Yes, but I don’t think that has to be true for everyone in every situation. My dad would get angry occasionally and trash (his) things. I was little so of course I was scared. I didn’t think he would hit me, but accidentally from careless anger and how much bigger he was.

Fastforward years later and now I get it. At least for the two of us, it’s not about hitting someone but unleashing this pent up anger. This pent up energy, type of adrenaline. Throwing something and hearing it smash is cathartic. And I immediately feel better afterwards. I don’t want to hit you, I just need a way to vent this excess energy my anger is causing me. Yeah you could be the source or the spark, but that doesn’t mean I want to direct this energy at you

It’s like if you were covered in pig shit and got up in my face. Just because you directly caused my nausea doesnt mean I would want to vomit on your face. But redirecting my vomit doesnt stop it from coming. My anger is like this uncontrollable vomiting. I don’t like it, I don’t want it, and I definitely don’t want to make you suffer through the nastiness but I still need some way to safely expel it. (Or a nicer metaphor would be like a steaming teakettle lol)

Of course this is just me and my dad’s experience. And we have a good relationship. I can definitely see your original statement being true in other relationships and other people tho!

I agree if they walk away, but my mother was the type to punch the wall while shouting and throwing things at me. She only never hit me because she didn't want to leave any evidence.

Sounds like you fall into the Category with your dad of Mistreatment isn't always Abuse.

And I say Mistreatment because a child should not be afraid of their parent ever.

But no parent is perfect.
