convenient for you. (Model 650 and higher.) – Using iAdapt® Responsive Cleaning Technology, iRobot’s advanced proprietary system of software and sensors, Roomba vacuums every section of your floor multiple times for a comprehensive cleaning. – With Dirt DetectTM, Roomba uses an acoustic sensor to help find dirtier areas and spends more time cleaning them. – Roomba automatically docks and recharges on its Home Base® when it finishes vacuuming or when the battery is running low. – A Virtual Wall® barrier can be used to create an invisible barrier that Roomba won’t cross, keeping the robot in the rooms you want to clean and out of the ones you don’t.
The iRobot Looj 330 gutter cleaning robot is available in North America at www.irobot.com for $299.
The iRobot Roomba 600 Series is available globally online at www.irobot.com and from select retailers. Roomba 600 Series pricing starts at $329.99.

Robovie the talking robot gets schooled by elementary students
Higashihikari elementary school welcomed a robot through its doors this week. A new model Robovie will join the Japanese school’s students for classes over 14 months, aiming to gain sentience strike up interactions with multiple people — and learn from it. The Robovie’s conversation level is apparently equal to a five-year-old child, although it’s been augmented with all the know-how of a fifth-grade science textbook and preloaded with 119 facial photos and voiceprints of teachers and students. It’s the first long-term project for the International Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute’s 1.2-meter bot, with the scientists reckoning that the school environment should offer its robot major input.

T-Mobile's new family plan gives everyone unlimited data
There’s a thriftier option, too. T-Mobile is offering a promo plan that gives four people 10GB of data (2.5GB each) from December 10th through 2015. It’s not quite as sweet a deal as Sprint’s and will drop everyone down to 1GB of LTE data when 2016 rolls around, but the UnCarrier is counting on its usual perks, like unlimited basic roaming, to seal the deal. The new unlimited plan looks more tempting, though — it’ll cost significantly more, but it’s smarter if you know one or more of your family members likes to gobble up bandwidth.

iRobot's newest machine is made for student hackers
As you might imagine, stripping down a floor-roaming automaton does wonders for its price. Where a basic Roomba 630 costs $350, the iRobot Create 2 is launching today for $200. That’s inexpensive enough that it should still be relatively affordable even after you’ve bought the gear needed to make your dream device. It’s definitely not meant for younger kids, but it could be an ideal blank slate for college and high school students that need (or want) to learn programming by solving real-world problems.

McDonald's is bringing touchscreen ordering to the US
It turns out that people aren’t eating as many McHamburgers as they used to, which is a big problem if your business is all about slinging meat.
But don’t fret for the underpaid cashiers — they’ll now be underpaid pseudo waiters that deliver your food to your table (like a real restaurant). It’s hoped that this blending of not-so-fast food, technology and choice will be enough to win back younger, more health-conscious customers and rouse the company out of its slump. As Bob Nibeel, a McDonald’s franchise owner told USA Today (with a twinge of sadness in his voice), “most millennials would rather deal with a computer, iPad, iPhone than actually have interaction with another human being.” Leave it to McDonald’s to offer the most depressing of observations about our society.

LA and San Francisco sue Uber, but settle with Lyft for $500k
Wonder how Uber’s week could get worse? Today the district attorneys for Los Angeles and San Francisco announced they’re following through on their threat to sue the company, and that they have reached a settlement with its competitor Lyft. According to the DAs (PDF), the lawsuit against Uber is because of “false and misleading statements to consumers.” Specifically they take issue with the quality of the background checks Uber claims it uses on drivers and it’s $1 “Safe Rides” fee, a failure to have authorization to work at airports, and a practice of collecting but not passing on a $4 “airport fee toll” at SFO.

New Post has been published on http://hostingcouponcodess.com/hbo-eyes-april-premiere-for-its-standalone-streaming-service/
HBO eyes April premiere for its standalone streaming service
Reports have been pretty consistent that HBO will offer a direct-to-consumer streaming option sometime next year. When that might land and what that might look like, however, have been subject to rampant (and usually unfounded) speculation. Today, at least a little more detail is trickling in. The company is currently planning to launch the service, in some capacity, in April alongside the premiere of season five of Game of Thrones. Though, that timeline is subject to the usual caveats about plans changing and all that jazz. Those plans were revealed in a memo (which you’ll find after the break) announcing plans to cancel its own streaming platform project “Maui” and license MLB Advanced’s much-lauded tech instead.
The decision to kill off the Maui project, which is headed up by Microsoft alum Otto Berkes, comes as competitors like Showtime are starting to breathe down HBO’s neck. According to Fortune, the company realized that Berkes “couldn’t pull it off.” After years of delays, high-profile outages during Game of Thrones and True Detective and a general lack of upgrades, the company simply decided to shift gears.
If HBO wants to maintain its lead in the streaming space and beat other networks to the market, it needed a proven platform it could quickly build upon. MLB Advanced’s streaming already powers offerings from the likes of the WWE and ESPN, so HBO believes it can make its April goal by turning to the established tech. This also means that HBO can focus more on its bread and butter — “good shit” — instead of dabbling in tech.
There are plenty of big questions left to be answered, however. What does this mean for the troubled HBO Go? How will cable companies react to one of its biggest attractions going it alone? And most importantly, how much is HBO going to charge? Seriously, I’m putting together my 2015 budget right now and need to know!
HBO executive management has made a decision to pursue an external solution for the product that was being built by the Maui team. This decision was not made lightly, and was based on an assessment of risk and scope of the product needed to meet HBO¹s short term business needs for April 2015. This was not a judgment of the team¹s work quality or deliverables but rather a bet that an existing streaming service could deliver the needed product faster and at lower risk than Maui.
This means that effective today the Maui project is cancelled. Canceling a project is unpleasant, especially when the target is in sight and tantalizingly close. Drew and I have often discussed the excellent work done by the team on Maui – The Maui team was hitting deliverables ahead of schedule and at a high level of quality. Maui’s timeframe caused us to make concessions both in scope and culture. We look forward to returning to teams defining scope, and consumer experiences without forced top down scheduling. The larger technology team now has three core missions. 1. Our top priority: Fully support the work needed to enable the external solution for April. To begin this work we have asked a small forward group to engage and assess with the external partner and get to a detailed statement of work as quickly as possible. Once that SoW is complete we will staff to meet our deliverables. 2. A large portion of Maui’s effort can be repurposed for HBO GO, a top priority for HBO. We will continue to make HBO GO the best global capable streaming service available. This means that we redouble and focus our efforts, first for the April timeframe with our scale and robustness goals for Game of Thrones, and second with our longer term plan to deploy Hurley, and a suite of Hadron clients as quickly as possible. We will also fold as much as possible of the good work done for Maui into HBO GO where we can. 3. We will continue our efforts around interactive and other future looking areas on a case by case basis the same way we do today. Maui was a way to get us into market faster with a less than perfect solution – the external partner will take that burden allowing us to focus on the forward looking technologies we are creating for HBO GO. Mark and Drew
Update: In the wake of HBO’s decision to kill his pet project, CTO Otto Berkes has resigned. The exec’s displeasure was barely masked in the memo he released announcing his resignation, in which he said, “HBO’s management decided to partner with a third party… This is a change in direction from what I planned with HBO and the approach will not utilize my overall capabilities.”

New Post has been published on http://hostingcouponcodess.com/dropboxs-carousel-app-now-frees-up-phone-storage-for-you/
Dropbox's Carousel app now frees up phone storage for you
Let’s say you’re about to shoot a video of your child’s first steps. You launch the camera app on your phone and you’re all set to hit record… but wait, what’s this? A message pops up on your phone that says there’s not enough available storage. Frantically, you head back to your camera roll, delete a bunch of photos you hope you won’t need and rush back to the camera app, praying that you made enough room to capture Junior’s momentous occasion. It’s a situation that’s all too familiar for those of us with limited space on our phones. Fortunately, however, there might be a solution to that, courtesy of a new feature arriving on Dropbox’s Carousel app starting today: the ability to free up space on your phone with just a single tap.
Released in April this year, Carousel is an app for both iOS and Android that not only organizes your Dropbox photos by date, time and event, it also automatically backs up any new photos you take on your phone. That’s good, but it didn’t quite resolve scenarios like the one above, where you have to manually delete photos from your camera roll to make room for more. Now, it does. When your phone’s storage approaches full capacity, Carousel will give you a notification. In the app, you’ll be given the option to delete all the photos on your phone that’s been backed up on Dropbox. Hit that button, and voilà, they’re gone instantly.
And don’t worry about accidentally removing a bunch of photos you haven’t backed up yet. “We added a lot of safe checks,” said Chris Lee, Dropbox’s head of product development for Carousel. “A unique identifier is created for each photo,” said Kat Busch, one of Carousel’s software engineers. “Our algorithm compares those numbers to what we’ve stored on our server, so that only those that are already backed up on Dropbox will be deleted.” Additionally, Lee tells us that if you’re not critically low on space, Carousel will leave the last 30 days of photos on your phone as a safety measure. A lot of third-party apps like Instagram and Facebook only use photos from your local camera roll, so this way you can still use those apps with your recently snapped pics. The feature to instantly delete backed up photos will be available in the Android update starting today and will be on iOS some time next week.
Another Carousel feature Dropbox is rolling out in the coming weeks is something called Flashback. When enabled, the app will surface interesting photos and videos that you took around the same time a year ago or several years ago. It’s sort of like Timehop, but it focuses more on personal photos. It uses Carousel’s internal algorithm that recognizes people’s faces, so there’s a high probability a photo of you and a friend or family member will pop up. Amusingly, Dropbox has set it so that Flashback will notify you of a photo on Thursdays — which is very fitting for that popular Throwback Thursday meme.
“Carousel is meant for people to get more out of Dropbox,” said Lee. “It’s our dedicated experience for photos and videos, and now, for reliving personal memories.” You can go ahead and get the Carousel app from both Android and iOS stores today, though you might not get the related feature updates until later.

New Post has been published on http://hostingcouponcodess.com/dutch-trains-get-lasers-to-zap-track-debris/
Dutch trains get lasers to zap track debris
You might not see leaves as hazards, but train operators would beg to differ — foilage on the tracks not only makes it harder for trains to stop, but messes with anti-collision signals. The greenery might not be much of a danger for much longer, however. Dutch Railways is testing a laser system that zaps leaves (and other organic material) before it reaches the wheels, keeping the tracks clean. You can already use water jets and sand gels to do this, but they have limited supplies and sometimes damage the rails. The lasers run so long as the train has power, and they actually help the metal by drying it and preventing leaves from sticking.
The technology’s readiness depends on conquering problems with vibrations, which can throw the laser off. The Dutch system (developed by Strukton Rail) turns the laser off when it’s going to miss the track. It’s also useful only at speeds under 50MPH, so you won’t see high-speed trains scrubbing the tracks in mid-trip. Still, even this limited implementation could be useful. Safer tracks not only protect passengers, but minimize the delays needed to clean the tracks. Eventually, you may never have to worry that autumn weather will sabotage your travel plans.

Android TV will be in Sony, Sharp and Philips TVs next year
Google isn’t giving up on TVs yet. While its new Android TV flavor of Android L will hit the streets in set-top boxes aimed at game consoles and media streamers, it announced that next year smart TVs from Sony (all of its 4K and smart TVs), Sharp and TP Vision/Philips will ship with the OS. It’s also working with some familiar TV providers overseas like LG U+ in Korea (not LG Electronics TVs, which are moving to webOS) and SFR in France, as well as the chipmakers that build the components for smart TVs and boxes as seen in the slide above. The difference from the original Google TV approach is that the company isn’t treating Android TV as an entirely separate platform from mobile, and everything needed to handle video from HDMI, TV tuners or IPTV receivers is now natively included in Android L. We’ll probably have to wait until CES 2015 to find out if it’s having any success convincing more TV manufacturers to join in (again), but these are a start.

Amazon Prime Instant Video begins streaming in 4K
Amazon just announced another benefit for folks with a Prime subscription: 4K video streaming. That’s right, Ultra HD content is now available via monthly membership through the Instant Video app or on compatible smart TVs. For now, the selection is a bit limited, but you can expect to enjoy Amazon Originals, BBC’s Orphan Black and a smattering of titles from Sony Pictures Entertainment in all of their 4K glory. Better video quality doesn’t come with an extra fee either, as the content will be lumped in with the rest of those Prime perks. Amazon’s a little tardy with the rollout, but hey, we can’t complain too much as it’s here in time to break in that shiny new TV Santa will deliver in a few weeks.
