Tadanori Yokoo (横尾 忠則) is a fine artist, born in Nishiwaki, Japan. Yokoo works as graphic designer, illustrator, printmaker and painter. Yokoo’s work features a combination of psychdelia, and pastiche, that are iconic. Yokoo rose to become infamous, with his presentation of symbols linked to nationalism, and American Pop culture. Yokoo’s works were done in the brightest of colors, each screaming of an emotional state, that expresses with a dream-like, and adventurous tone. Panels, and collage separated material and space within the prints. Yokoo shows the intense mania of American Pop culture, psychedelic rage, romance, and vulgarity, presented a cultural discourse about reactions to a post war Japan, that have become significant as time pass. This visually delved into feelings often kept hidden, that concern themselves with the atrocious, erotic, and romantic. Yokoo did this with a sense of hysteria, and mystery of presenting tensions that echo into the present. Elements of Yokoo’s work, mirror with the approaches taken by lowbrow LA artists, cynical realists of Beijing, and outsider artists.
Yokoo founded the theater group Tenjō Sajiki, alongside Shūji Terayama. He collaborated with filmmaker Nagisa Oshima, as an actor.
