Listen and Fear Not
Hearing God is probably the part of me I question more than anything. I am by far not perfect and many times I take that colossal trip and land flat on my face and wonder, ‘ah God, what in the world was that?’
I recently had a far different experience. Why God picked me? Who knows. Our society loves to judge and I think most other people either were judging him or just plain ignoring him.
I have heard just about every line in the book when it comes to people asking for money. Most people don’t just toss their sin in your face, but that is exactly what this man did. He said, “I just got out of Jail today and I have nobody, can you help?”
My honest, gut reaction is most of the time 99.9 percent ‘no, I’m sorry...’and I keep walking and going about my business. This man’s particular plea stopped me dead in my tracks. Questions started popping in my head, the voice in my head was so clear, “take a moment, love on this man.”
Ok, I am a woman and a young man, just told me he just got out of jail and the words in my head are “take a moment and love on this man?” Crazy love...sometimes that is all it takes for God to change the one who knows they are the sinner and the one who thinks they are the saint.
I asked the young man, how long had he been in prison? He replied with his head down, “5 years.” I asked him if he had learned anything during his time? He said, “yes, many things” but the most important was that it was his intention to do right and not make the same mistakes he did in the past. I asked if he minded telling me what he was sentenced for? He said he did some “very bad things” that he was “guilty for and regretted greatly.” I asked if his crimes had involved drugs or sex crimes? He said, “no ma’am, they were gang related.”He was fearful that his gang was going to want him back now that he was out and he did not want to go back, he wanted to lead a life free from gangs.
The questions just kept lining up in my brain, my daughter had walked into the store because I believe she thought I was nuts, I kind of thought I was too. I then asked if he attended any church services or read any church books while he was in prison and he said yes. He said that was why he didn’t want to go back to his gang. I told him Jesus will give him what he needs if he leans on him every day. I also told him about the church I attend and he said isn’t that way over on the other side of town? I said we have several campuses but the main one was very close to where we were and there are many people just like him who attend our church.
He had a puzzled look on his face and then he asked me, “you have been in prison?”
I laughed, “No, not the kind of prison you are thinking of, but if you really think about it, every man and woman on this planet is in a prison of their own making until they surrender to Jesus and He sets them free FOREVER” The man smiled as he understood what I was saying to him.
I told him that I had to go to my daughter and I told him that I did not have a lot of money as I too was not working, but I would give him the cash I had in my wallet $2. I told him that God is watching him and that if he uses that $2 for anything other than good things, that God will know and that I hoped that our paths would cross again, either at church or in heaven and that I would keep him close to my mind and pray that the ex-gang member who was freed not only from Jail physically but I also believe spiritually would continue to walk on the straight and narrow.
So why all this detail? We need to be able to be stopped dead in our tracks to hear God’s still small voice, and not be in such a hurry, so we can obey.
Have you taken the moment to listen today? What is God whispering to you?
New day, new hope; never lose hope
Blog #2: Straight Talk on Anne with an E
Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlee were and still are two of my absolute favorite mini-series growing up. I can’t tell you how many times I watched them, over and over. I adored Anne, I identified with her competitive spirit, the way she never felt like she fit in because she considered herself not pretty; how she could somehow never see the beauty within herself. I think if everyone admits it we can all find a piece of ourselves in Anne.
So when I heard that Netflix was doing a remake to make it alive and real to this present day generation that is plagued with looks, beauty and having to fit a certain mold, I was initially excited and thrilled because the original did tackle bullying and not feeling like you “fit in” but never did the original try to “indoctrinate” a set of values that many still today don’t believe you are “born” with though it has certainly become popular and a way to get oneself noticed. By the standards laid out in the new Anne with an E, I might have seriously questioned my sexuality because I hate dresses, I love sports, I don’t like all the normal girly things. But I am not, I am straight as straight and I am married to my version of Gilbert. He lets me be me, he does not attempt to force me into a shell of what “A married woman should look like.”
The original Anne, challenged us to fight against what society expects of us. Back then women were just expected to get married and be eye candy on their husband’s arms. If you didn’t get married their must have been something inexplicably wrong with you. Anne broke the norm and we all love that she got Gilbert in the end.
The new Anne with E has chosen to focus more on bullying and not just the bullying of people who are different like Anne, but in particular those who are “different” or otherwise homosexual. There have been two seasons and yes, I have watched every episode so far. And I can’t tell you how sad I am to see this topic being so focused on. The show would still be just as good as the original (the gal they have found to play Anne is delightful), but Netflix is trying too hard to push an agenda.
I have a son who is 15 and has been bullied all the way through his Jr. High years. He is not an athlete and has never shown any interest in sports. I believe this is why he was bullied. I would love for him to see a show like Anne with and E but I don’t need nor do I want him thinking he is different because he might be a homosexual. He is a boy who simply has different interests than sports. He likes computers — everything about them. Just because he can’t play sports well does that make him gay? No. He had his first girlfriend and she broke his heart. He has grown to 6’2 over this summer and even though I don’t think he really wants to, he is going to try out for the basketball team. He is tired of being made fun of because he is awkward and different than most boys. But by no way does that make him a homosexual as the agenda of Anne with an E would suggest.
My son is much like Anne of the original series. He has so many insecurities (he thinks he is ugly - thank you world for forcing a viewpoint that boys look only good with a ripped six pack) and he is trying so hard to navigate the treacherous waters of this world. The sad part is today’s world is trying to tell him how to think instead of letting him think for himself.
I don’t hate anyone who has made choices to live a homosexual lifestyle. I have friends who live this way. What bothers me is when others who live this way expect me to give up my right to think and believe the way I do. We all have freedom of speech — even Netflix in warping a classic like Anne of Green Gables. But in this warping I am reminded of the following scripture to end with:
1 Peter 5:8-11 NIV
[8] Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. [9] Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. [10] And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. [11] To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Some days it takes everything you got to just hang on! Trust me, God is right there with you!
As for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more.
Psalm 71:14 (NIV)
Simple truths to repeat when you’re in a spiritual battle:
God’s got this
The Lord fights for me
Jesus loves me
Not today satan
I am a child of God
He is able
It is finished
His Grace is sufficient
Joy comes in the morning
I am not alone
I am fearfully & wonderfully made
Fear has no grip on me
Christ is enough for me
He has overcome the world
I am a new creation in Christ
Jesus conquered the grave
Sin doesn’t define me, Christ does
Be still & know
God is good

Straight Talk Day #1
Everyone is thinking they have great ideas for a blog. And what almost all those bloggers have in common is they think they are important enough for people to pay attention to. I am going to be the exception to this rule. If someone out there reads this and likes it, great - it is no big deal to me. In fact, In this first blog I would expect that most people will send me hate mail, tell me what a horrible person I am, get this, I don’t care about that either. All I care about is spreading the truth that God places on my heart. I’m tired of living where if we feel lead to share a thought or to pray or even harder, challenge the lukewarm beliefs of co-workers that it can cause us to be laid off or fired. So here are my bullet points:
* Although not 100% sure, I got laid off from the best job ever based on a lie. — I did not take the hush money. I stood on my principles.
* After much prayer, I believe I was laid off because I lived out my faith. I was never perfect, but when I felt lead, I would bring Jesus, or prayer into the matter.
* Here is where I will lose many, I voted for Trump and despite his inability to keep His mouth shut sometimes, I think he is doing a good job. (Expecting hate mail, but let me remind you a few words “He who is without sin cast the first stone.”) I don’t care about what Trump (or you reading this) may or may not have done in the past. We ALL will stand before God and be judged by what we have or have not done. I would rather worry about the log in my own eye before I worry about the speck in someone else’s. Hate never gets anything but more hate. Trump is our president so why not try a little love and see where that gets us. Being unfriended on FB because I hold a contrary view seems so petty and stupid. FYI - I did not unfriend any of my friends who loved and still do love Former President Obama.
* The stuff stated when I write will be straight from my heart. There are no shades of gray. It will be exactly how I feel in that moment.
It is my hope that I can create a blog either anonymously or under pseudo identity. I say this because i want to protect my family. Maybe someday, depending on how this all goes, I will be brave enough to come out from behind the words, but for now this is what you get. Some information is slightly altered to also protect my family.
I am married, I have two “adopted” kids. My husband and I did not receive word that we would get the kids till two weeks before we got married. The kids at the time were 9 and 11 and they are a biological brother and sister. Can you say I went from sheer excitement about getting married to being paralyzed with fear. The stats alone on marriages surviving “instant parenthood” are far worse than those who wait to have children. Talk about a God curveball! But like most things in life I jump in and as Dory would say “Just kept swimming.”
Fast-Forward six years...
I have now been married 6 years. I love my kids but they are at times more than I possibly can handle, especially my son who has grown to the towering height of 6’2 and he is only 15. My daughter is now a Senior in high school and she has no idea what she wants to do, has not taken The SAT’s and hasn’t even gotten her permit to drive. My son is angry all the time, he pretty much refuses to listen to me and ultimately he recently got physical with me and used his enormous strength to toss me to the side.
I HAVE FAILED MY KIDS. I keep thinking back, what could I have done differently? How could I have motivated them more, but I was always there, every game, every event I was able to make within my work schedule, I had awards on the wall, but yet they don’t care, nor do they think about the future. I believe part of the problem is TV shows like America’s Got Talent, The Voice, Little Big Shots, and I could name more. Those shows, show me what kind of child “I want” but not what kind of child “God gave me.”
We can’t look back, we can only look at now. Since the incident with my son, I am afraid of him, I walk on egg shells. Some think I should have had him arrested. Trust me, I gave it serious thought, but would that have changed anything? I would still have an angry, upset, teen. I sought medical advice. I can’t tell you how much the city I live in needs more mental health professionals. My son does not get his initial psych evaluation until almost September. However, his primary care physician has not left us out to dry and has started him on a medication to help him and guess what? It is helping. ALOT!
As for my daughter her life choices are endless. She is brilliant. She has one fatal flaw, she has no belief in herself. If it’s drawing she doesn’t think she is good enough (she is amazing and as a mom bragging she has never taken a drawing class). If it’s piano, she thinks she sucks — mind you she has only been playing 3 years and is one of the top students in her class. Or even sports. She is so naturally talented that if she practiced and dedicated herself to the craft she would have her college paid for. But her self-doubt dominates.
Sounds kind of hopeless? Not even close. God is a God who can do anything. For such a time as this. I believe I was laid off because both my husband and I were spending way too much time focused on our careers and not on our children to notice their pleas and cries for help.
If God can part a Red Sea, heal a leper, and raise Lazurus from the dead, He can and will work miracles in my children. It doesn’t start with my kids, it starts with ME. If any of this sounded familiar to you today, I urge you to get on your knees and ask God to forgive you and then ask God to fix you and then ask Him to refresh your hope because his supply of hope is endless!
Just take it all One Day was at a Time
