This escalation didn't happen in a vacuum. It's the result of years of EU impunity toward Israel.
While violations continue, the EU keeps business as usual through its Association Agreement.
Accountability can't wait. Suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement. Now.
Re-reading volume 8 of Watatabe and it's so so important to me so, meta post: How Volume 8 Turns a New Leaf for Shiori's Feelings, and Her and Hinako's Relationship to Them (and How Miko is Unintentionally Hurting Them Both).
When Tsubaki asks Hinako if (like Miko) Shiori is her friend, Hinako blanches immediately.
Miko drags Hinako away from her before Hinako can answer - and, as she does, we see Shiori watching. By this point, there have already been plenty of moments in the manga where Miko has expressed her concern for Shiori and her attitude of setting herself up to be hurt further by Hinako/treasuring that pain. Especially with the fresh recollection of what Inugami Gyoubu warned her, Miko is worried that whatever Hinako will say (or not say!) will cause Shiori more emotional harm.
I don't think that Hinako would have said no. I don't think she would have said yes, either. I think at this point in the manga, Hinako simply hasn't given herself the time and space to interrogate her feelings for Shiori. Hinako didn't need to truly consider Shiori's feelings until their blood pact because, until then, Shiori was just a force of nature to her. Something that kills without personal agony or regret. I don't think Hinako could have answered if she sees Shiori as a friend, because this is the first time she's truly considering her capacity to be.
Miko sees this internal conflict and immediately identifies it as a source of harm for both of them. So she takes the question off the table. As mentioned before, we often see her exhibiting a kind of hypervigilance in cushioning Hinako's feelings, and now Shiori's too. But we also see, over and over, between coaxing her out to the summer festival to visiting her parents graves with her, Shiori has no desire to acquiesce to the easy way. And little by little, Shiori's pushing of these established boundaries is helping Hinako reacquaint herself with the world and begin to rediscover a sense of enjoyment and belonging. Unfortunately, Miko's unending desire to protect everyone is also her toxic trait: she's holding Hinako back from growing from that challenge and discomfort.
She's holding them back here too, by denying Hinako the challenge of interrogating what Shiori is to her, and what she wants Shiori to be to her.
But the question lingers in Hinako's mind. When they visit her parents graves together, Hinako takes a chance, spurred by Shiori's decision to cross the boundary that Miko had set out, and asks Shiori if her actions that day were for Hinako's benefit.
Shiori takes the opportunity to tease: deflecting as she always has done up until this point. But then she lets go and gives her her feelings raw and exposed. Yes, I did it all for you, Hinako. A world without you in it would be very lonely for me. She's giving herself a huge emotional vulnerability, the exact one that Miko was trying to protect them from: one of the nagging pain of unreturned love, of losing someone dear to you. But even if Hinako isn't ready to return these feelings yet, even if she doesn't know yet what her feelings truly are, she's at least able to receive Shiori's due to her vulnerability.
I don't think Hinako was expecting the weight of Shiori's feelings, and that's a burden she now has to carry. No secrets or pretense, Shiori has offered her everything without the expectation that Hinako can match that energy right now and, in turn, that will give Hinako the opportunity to examine their feelings for each other. Perhaps it is uncomfortable or painful, but it's a discomfort both of them deserve to be tackled head-on rather than buried.
