Peru withdraws its candidacy for the OAS General Secretariat

Due to not receiving the expected support from the member states of the Organization of American States (OAS), Peru has decided to withdraw the candidacy for the General Secretariat of the regional body from its ambassador Hugo de Zela.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Peruvian government steps down from the contest they argue was aimed at a path that preserves institutionality, dialogue and regional consensus, Telesur reported.

Zela's ambassador thanked President Martín Vizcarra and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, who since November 2019 had supported this campaign.

De Zela said that while campaigning for the OAS general secretary, he met with multiple heads of state, however, his proposals did not reach a majority that would allow him to continue in the race for office. Also, he stressed that he is withdrawing in favor of a proposal that has unity.

Although the viability of the Peruvian proposal is not reached, the Peruvian and Zela governments make it clear that they are at the disposal of reaching a consensus that is positive for the region and that strengthens the multilateral affairs of the OAS.
