White people can have some idea of what racism is if they listen to people of color and pay attention to what they consider racist.

Ok, I have issue with both of these responses. I feel like I might get some flack for it but that's the way these things. First I'm just going to address the fact that there is DEFINITELY a history of oppression from privileged, whites and this is something that should never be forgotten or ignored. People of color have every right to be angry and aware.

This, however, does not excuse the perpetuation of racism. I am a white/hispanic female who honestly is mistaken for a full on white girl most of the time. That's completely fair, I am not exactly tanned all year long and I have a strong European lineage. Here is where the issues are probably going to ensue, let them. Not only white people can be discriminative/ racist. I know because I have been treated like absolute dirt by people who view me as "white scum". Even if I have done nothing to wrong them I have been belittled, screamed at and ignored because it was assumed that I was wronging someone. Examples include, but are not limited to, being verbally attacked for not knowing Spanish (in my workplace), having someone ask me about hiring and then looking to my coworker (a black woman) when I didn't give them the answer they wanted, and being told I didn't understand what it was like to have someone shoot racist slurs at me. And, it's happened in reverse, when someone realizes I'm Hispanic and then treat me like crap for that.

The point of this all? Yes there is a very dark history of oppression from whites but the color of your skin and your nationality does not stop you from being a racist/ discriminative asshole. Be aware of how you talk to people and handle yourself, yes there are awful people out there but you don't have to be one of them.

Just read this article about a Japanese company selling advertisements on women's thighs. The advertisements aren't permanent and the women apply to do the work. Really not sure whether I like the idea or don't. The women's activist in me is definitely concerned with the use of women's bodies as a marketing tool (again). At the same time, if a woman WANTS to use her body for work I'm not opposed to this either. Opinions?
