Hi, I love the genv series I just started and I’ve been reading it non stop , I love when the reader have abilities, but am not familiar with the future probability cognition super power , did you have anything where you touch up more on this ability and how they use it in battle
I’m glad you enjoy it! I learned about the power when I was researching psychic abilities since I had the idea for the reader to be able to predict the future. There’s a scene in the fourth part where she spars and her powers come into play then. Basically, she can make accurate predictions about the future based on how likely it is to happen. I think it makes more sense as you read it.
Warnings: None outside of Regency era appropriate language. Slow-burn.
A/N: This is only the first part and I had to cut myself off. Lmk if you want a second part. I don't own the gif or Bridgerton and don't claim to.
Word Count: 8k
Dearest Gentle Reader,
Each spring gives relief not only from the bitter, unforgiving English winter but also from sheer boredom. 'Tis the ton’s favorite time of year for a new crop of fresh, bright-eyed debutantes looking to make their impressions on the queen and the most eligible suitors. Few can ever live up to the diamond herself, Duchess Daphne Basset, but many can try. This year, Her Majesty appointed the title to Miss Edwina Sharma, a newcomer to the ton. With her wide eyes and perfected manners, she made a favorable impression on many of the men. However, what no one expected during the debut of a shining new star was a return of a familiar face.
Last night at Her Majesty’s first ball of the season, Lady _____ Talbot, nee Warwick, dowager Viscountess of Edinburgh, made a grand re-entry to society that not even her childhood friend, the aforementioned Duchess of Hastings, expected. The once shrinking violet stunned the ton during her initial debut with her marriage to Lord Henry Talbot, a man nearly twice her senior. Whispers throughout respectable society claimed the marriage had much less to do with love and more to do with the Talbot name and endless financial support. Despite the fortune hunting accusations, Lady Talbot held her head high and continued to engage in all societal functions and countess duties until her late husband’s business required them to relocate to his family estate in Scotland.
There were scant whispers about the quiet beauty until the unexpected death of Lord Talbot three years ago. The only thing more unexpected than the Viscount of Edinburgh’s death was the rumored inheritance bestowed upon his young wife. It is rather unusual and curious for a widow to receive the entirety of her husband’s estate, especially considering that the Viscount and Viscountess of Edinburgh were married for half a decade. One must wonder if it is true of what they say about the quiet ones or if the dowager countess is much more charming and strategic than anyone gave her credit for?
I also cannot help but wonder what Lady Talbot’s intentions are for the season. Is it to assist the Duchess of Hastings’ efforts to ensure Miss Eloise Bridgerton has a smooth season? Is it to stir drama and scandal? Could it possibly be for love? Whatever it is, I am sure her addition will make for an eventful season.
Lady Whistledown
Lady Talbot sipped her tea while musing over the column. In a sense, it was comforting that Lady Whistledown was still reporting on the scandals of the ton. In her initial debut, _______ recalled reading each edition aloud with Daphne at the Bridgerton home. At the time, she hadn’t minded taking a backseat to the spotlight since Daphne’s love life was much more exciting to observe. However, Whistledown’s mention of _______ presently couldn’t help but make her smile.
“Is that the new Whistledown?” Her father, Lord Warwick, questioned behind his newspaper.
As per usual, the patriarch looked every bit the esteemed political power broker he was in a pressed navy suit with exquisite gold accents. His short gray hair was cropped close to the scalp, highlighting his dark skin and eyes. Lady Warwick sat perpendicular to him at the vast dining room table in the Warwick townhome. Her silvering dark hair was styled in an elegant updo, and the subtle grays were the only tell that she was nearing five and sixty. Her blush pink day dress highlighted her willowy stature and unblemished dark brown skin.
“I thought gossip was below you, Lord Warwick,” Lady Talbot teased.
Lord Warwick cleared his throat. “It is not gossip if it is valid and favorable. Besides, you would like to be discussed in such a popular piece, yes?”
“Of course, every young lady wants Whistledown to write of them favorably, dear,” Lady Warwick insisted. “However, I do wish she mentioned your gown; it took Madame Delacroix ages to create the perfect shade of red.”
“I do wish you had gone with a less…provocative color,” Lord Warwick mused.
Lady Talbot gently set her teacup down in favor of another forkful of eggs. “I had to do something to stand out. All the debutantes are barely one and twenty while I am approaching thirty. Considering the…severity of the situation, I hope you can forgive me, Father.”
Lord Warwick opened his mouth but quickly closed it and returned to his paper, muttering something about Italian foreign policy. It was almost comical how cautious the baron was about his daughter’s pursuit of a second marriage; in her first attempt, ______ was positive her father would have a stroke any time a suitor said something flirtatious. Then again, _____ would not realize the flirtations until either her mother or Daphne pointed it out.
But ______ was older, wiser, and well aware of several men’s eyes on her as she navigated the ballroom last night. She even surprised herself with how easily she conversed with them. Of course, _______ had not expected to net the same amount of attention as the typical debutantes, but she was flattered by the attention. In her initial debut, ______ struggled to string together a proper sentence in front of men, particularly handsome ones.
Like Anthony, her inner voice teased.
Her stomach clenched at the thought of the dark-haired rake. Even though she’d known him since childhood, _______ could never figure Anthony out. She remembered when he used to be much more lighthearted and regularly participated in whatever mischief Daphne, Benedict, and _____ would get up to. Everything changed when his father died, and it was as though Anthony’s personality muted. For a long time, ______ had a loose idea of what the responsibility and title meant. As a dowager viscountess, she felt like she could empathize with Anthony a little more.
Part of her was grateful that Anthony was not actively engaged in the marriage mart when she and Daphne debuted. While it was hard not to laugh when Daphne complained about his interference, she appreciated it when Anthony gave her his honest assessment of Lord Talbot.
“You deserve every happiness, ______, and he has consistently proven that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to provide you with it,” he’d stated.
_______’s late husband was, admittedly, not the most handsome man pursuing her, but he was certainly the kindest and most considerate. ______ was comfortable around him, and Henry patiently listened to her ramble about everything from fashion to philosophy. Henry also never expected her to be any less intelligent than she was.
“Tis a dangerous thing to have both an admirable appearance and wits to match,” Henry would say.
_______ sighed at the thought of him. He was far too kind and generous for the world, let alone the ton. She used to feel sick every time someone made a rude comment about their different ages or mentioned the fortune hunter rumors. But Henry never let it bother him, and he was not bothered by much.
Lady Warwick smiled softly. “It is only natural for you to still miss him, ______.”
______ blinked and continued eating her breakfast. “I know. It feels strange to try to replace him.”
“Unfortunately, the choice is not yours.”
Her mother’s words stung, and it almost kept _____ from clearing her plate.
Almost.
Usually, the mention of Mr. Charles Smith was enough to make her gag. At three and thirty, the man was Henry’s oldest male relative. Though they were never close, Charles had made it his mission to discredit ______ in any and every way from receiving his uncle’s inheritance. Charles had no care or concern for how investigating Henry’s state of mind while he wrote up the will or attempting to find any flaws in ______’s character made the grieving process all the more grueling. After eight months with no success in either endeavor, Mr. Williams, Henry’s solicitor, executed the will and ensured that ______ received the entirety of the Talbot estate and holdings.
However, ______ was not foolish enough to believe that Charles would quit nipping at her heels. Unfortunately, there was only one way to keep him at bay: an advantageous marriage. _______ would have to marry a man with a high title that would secure her estate and shield her from Charles.
She would have to play the society game mercilessly, she doubted that any other woman could ever understand her predicament.
Lord Warwick drank the last of his coffee and rose from his seat at the end of the table. “I must be off to my meetings now. I will see you all at dinner and look forward to a favorable report.”
Lady Warwick and ______ stood and curtsied. Seconds after they did, Lord Warwick exited the home and _______ relaxed back in her chair. Ellie, Patricia, Lucas, and Sarah, some of the house servants, started clearing the half-empty platters and Lord Warwick’s place from the table.
“What time are the callers to arrive?” _______ asked.
“Thirty and ten,” Lady Warwick answered.
______ glanced up at the clock on the light green wall. She had around half an hour to mentally and emotionally prepare herself. Her father must have been pleased that she chose a soft lilac day dress to accept callers. The color highlighted her deep ebony skin and made her dark brown eyes pop. Anita, one of the maids, had pulled ______’s dark curls into a stylish updo.
Ms. Brown, the head maid, curtsied before approaching the table.
“Lady Warwick, Lady Talbot,” she greeted.
The older woman always managed to look put together in her all-black uniform. ______ had never seen Ms. Brown’s hair leave the simple, low bun at the nape of her neck. Her dark gray eyes saw everything.
“Ms. Brown, I must insist you call me ______, especially since you insist on reminding me how much you once had to change my nappies,” _______ teased.
Ms. Brown smiled softly. “My apologies; my training requires me to address all nobles of their title.”
“In the company of myself and my parents, you have my permission to use my first name. I will not cause you distress by requiring it of you during social engagements.”
“How many callers are we expecting today, Ms. Brown?” Lady Warwick asked.
“Four, Lady Warwick: Mr. Nicholson, Lord Bexley, Lord Russell, and Mr. Ashbrook.”
Though none were listed in particular order, all four of them came from well-established houses and were well-connected. Also, all four tied for irritating quirks.
For ten minutes, Lady _____ Talbot suffered through the wiry blond Lord Bexley expound on his moronic political takes, with no mind at how much spittle escaped his mouth. Lord Russell threatened to one up Lord Bexley’s carelessness with his hyper awareness.
“My apologies, Lady Talbot, but this is quite bothersome,” the young brunet insisted as he picked up a speck of dust from Lady Talbot’s skirt.
It would have been less irritating if he had not stopped the conversation several times to straighten a pristine teacup or to check his appearance in the silver teapot. When Lady Talbot glared at his retreating figure, Lady Warwick reminded her that the Bexleys had strong royal ties.
Lord Russell started off well enough but then….
“My apologies but I must inquire, what would the dowry look like with your new title. Solely for me to be prepared, of course,” he inquired.
It was all Lady Talbot could do not to throw him out herself.
“Thank you, Mr. Ashbrook, I will recall your wise words if I am ever to visit…”
The pause was not as strategic as _____ hoped it would be.
The stout man huffed. “New Guinea.”
“Right, thank you for your time.”
As soon as the door closed behind him, ______ collapsed into a plush cream settee with a huff.
“How is it that all four of them were insufferable? That must be an anomaly,” she groaned.
Lady Warwick paused from her needlework and wandered over to her daughter. “While they all had their faults, I do not think any of them should be taken out of consideration.”
______ stared at the older woman. “Truly? If I were to become Lady Bexley, in my husband’s ideal world, I would be unable to leave my house without submitting a request two weeks in advance.”
“The Bexleys are…conservative in their beliefs, but they do have some of the strongest royal ties in the ton.”
Royal ties were nice but not the primary objective. The primary objective was for ______ to find a husband she could get along with and keep Charles at bay. She would not, could not let her family fall in shame.
Lady Talbot pushed herself up and slid a large slice of seed cake onto her plate. “I do not recall my debutante season being this…exhausting.”
Lady Warwick smiled softly. “No, the late Lord Talbot was a godsend; he made the courtship simple but it was obvious that he cared deeply for you.”
_______ nodded absentmindedly as she started digging into the cake. She had been too busy pretending to be interested in the callers to indulge in anything Andrew, the house cook, prepared for the occasion. The spread was immaculate, as always, and _____ was thankful for a moment to breathe. The first bite of the cake was absolutely sinful and _____ had to suppress a groan.
She was about halfway through when Elijah, the footman, arrived to the sitting room. “Lord Anthony Bridgerton and Mr. Benedict Bridgerton for Lady _____ Talbot.”
The gasp ____ was about to let out sucked the piece of cake into a strange position in her throat. Immediately, she started coughing and hacking and Lady Warwick and Sarah tried to assist her. Her vision went blurry as she wondered what the eldest Bridgerton brothers wanted.
Finally, she recuperated and wiped away her tears.
“Send them in,” Lady Warwick instructed.
Seconds later, Benedict strolled into the room, his smile bright and his eyes filled with mirth. Anthony trailed closely behind him, shoulders squared, and his gaze sharp.
“Lady Warwick,” Benedict greeted with a slight bow. He turned slightly towards _____. “Lady Talbot, I hope I did not cause you any inconvenience.”
“No.” _____ coughed as she rose to her feet. “Not at all, I can always make time for an old friend.”
Anthony politely bowed towards ______ and her mother. “Lady Talbot; Lady Warwick.”
There was something piercing about Anthony’s gaze that almost made ______ hold her breath. However, she managed to breathe normally while Lady Warwick quietly relegated herself to her seat, a respectable distance from the trio. Both Bridgerton brothers took seats on the couch across from ______.
“Tea?” ______ offered.
“Unfortunately, we will not----,” Anthony began.
“Tea sounds lovely, we always have time for tea,” Benedict interrupted.
_______ raised an eyebrow before delicately pouring both of them tea and set it in front of them. “You are a little late for calling hours, Benedict.”
“As I said earlier, I do not mean to cause any inconvenience.” Benedict sipped some tea. “We were in the area and thought we would stop by.”
“Some more insistent than others,” Anthony commented.
“You caused quite the stir last night, and we barely had a moment to speak,” Benedict playfully complained.
“You danced twice,” Anthony pointed out.
“And with no room for conversation either time!”
_______’s face warmed at the memory of all the suitors who flocked to her after her entrance. Most were young and a bit younger than she would have preferred. However, they neglected to send letters or request an audience. Either their mothers wanted them to have the freshest of debutantes, or the allure of marrying into money was something only men had the advantage of utilizing.
“I did not mean to cause such a stir,” _____ insisted as she started to pick at her cake.
“Oh, please, maybe you never did in the past, but last night seemed quite intentional,” Benedict grinned. “I remember how you were shaking at your debut and could barely look at any of the suitors who approached.”
“I recall being terrified, but I do not recall multiple suitors.”
“I believe my favorite part was when you stepped on Anthony’s foot and immediately spilled lemonade on his favorite cravat,” Benedict reminisced.
_______’s cheeks and nose warmed at the memory. The floor fell out from under her at the time, and she had been positive Anthony was going to chastise her in front of the ton. Instead, he took several deep breaths as she profusely apologized and tried to dab as much lemonade from him as possible.
“Why must you remember only the most embarrassing things?” Anthony griped.
“I find that the more embarrassing the moment, the better the story,” Benedict replied before turning back to ______. “But nothing was embarrassing about you last night. You were truly a vision, like Venus herself emerging from the sea.”
______ chuckled behind a gloved hand. “I must say I missed your artistic perspective.”
“How was Scotland? Did it make you miss the ton?” Benedict asked.
“It was lovely; the accents were quite thick so it was hard for me to understand what any of the staff were saying for months, but they are some of the friendliest people I’ve met; truly warm,” _____ reminisced.
“You sound like you miss it,” Anthony commented.
_____ blinked. “Sometimes.”
“I have to ask what would make you leave a wonderful place and return here?” Benedict questioned.
_______ finished her cake and started nursing her cold tea. “It was time. I had not seen any of you for so long and I wanted to take the opportunity when it presented itself.”
“Just in time for the season,” Anthony mused.
______’s eyes darted towards him. “I am glad that the timing worked as such since I was able to assist Eloise.”
Benedict smirked while Anthony’s shoulders tensed. It was obvious that they did not have much faith in the younger sister to marry anyone anytime soon.
“Ah, yes, and I’m sure she appreciated it,” Benedict added. “Will you be attending the art exhibition tomorrow?”
“Of course, I would not miss it for the world,” ______ stated.
“Wonderful, I will enjoy listening to all your insights.”
Anthony cleared his throat. “I must ask, ______, how are you doing…really?”
_____ hesitated.
She had no idea where to start; most days, she felt somewhat normal, and then she would smell high-quality tobacco or read an article that she and Henry would have debated for hours. On those days, she would fall apart as soon as she was alone in her room. Then, there were others, where she remembered her aunt, Constance, sending her money to buy dresses for various balls and parties in her initial debut. She recalled all the nights she heard her parents arguing about money. The most daunting memory was the look in Mr. Smith’s eyes when he vowed to honor his uncle’s wishes.
His deep blue eyes were simultaneously soulless and terrifying. However, that would be too much to explain, so ______ said, “Fine, I am happy to be home. It’s nice to see everyone.”
Anthony frowned slightly. “I believe you will tell me how you honestly are when you are ready.”
_______ nearly balked. “I….It’s complicated. I do miss Henry, but I need to be wise about my future.”
“Of course; you always thought ahead, even when we were children.”
“How else would Benedict have successfully smuggled port from your father’s secret stash?”
______ chuckled at the memory while Anthony raised an eyebrow. However, _____ noticed the smallest quirk at the corners of his mouth.
“I still cannot believe he roped you and Daphne into his scheme,” Anthony mused.
“Come on, Anthony, everyone needs a little danger in their lives once in a while,” Benedict argued.
“I will never forget how furious you were when you found us,” ______ reminisced. “I couldn’t tell if you were going to lecture us or whip us.”
“Probably both,” Benedict concluded.
Anthony rolled his eyes. “The point is that you have always planned for things, and I am sure that you have carved out a way for yourself to survive.”
Even though he was observant, ______ couldn’t help but be taken aback at knowing that he paid such close attention to her. It made her wonder what else he noticed.
______ pushed the thought out of her mind. “Thank you, Anthony, but I hear that I am not the only one here carving out a way for myself.”
Anthony frowned for a moment until he caught a glimpse of Benedict’s mischievous grin and ______’s smirk. “I am not sure what you mean.”
“Oh, come off it, Anthony,” Benedict waved him off.
“Every eligible lady knows that Viscount Bridgerton is in the market for a bride,” ______ stated. “And everyone in the ton knows that he will not settle for less than the best.”
Anthony pressed his lips together and sipped more tea. “It could not be avoided forever…it was time.”
“And just when Miss Edwina Sharma makes her debut and becomes Her Majesty’s favorite,” _____ observed. “Interesting timing.”
“If you must know, I was on my way home from visiting with Miss Sharma when Benedict insisted, I accompany him here.”
“There’s no need to get defensive; Miss Sharma is a lovely young woman, and I am sure she will see your…charm.” ______ smiled. “It is good that we are both seeking something stable this season.”
Benedict pouted. “And why am I not included in this endeavor?”
“Because your idea of stability is only occasionally forgetting what happened during a raucous night,” ______ dead-panned.
Benedict could not help but chortle at her tone, and she joined him. _______ noticed Anthony watching her and Benedict with a look in his eye that she could not quite place. There was no need since decoding Anthony Bridgerton’s expressions was not on her list of responsibilities.
Anthony stood. “I do believe we took enough of your time, Lady Talbot.”
Benedict slowly rose but the twinkle in his eye was still evident. “You must visit us soon, _______. I believe you are the only one who can quell Eloise’s constant need for political debates.”
“I shall as soon as I can,” _____ promised.
Benedict bowed one last time to _____ and Lady Warwick before exiting the room. The room was silent, save for the occasional carriage passing by outside.
“It was nice speaking with you again, Lady Talbot,” Anthony said.
“And you as well, Lord Bridgerton,” ______ replied. “I do mean what I said earlier; I am happy that you are looking for something or someone you can rely on.”
“I appreciate it, Lady Talbot.” Anthony paused, and ______ could tell that he was mulling something over. Finally, he stated, “I do hope that you find what you need this season.”
While Anthony had a way of stating everything like fact, his words did something to ______. It was as though they permeated something in her, something deep within that she could never name but always sensed. She wondered what it could mean.
Over the next few days, Lady ______ Talbot would suffer through dull conversations, stunted flirtations, and horrid breath with her rotation of suitors. Every time they met, she reminded herself that this would all be worth it. All she needed was someone titled enough to keep Mr. Smith’s paws far away from the Talbot estate.
Besides the suitors, the most irritating thing she had to contend with was the hawk-like eyes of mamas and their suspicious daughters. Every move _____ made was scrutinized, whether it was the material of the gloves she chose or who she chose to speak to for more than a few seconds. It was only sensible that these dynamics followed her to the Cowpers’ garden party.
The tastefully lavish estate was donned in colorful spreads of hyacinths, magnolias, and peonies and the guests blended in perfectly with the environment. Servants in crisp whites floated seamlessly through the crowds with trays of lemonade, quiches, and finger sandwiches. The string quartet’s performance added to the elegant ambiance.
Chatter filled the air as Lady Talbot and Lady Warwick entered the Cowper’s garden. Lady Warwick donned a bright white cotton gown for the occasion and tastefully accessorized with pearls. Her daughter chose yet another daring outfit in her mint green silk dress complete with low neckline. Her matching scarf added even more regality to her appearance and a few curls fell into her eyes.
Lady Talbot fought the urge to smirk as the chatter began to dwindle as the heat of more eyes trilled through her body.
“You are no longer afraid of risk, Daughter,” Lady Warwick whispered as they descended the stairs.
“A lifetime of listening to you and Papa encourage me to accept risk in life sunk in,” she muttered back.
Lady Cowper’s raised eyebrows betrayed her true feelings as she and her husband approached them. “Lady Warwick, Lady Talbot, I am so pleased that you could join us.”
Both women curtsied.
“Of course, we would be remiss to not attend one of your lovely garden parties,” Lady Warwick insisted.
Lady Talbot nodded. “Your home is even lovelier than I remember, Lady Cowper.”
“Thank you, dear, and you are much…bolder than I recall.”
The woman could barely hold back her disdain, but Lady Talbot forced the nerves rising from the pit of her stomach down.
“I have learned that fortune honors the bold, Lady Cowper. If you would excuse me.” Lady Talbot curtsied before wandering further into the party.
As she maneuvered, she pretended not to see several men ogle her while their debutantes pouted or tried not to huff. She nodded politely to a few women she knew from childhood before helping herself to a glass of lemonade.
“Lady Talbot, I am grateful that you were able to make it today!” Mr. Ashbrook bounded up to her similarly to how Puck, her childhood dog, would greet her.
Mr. Ashbrook’s large teeth and stiff posture were a far cry from her loyal companion. ______ forced a soft smile.
“Mr. Ashbrook, a pleasure,” she replied.
“I was wondering when I would see you again.” His eyes drifted to her dress, and his cheeks reddened. “I saw an article in The Defender that made me think of you.”
______ sipped some lemonade. “Really?”
“Yes, it was all about how the infrastructure in Asia has been negatively impacted by----”
“Mr. Ashbrook, I am truly sorry for interrupting, but I must borrow _____ for a moment,” Daphne interrupted.
She had appeared out of nowhere in a lightweight baby blue dress, deep blonde hair styled in the most elegant updo. Mr. Ashbrook sputtered something, but neither woman caught it as Daphne whisked _____ away.
“You are an angel,” ______ sighed.
“I do try from time to time,” she teased.
When they got far enough away from him, they stopped, and Daphne adjusted the white shawl around her shoulders. “You must tell me everything that has been going on. I cannot believe I am getting updates about my best friend from Whistledown of all sources.”
“Well, you have been busy with Augie and the Hastings estate. I did not want to burden you with such trivial matters.”
“I am never too busy to catch up. Now, please tell me you were conversing with Mr. Ashbrook out of kindness.”
_____’s hesitation spoke louder than any words. “Despite his dullness, his new appointment in Parliament has yielded quite generously.”
Daphne glanced back at the man, who had somehow trapped Colin in conversation. She looked away before Colin could silently beg her to rescue him.
“While it is always good to keep a man’s standing in mind, it is not everything,” she asserted.
“But, of course. However, it is quite a large thing women must consider, especially if she is eight and twenty,” _____ replied.
“I did not mean any offense, ______, I simply mean that I want more for you, and you should also want more for yourself,” Daphne insisted.
Before _____ could reply, Benedict sidled up to Daphne. “If Lady Hopkins tries to push her daughter upon me one more time, I will scream.”
“How gentlemanly of you,” Daphne teased.
“Please, he is doing us all a favor by keeping that shrill shriek inside,” ______ added.
Benedict gasped with faux shock. “Are you insinuating something about me, Lady Talbot?”
She shrugged. “Only that few people in attendance witnessed your reaction to a harmless prank years ago on Halloween.”
“That is unfair; you two knew that I was afraid of ghosts!”
“We were in sheets!”
“It was still terrifying!” Benedict shivered. “The mere thought of it gives me nightmares from time to time.”
Daphne and _____ burst into laughter as Benedict continued pleading his case. However, his wide grin also suggested lightheartedness. As they were reminiscing, Lady Violet Bridgerton approached them.
“Pardon me, but do you mind if I borrow Daphne?” she asked.
“No,” _____ answered.
“Not at all,” Benedict agreed.
“What is the issue, Mama?” Daphne asked.
Lady Violet sighed. “Your sister has trapped Lord Rutherford in a debate.”
Her eyes glanced in the couple’s direction. They were off to the side, with Eloise gesturing strongly with her hands while Penelope stood pensively beside her. The handsome Lord Rutherford looked more flustered than any debutante present.
“Duty calls,” Daphne mused before wandering over to the pair.
Lady Violet turned her attention to Benedict and _____. “Lady Talbot, how lovely to see you again.” She raised an eyebrow. “And that dress!”
“It’s from Paris, all the women are dressing like this,” _____ informed.
“How lovely for you to partake in that,” Lady Violet stated. “Never mind that, I must know when you and your parents will join us for dinner.”
“Any time, I am sure.”
Lady Violet glanced at Benedict. “Why did you not extend them the invitation the day you called on them?”
“It slipped my mind, and we had such fun catching up and antagonizing Anthony,” he explained.
“Where is he, anyway?” ______ asked.
Lady Violet gestured towards the middle of the party. There, Anthony made his stake on Miss Edwina clear as he stared into her soul as she spoke. The young girl was brilliant in her golden gown, and her older sister and mother were stunning as well in their posts nearby. Of course, the other eligible suitors circled like hawks, but Anthony’s glare made them less bold.
“They have hardly been apart since their introduction; I do believe it is serious,” Lady Violet said.
“Ah, yes, Anthony has maintained a connection with a woman for longer than a few hours; someone call the historians.”
Lady Violet smacked Benedict’s arm while _____ snorted and immediately apologized.
“No, I believe that is the most charming sound I’ve heard you utter in our entire lives,” Benedict jested.
For once, the air around ______ felt light instead of tense, and she had forgotten how much fun she had with Benedict. Eventually, Benedict offered her his arm, and she gladly accepted it before they approached Anthony and the Sharmas.
“Now, brother, I thought you had better manners than to keep a lady all to yourself,” Benedict teased.
Anthony immediately stiffened but managed a smile. “That was hardly my intent, Benedict.”
“Oh, I do love your dress!” Edwina exclaimed as she stared at ______’s ensemble.
“Thank you, Miss Edwina, you look lovely as well. I do not believe we have ever been properly introduced,” _____ replied.
“Yes, Anthony, introduce our old friend,” Benedict playfully challenged.
Anthony tried not to grit his teeth before turning to Edwina. “Miss Edwina, this is Lady Talbot; she’s an old childhood friend of Daphne’s. Lady Talbot, Miss Edwina.”
Edwina and ______ curtsied to each other.
“You’re the famous Lady Talbot?” Edwina asked.
“Well, I would not say famous….” ______ trailed off.
“Oh, but of course! Everyone knew about your wedding and----” Edwina cut herself off. “My apologies, My Lady, for your loss.”
“You are kind, Miss Edwina.”
Then, Kate stepped forward. “I do not believe we have had the pleasure to meet, Lady Talbot.”
Anthony quickly introduced the older Sharma women and Lady Talbot.
“You are even lovelier in person, Lady Talbot,” Lady Sharma gushed.
“Thank you. I am fortunate enough to survive a few highland winters and tell the tales,” Lady Talbot jested.
As they conversed, _____ felt Anthony’s eyes keep darting towards her. Somehow, it was both irritating and something else. ______ could not help but notice how kind he was to Edwina and attentive; she wasn’t sure if she had ever seen this side of him.
When they were both satisfied with their light pestering, Benedict and _____ politely exited the conversation and ended up being drawn into Daphne’s predicament with Eloise and Lord Rutherford.
“…and would it not be daft to include half the population in such serious matters!” Eloise concluded.
“I suppose so, Miss Eloise,” Lord Rutherford mused.
“My sister is quite passionate, Lord Rutherford,” Daphne mused as she intertwined an arm with Eloise. “She will make for a spirited verbal sparring partner.”
“My dear little sister is making a poor, innocent her victim!” Benedict muttered to ______.
Lady Talbot managed to chuckle to herself before stepping forward. “Miss Eloise, I do believe I was promised your ear on a discussion of Greek mythology?”
Eloise blinked. “Mythology is not my specialty, but----”
“Then you will make an even better conversation partner,” _____ interrupted, smoothly pulling Eloise towards her. “Will you excuse us, Lord Rutherford?”
He hesitated and nodded, silently watching Daphne and _____ lead Eloise away with Benedict trailing behind them.
“And what is it about mythology you wanted to discuss,____?” Eloise questioned.
_____ huffed and released the girl from her grip. “Oh, Eloise, do not tell me that Lady Bridgerton never taught you how to spot an opportunistic break in conversation?”
Eloise’s shoulders slumped slightly in her violet dress, but Daphne quickly uprighted her. “Why must we be subject to such pageantry, anyway? All this thought put into floral arrangements, gowns, bonnets, gloves, and worthless skills; do you know what we could have invented in such time?”
“I am sure the future members of Parliament will love to hear your theories and thoughts when you run it but for now, the best thing you can do is try to find a match,” Daphne said.
Eloise huffed. “I am supposed to pick a man out of this group? That’s like asking me to select a fish from a rotting fish stand.”
“Never change, Eloise,” Benedict requested.
_____ giggled and shook her head. “You will always be yourself, will you not, Eloise?”
Eloise hesitated but smiled softly.
“_______, is that you? I could hardly recognize you.” Cressida’s syrupy voice laced with venom as it cut through the air. The heiress sauntered toward them in a magenta gown, complete with matching hat and fan.
“It is Lady Talbot, Miss Cowper,” Daphne corrected.
Cressida blinked in feigned surprise. “Oh, forgive me, Lady Talbot. I did not think you would extend such requirements to old friends.”
“And I did not think you had such a loose definition of the term ‘old friends’,” _____ replied.
Benedict bit back a laugh, Eloise raised an eyebrow, and Daphne smirked in spite of herself while ____ straightened up to face Cressida properly.
“I am glad that you returned to the ton in time for the season. You seemed to be in mourning for so long,” Cressida commented.
“I am happy to be able to assist Miss Eloise in her first season, and spring is the perfect time to visit London, do you not agree?” _____ shot back.
“Of course, whenever would we have the chance to show off our garden?” Cressida purred. “And whenever would you have the chance to wear such brave dresses?”
“It is not brave in Parisian circles, Miss Cowper,” _____ began, “however, one must be curious enough to expand beyond their comforts to learn such things.”
Cressida’s neck started to redden, but she pursed her lips. “I suppose one person’s vulgarity is another person’s respectability.”
The gleam in Cressida’s green eyes screamed that she believed she had landed the killing blow, but _____ continued,
“Yes, as one person’s ignorance is another person’s intelligence.” She smiled. “Thank you again for inviting me to such a lovely party.”
Cressida sputtered before turning on her heel and disappearing into the crowd, as the scheming glee had done to her eyes. _____ turned to her friends to find Benedict beaming, Daphne stunned, and Eloise smirking.
“You have truly transformed, Lady Talbot,” Benedict mused.
“I have never seen someone look like they swallowed a frog before; it was beautiful,” Eloise added.
“You used to whisper such comments to me but never said it to the person in the moment,” Daphne reflected.
_____ shrugged. “I have learned that life is too short to always bite my tongue.”
“Agreed!” Eloise and Benedict shouted.
_____ burst out laughing and continued to converse conspiratorially with the two as Daphne smiled at the exchange, adding her commentary here and there. Just as she looked away, ______ made eye contact with Anthony.
He had not moved far from his original spot at Edwina, and his mother conversed animatedly. Part of her wanted to flinch and look away, but she didn’t. Instead, she stared back at him, noticing his jaw tightening as they did.
If he has something to say, he should just say it, she thought angrily.
That evening, the Warwicks convened for dinner at the Bridgertons’ at Lady Violet’s insistence. However, no one told them that the Sharmas would also be in attendance. The trio was dressed in elegant gowns, each in a jewel tone: Lady Sharma in a vibrant ruby, Miss Kate in a dazzling sapphire, and Miss Edwina in a soft opal. The Bridgerton men were dressed as dapper as usual while the girls all donned varying shades of Bridgerton blue: Lady Bridgerton’s was powder blue, Daphne’s was more of a teal, Eloise’s leaned towards periwinkle, Francesca’s was cerulean, while Hyacinth’s frock matched the color of the afternoon sky. Of course, the Warwicks looked fantastic as well: Lord Warwick’s suit jacket had the smallest hint of burgundy, Lady Warwick donned a tastefully shiny black dress, and Lady Talbot stayed conventional in an embroidered Pomona green evening gown.
Lady Bridgerton sat at the head of one part of the table while Anthony sat at the other.
“I do believe it is time for a toast,” Lady Bridgerton murmured. “Anthony, if you will.”
Anthony nodded and stood, raising his glass. “It is a pleasure to have friends here for dinner----”
“Some older than others,” Benedict whispered to Edwina, who tried to hide her chuckle behind her glove.
Anthony shot a glare at him. “May we always be in each other’s lives,” Anthony glanced at ____, “no matter how far we go.”
Everyone clinked glasses and the dinner began. _____ carefully sipped wine throughout to quiet her rampant thoughts about Anthony’s toast. It made no sense; how could he do that when they hardly speak?
“Lady Talbot, I hear that you acclimated nicely to Edinburgh,” Kate, who sat across from her, commented.
______ nodded. “Yes, it is a lovely city. I can barely understand everyone but they are quite kind.”
A few laughs erupted around the table.
“My favorite part was the riding, though. Having all that land to gallop across was something out of a book,” ______ quietly mused.
“You ride?” Kate asked.
“Yes, I have since I was little.”
“She used to race us from time to time,” Benedict added.
“And won most times,” ______ teased.
Anthony cleared his throat. “I am not so sure about that.”
______ turned towards him. “I am quite sure that I beat you nearly every time, Lord Bridgerton.”
“Nearly is correct,” Anthony muttered.
“I do recall you being quite upset when she beat you by a hair,” Colin mused.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so red,” Daphne stated.
“Really? Lord Bridgerton was red?” Edwina asked.
“My siblings exaggerate,” Anthony asserted.
Benedict stabbed a cherry tomato on his plate and held it up. “About as red as this, Miss Edwina.”
Kate started to chuckle while Edwina was still processing.
“Benedict…” Anthony warned.
“I believe it might have been a lighter shade than that,” Colin objected.
______ sighed a laugh as she finished the roast chicken on her plate. “It really is no matter since it was ages ago. However, to answer your question, Miss Kate, I do ride. How about yourself?”
“Yes, I love riding as well. It helps me clear my head,” Kate mused.
“I could not agree more.”
Slowly, other conversations broke out around the table: Lord Warwick and Lady Sharma discussed current events in India, Lady Bridgerton juggled correcting Hyacinth and Gregory’s table manners, Francesca chatted with Edwina about their mutual musicality while Anthony tried to provide his views, Lady Warwick listened to Colin’s more recent travel tales, and Kate and Benedict learned more about Lady Talbot’s life in Scotland.
“Is there any decent food?” Kate asked.
“If you know where to look,” _____ replied.
“What are the artists like?” Benedict questioned.
“Depressed but sweet.”
“What was your favorite thing about your husband?”
With her question, Kate silenced the entire table. Everyone must have been thinking it and Lady Talbot wondered if Miss Kate had a knack for saying what others think. Lady Talbot grabbed her wine glass and started swirling it.
“There are many things, but I believe the root of it was his kindness. He treated everyone with respect , no matter if they were titled, and he could listen to his nieces prattle on all day when most would find an excuse to leave.” Lady Talbot paused. “On Sundays, we would always have slow mornings before attending service. He would have the same thing: a perfectly toasted English muffin with fresh strawberry jam, two brats, and Earl Grey tea. We would dine in silence together and follow it with a walk on the grounds. He told me all about his family’s history and never repeated a story. He was rare and I was blessed to know him.”
When she looked up, everyone looked a little blurry and it took her a moment to realize she’d started tearing up. When she blinked them away, she realized everyone else was either tearing up or somber.
“Thank you for sharing that with us,” Benedict whispered.
Lady Talbot blinked again. “Well, I…I did….the last thing I wanted was to make the evening somber.”
“You have hardly done that, my dear,” Lady Bridgerton gently claimed. “You have shared a piece of yourself with all of us, and we are glad you have.”
“And you are also rare, _____,” Daphne chimed in. “Everyone here is fortunate to know you.”
Lady Talbot nodded and sipped more wine. As she set her glass down, she glanced at Anthony.
“I am glad that I consider you a friend, Lady Talbot,” Anthony concurred.
She didn’t know how to receive that but nodded anyway. After this, dinner continued normally until dessert. They gathered in the drawing room to listen to Francesca’s newest piece. The delightful tune filled the room with glee.
Lord Warwick tapped his knee in time while Lady Warwick smiled warmly. Lady Bridgerton was the image of a proud mama while Gregory and Hyacinth struggled to keep their eyes open.
“She’s gotten quite good,” ____ commented as she nibbled a macaron.
“She had to; Mama makes her practice nearly every day,” Benedict whispered.
“She never complains,” Daphne quietly added.
“Well, one of you had to be somewhat agreeable.”
Daphne and Benedict chuckled.
In their laughter, _____ caught Anthony leaning against a wall. His attention seemed divided between Francesca and the Sharmas, who were all sharing a couch to the right of the couch she shared with Benedict and Daphne. Behind them, Eloise kept picking desserts off a tray while quietly bickering with Colin.
______ could not help but wonder what he meant by his earlier statement or any of his lingering looks. She could not recall Anthony truly looking at her before she was married or her return. _____ also could not recall caring about Anthony’s expressions or words since they were children. If she were honest, she felt more like a child around him.
“Do not tell anyone but in a two weeks’ time, a few of my art society friends are having a soiree and I am required to bring at least one debutante,” Benedict whispered.
_____ perked up. “Would you like me to tell Miss Edwina or Eloise?”
“No, no, Miss Edwina is too…polite and Eloise would critique her way out of the venue,” he quietly argued. “I do believe that you count in this scenario.”
_____ smiled. “I cannot possibly get into any trouble or scandal so early in the season, Benedict.”
“Who said anything about trouble? I am simply offering you a night with outcasted bohemians, filled with cultured conversation and absinthe; I know that you are starving for both.”
“It’s quite bold for you to assume that I have partaken in drinking absinthe.”
“Forgive me, Lady Talbot, but I would be delighted if you would grace us with your presence.”
“I shall see if I am available at that time.”
Francesca finished the note with a flourish, and everyone applauded. She curtsied politely before wandering over to her mother. Edwina stood and rushed to her, gushing about her performance while Kate watched on.
Anthony strolled over to Daphne, Benedict, and ______’s couch and leaned towards Benedict. “A word.”
His tone was so serious that Benedict could not banter back. He politely stood and followed his brother out of the drawing room.
“That looks fun,” _____ deadpanned.
“He’s probably only stressed. I do believe this is the first time we have had the Sharmas for dinner, as well,” Daphne assured.
____ leaned back against the couch. “I would have thought Anthony would have learned to relax by now.”
After several moments and many more macarons, Lord and Lady Warwick decided that it was time to leave. Lady Talbot rose as well and began to bid Daphne and her sisters farewell when she realized that she did not have her wrap.
“Oh, I believe I left it in the dining room,” she said.
“I can have someone fetch it,” Lady Bridgerton offered.
“No need,” ______ looked at her parents, “I shall meet you in the foyer.”
They nodded and she started weaving her way back to the dining room. Amidst the servants cleaning the area, she found her black wrap still hanging off the back of her chair. Lady Talbot quickly grabbed it and started making her way towards the foyer. She was about halfway there when she heard Benedict’s voice.
“I thought you wanted me to converse with more respectable ladies, who is more respectable than _____?” Benedict questioned.
It was coming from the library, and the door was partially cracked. Lady Talbot knew she should continue on her way, but her name was brought up, and she had to know why. She quietly crept to the door and continued to listen.
“Lady Talbot does have her charms, but that is also what got her embroiled in a scandal the first time!” Anthony asserted. “I will not have anyone in this house associating with her; we cannot afford any dalliances.”
“‘Dalliances’? Anthony, she is Daphne’s best friend and one of mine, as well. And she was hardly in a scandal; she could not help that she fell in love with an older man.”
“An older man who happened to be one of the most monied men in society? That’s hardly a coincidence, Benedict.”
______ could not believe her ears. Anthony truly thought so lowly of her even though they were friends? All those looks and words were not from a place of familiarity but from disdain.
“Sure, as it is hardly a coincidence that the same year you decide you need to marry, you are bewitched by the queen’s new favorite?”
Anthony hesitated. “That is different. Edwina is not a fortune hunter.”
“And neither is ______.”
“Look at the facts: she returns just in time for the season when she could have returned anytime after mourning. She is not here just to help Eloise; she is here for a new husband and probably one wealthier than her first. I will not let you be a pawn in this.”
“I am no pawn. If I want to have conversations with Lady Talbot, I shall. I am old enough to make such a decision.”
Lady Talbot’s heart should have swelled at Benedict’s defense, but it was nearly flattened after Anthony’s sentiments. As she continued on her way, she felt like sobbing. She knew it would be difficult to engage in the marriage mart at her age and as a widow, but she never thought that any of her friends would turn on her like Anthony.
As she continued, the urge to sob turned into the urge to scream. When she entered the foyer, the urge to scream transformed into the urge to fight. When she entered the family’s carriage, the urge to fight was replaced with the urge to make Anthony regret uttering anything about her.
Lady of Shadows-Anthony Bridgerton Imagine Excerpt
A/N: Something I've been working on. Let me know if I should post the full thing. I don't own Bridgerton, the gif, or anything else and don't claim to.
Hey, I'm the June checkup coming back! Sorry the streak was ruined. Anyway, how are you doing? (I thought you deleted your account because it would show up in my followed accounts anymore lol.)
It’s all good! I’m okay, I’ve been dealing with writer’s block but I’m working on it. Thanks for the check ins 😄
Hihi! Hope you're healing well, saw the pattern of updating on the 10th and wanted to check that you're still good!
I had no idea I did that but I’m okay. I have a constant dull headache in the back of my head but I can concentrate way better and my balance has improved a lot.
Also, I’m adjusting to my new puppy and she’s taken over my life in the best way. Thanks for checking in!
Okay, it's been a month since someone checked in on you. Are you still doing well?? (Sorry if I come off as pushy, I'm just worried.)
Oh, thanks! I’m doing okay. Concussion recovery is taking forever but I’m a lot better than I was before. I’m hoping to start writing soon because I have a lot of ideas, just don’t know how to write them.
Hi everyone! I was going to update tonight but I took a nasty fall this morning and am taking the time to recover. I didn’t break anything but I’m pretty bruised up and in a lot of pain.
Thanks to everyone who continues to support my work and have a great weekend 😀
do u have a timeline for unpredictable update? no rush, i just would love to know if the "checking ur blog multiple times a day" thing i currently have going on can be relaxed lol, love ur writing!
Hi! I’m hoping for this weekend. Just been real busy with offline life lately. 😄

Series Masterlist
Many experts are concerned with the pervasiveness of serial killers in a supe society. Some people propose intense ideas, like using AI or supes with predictive abilities to kill potential serial killers beforehand. Others…
I paused my fingertips over the keyboard and sighed. “It’s okay, just breathe and think of the words. Dr. Melrose is one of the nicer professors, anyway.”
Then, my fingertips started moving again.
Others think this is too extreme and argue that serial killers have a right to live as much as anyone else. Which is the dumbest idea on planet earth.
Nope, can’t submit that.
I punched my thumb on the backspace button and stared at my two semi-decent sentences. Then, I glanced down at the clock in the bottom right corner of the screen and sighed.
The essay had a minimum fifteen-page requirement and it took me an hour to come up with two sentences.
I groaned and leaned back against the swivel chair and stared up at the stark white ceiling. Last year’s campus library renovation included an impressive update of the study rooms, including making them sound-proof, power-proof, and equipped with the most state-of-the-art technology.
My textbooks and notebooks were sprawled around the table, each with color-coded highlights and meticulous notes that did nothing but make my head spin. Usually, I spent most of my writing time trimming down my page length, especially when it came to ethical issues around crimefighting. But my brain couldn’t focus despite the distraction-free environment.
No matter what I did, I kept picturing the looks on Jordan and Marie’s faces when I told them I couldn’t go to the town hall. They both looked like I had taken away a large chunk of their hope.
But I couldn’t have been that helpful anyway, I thought harshly.
Sure, I helped them gather information and connected some dots but anyone could have done that.
I clapped. “Y/N, you have to stop thinking about them and the town hall. You need to finish this paper.”
Just when I grazed my keyboard, the study room door swung open. I jumped and turned to ask the person to leave, but stopped when I saw Coco standing in the doorway. In her cropped black Tommy Hilfiger blazer and matching cigarette pants, she looked like a debate moderator. Her hair fell in perfect curls and her eyes slightly narrowed at me.
“Hey, you could have knocked,” I said as light-heartedly as I could.
Coco let the door close softly behind her before sauntering over to me. “My bad, I was in a hurry. I thought I’d find you here since you weren’t at the house.”
Coco’s tone was much shorter than usual and she kept her gaze on me. My stomach churned and I straightened up.
“Coco, it was a directive from Sydney, not me,” I explained.
Coco sighed. “I don’t know why I thought I could surprise you when you know everything.”
“Not everything.”
“Anyway, what the hell is that directive about? How does she want to ‘pursue our ambitions’ but not voice our opinions?” Coco scoffed. “I knew her whole I-care-about-all-women schtick was bullshit.”
“Did you talk to her about it?”
The look Coco gave me made me shrink back into my chair.
“Why do you let her walk all over you? She made you do her dirty work.”
“As a secretary, I do have to send out communications about a variety of things; it’s part of my role. Besides, it wasn’t my decision.”
“Don’t hide behind your role, Y/N. You’ll do anything to stay good with them, even if it means missing out on a historical moment.”
I hesitated. This would not be the last time that two polar opposite politicians would face off on core issues, but it would be the first time that the main issue was supes.
“I get that you care about this since it’s your major and everything but, I have to set a good example for the other girls and the initiates.”
Coco rolled her eyes. “Do you know what the other girls and initiates are doing? They’re arguing with Sydney right now and some are trying to figure out if a shapeshifter can somehow change their appearances. Everyone wants to be a part of it; Sydney’s just scared of fallout and I know that you know that.”
While I did have many ideas about why Sydney made the decision she did, it didn’t matter. I tried to push back but it failed and I had to deal with the consequences.
“I know she’s trying to protect Si Chi’s legacy and reputation and even if I don’t agree with it, I don’t have a choice.”
“Damn it, Y/N, you always have a choice! You always choose to follow the rules but guess what? Rule followers get forgotten in history; it’s the people who stir up shit that gets remembered.”
I glanced at my laptop. “Not always.”
“Well, most of the time but that’s not the point.” Coco pulled the chair from the other side of the table around and sat next to me. “You could do some real shit in the real world if you weren’t so caught up in your own head.”
Her words made me pause. This wasn’t the first time that Coco tried to push me to “think bigger” and it was usually flattering. This time, I felt myself get more and more nauseous.
I sipped some water. “I don’t think you always have to rebel to create change.”
“There’s a time for everything.” Coco leaned back in her chair and glanced at her phone. “I have to start walking to the union before everything gets too crazy. I hope you’ll have my back at the house.”
She didn’t wait for a reply and slipped out of the room almost as quietly as she entered. Immediately, I slumped in my chair and pouted.
Not everyone could be like Coco and take risks like that. In her situation, rankings didn’t matter, she just had to graduate and network like crazy. It was different for me and anyone else who was trying to at least get a city contract; rebellion did not look good on a resume.
Coco isn’t the only one risking their reputation, my brain reminded me.
I groaned and rubbed my hands over my face. Even though Jordan was always hellbent on climbing to number one, they wanted to expose everything happening at GOD U. According to Cate, Jordan had a whole meltdown when Andre and Marie’s rankings forced them to number five. Despite all that, they wanted to do the right thing.
And then there was Marie. She’d unexpectedly received everything any GOD U student could want on a silver platter: a high ranking, backing from Vought, and promotions on social and regular media. But she never wavered when it came to the Woods.
And it’s not like I didn’t want to go to the town hall, I couldn’t. There would be cameras everywhere and the news would get back to Sydney faster than A-Train. Her icy glare sent a chill down my spine at the thought.
I shook my head.
I can’t focus on any of that, I had to focus on this essay.
Finally, I started writing:
Other people suggest that such practices are much too inhumane and that serial killers must experience early interventions as soon as possible. However, in such a situation, it is near-impossible to determine the best practices much less who would deliver them.
I smiled to myself as I kept writing and breathed a sigh of relief once I finished my thesis statement.
“Great, now all I have to do is----”
“Y/N, what the hell!” Emma demanded.
I jumped and turned to the study room door. Emma’s face was beet-red and she had detergent stains all over her sweatpants. The door slammed behind her as she stormed over to me.
“What?” I asked.
Emma shook her head. “You know what. I just got off a video call with Marie; what the hell happened?”
My stomach dropped and I almost let my head plant on the desk.
At this point, it was like the two of them were haunting me. After a couple of deep breaths, I explained Sydney’s order and how I had to break the news to Marie and Jordan. As I spoke, Emma’s expression became more solemn.
“Why would you do that? Things were going so well,” Emma mused.
“I have to keep my position in Si Chi, Emma, and I can’t do anything that messes with it.”
“Can’t or won’t?”
I hesitated, wondering if it was a little bit of both. Emma plopped down in the chair and dropped her bag on the ground.
“I know that you’re a good-two-shoes but you’re not that way all the time. I mean, you do regularly sneak off campus with the others,” Emma pointed out.
“Not so loud. You never know who could be listening,” I insisted.
“Anyway, I get that your parents really screwed you up but, when do you get to live your life?”
The last part sounded like something a really good therapist would say. Even if those words did come from a therapist, I still wouldn’t know how to answer. Every move I made since middle school was to get me to be a successful (married/engaged) supe and that was always enough for me. Mom and Dad both seemed please with each stride I made towards that goal, but it was always limited and I never stopped to think about what I wanted.
All I knew was that I was dying to know why Shetty wanted Cate and me to be friends, how long the Woods existed, and why she created the virus. I also knew that the thought of Jordan or Marie getting hurt because of all this made my chest ache.
I fidgeted with my hands. “I am living my life.”
“Are you? Do you really want to be in the library while everyone’s at the town hall? Do you really want to give up on looking into all of this?”
I snapped my eyes up at Emma. “Of course, I want to go but I also have to play it smart. Why can’t anyone understand that?” I sighed. “I just got here, Emma, and I don’t want to lose it, I can’t lose it.”
Emma frowned. “You didn’t try to look into the future about this.”
She was confident and her gaze never left mine. I wanted to push back but, there was no point. Out of everyone, Emma knew me best and there was no point in hiding. So, I explained everything about my power loss to her. The words felt like I was digging my nails into an open wound and I could feel my throat constricting towards the end.
“Shit,” she muttered.
I nodded. “I really can’t do anything out of line now; I have no leverage for Si Chi and if they found out my powers are gone, they’d kick me out immediately. Plus, I’ll get expelled, and then what? Work for my mom or dad?”
“I’m really sorry about your powers, Y/N, but you don’t know that they’re gone for good. Plus, there are plenty of other ways you can be successful here and once you graduate. You could write a tell-all book, work in research, or model like I’ve been telling you to do forever!”
I snorted at her words, which made Emma burst out laughing. I don’t know how long we laughed for, but it felt good. However, when it stopped, a realization dawned on me.
“I don’t know, Emma, things don’t tend to work out for me if I don’t follow a plan,” I expressed.
Emma wiped some tears from her eyes. “Like what?”
“Oh, I don’t know, maybe my powers going away because Cate’s brainwashed or getting caught up in a conspiracy that could get us all killed or maybe having your new boyfriend attack me.”
Emma flushed. “He’s not my boyfriend.”
I rolled my eyes. “But that all happened because I was going off the plan. I was supposed to focus and crack the Top Fifteen this year.”
“But Jordan and Marie weren’t in your plan, and they were pretty good.”
I sighed and rested my head on the desk. At first, I thought our conversation was going so well but then Emma had to bring them up.
“And it’s over before anything really even started.” I propped my chin up on my hands. “But that’s probably a good thing since I need to stay on track. I’ve only gone up to Sixteen.”
Emma pursed her lips and straightened up. Wordlessly, she stood and slowly made her way to the other side of the table. She paced back and forth for a second before slamming her hands down on the desk.
“No, you don’t get to talk like that. In our fifteen years of friendship, I have never seen you look at or act the way you do with Marie and Jordan. You look so happy, and you deserve to be happy, I don’t care what anyone else says and you need to start believing that.”
For a second, I thought my vision blurred but it was the tears welling up in my eyes. I willed them to stay away for a second.
“But what about Si Chi?” I wondered.
Emma groaned. “If they’re going to kick you out because you went to the town hall to be with your girlfriend and partner, then they’re idiots.” Emma stood. “But you have to decide which is more important.”
The issue was that the thought of losing either of them made me nearly hyperventilate. Si Chi was a beacon of social acceptance, but Marie and Jordan made me feel accepted. No matter how uncomfortable I felt sobbing in front of them or not wanting either of them to see me in bad lighting or makeup-less, they made me comfortable.
“They don’t want me back. They’re both…unstoppable and I’ve proven to be the exact opposite.”
“Come on, Y/N, stop with the self-doubt. I can promise you, Marie and Jordan want to be with you too, they just don’t know how to reach out.” She smirked. “You should have heard Jordan ranting about how they’d knock Sydney out of her power trip; Marie had to cut the call short to calm them down.”
I laughed a little at that. “Jordan always said that Sydney was the most mediocre telekinetic on campus.”
“But the point is they both still care a lot about you. They’re obviously hurt but you’re not totally unforgivable.”
“Thanks, Emma.”
“And if they did break up with, you always have me whenever I’m not with Sam.”
“Gee, thanks. Where is he, anyway?”
“Locked away in my dorm. Could you imagine him out there in the craziness?”
“Yes.”
Emma opened her mouth to argue but got cut off by her phone alarm going off. “I have to go switch out the laundry. I hope one cycle is enough to get blood out.”
When she left, I mulled over everything we talked about. Were she and Coco on the same wavelength or something? In both conversations, I could have started screaming at either of them but buried deep down, I knew that they both had good points.
Brink was always saying how we have to take calculated risks as heroes and it was important to minimize the damage. Even though he wasn’t my favorite professor, he did have some good points.
Maybe there was a way to minimize the damage with Si Chi and my relationship.
The thought made my hands shake as I packed up my things.
Fifteen minutes later, I was desperately trying to stop my shoulders from hiking up any further to my ears as I walked to the union. The protestors’ shouts all across the green were deafening and did nothing for my pounding head and heart. Throughout the crowd, several people were filming for social media and I did my best to avoid them.
After a few minutes, I spotted Jordan and Marie standing a couple of yards away from a side entrance that was guarded by two burly men. My heart skipped a beat as I watched their focused eyes on each other as they spoke.
Here goes nothing.
I slowly sauntered up to them, my mind racing with something, anything decent to say.
“…well, we have to figure out a way in,” Jordan muttered.
“Hi,” I chirped.
When they both faced me, I had to force myself not to try to run. Marie’s eyebrows raised and Jordan slightly narrowed her eyes at me.
“What are you doing here?” Jordan asked.
I swallowed. “I’ve had a couple of pretty intense conversations that helped me realize that you were both right: the Woods is bigger than GOD U and I should help expose it. I’m sorry about earlier, I was scared and I still am but, I want to help in any way that I can.”
The next couple of seconds felt like a million years. Finally, Marie smiled and relaxed.
“Does this mean that you don’t care about Si Chi anymore?” she asked.
“No, I’m petrified of all the cameras but I’m trying really hard not to think about it,” I admitted.
“Well, it’s a good first step. We’d love your help,” Marie declared.
Jordan paused before sighing. “Just don’t run off again.”
I agreed. “So, you’re looking for a way in?”
Marie nodded. “But we can’t get past those two without causing a scene.”
If I had my powers, solving that would have been easy but I was on my own. I glanced at the two burly guards and cocked my head.
“Did you try flirting?” I asked.
“No, and don’t even think about it,” Jordan threatened.
I turned to her. “You’re jealous about a suggestion?”
Jordan shrugged and Marie chuckled.
“Fine, that’s off the table.”
“Do you know a teleporter?” Marie asked.
“Well, there’s Gia Sharpe from Beta Ro but she’s probably inside already,” I offered.
Jordan started rolling her eyes but paused and grinned when she saw something. “That might not be necessary.”
Marie and I followed her gaze and I gasped when it landed on Justine and Renee. The two were standing on a nearby green and Justine was trying to direct Renee to hold the camera to really capture her dismayed expression. I slid behind Marie and put my head down.
“What’s wrong?” Marie asked.
I huffed. “It’s Justine.”
“Do you two have issues besides what she did to Emma?” Jordan asked.
“Sort of. She and her friend tried to rush Si Chi and after everything with Emma, I couldn’t let that happen,” I explained.
“And?” Marie prompted.
“And, I explained my concerns to the other sorority presidents, including Sydney and none of them wanted to promote her behavior.”
Marie smirked and Jordan’s grin deepened.
“You blackballed that bitch from every sorority?” Jordan teased.
“No, I just gave the other presidents information I thought they could use,” I defended.
“That’s pretty badass, Y/N,” Marie stated.
I smiled as my stomach flipped. “Anyway, I know that she doesn’t know that I did it but I have a feeling that she would take any opportunity to make me look bad.”
Jordan glanced at me for a second before turning her gaze back on Justine. Jordan’s jaw clenched and there was a new glint in their eyes that only appeared right before a fight. As she started approaching them, I moved to stand next to Marie.
“What are you doing?” Marie whispered.
“Causing a distraction,” Jordan called over her shoulder.
I gulped and stared as Jordan called Justine before delivering a right hook to her jaw. Justine stumbled for a second before straightening up, her jaw askew. She snapped it back into place with a flick of her hand and hissed something back at Jordan. Seconds later, Jordan was beaming in the middle of a full-on brawl.
“Does Jordan always get like this when they fight?” Marie asked.
“Yes. One time, they almost got us kicked out of a club because they sent a group of guys to the hospital.”
“Almost?”
“Cate.”
“Oh.”
I smiled as Jordan dodged one frat boy’s sloppy left side kick only to spin him to collide with another frat boy that was approaching her from behind. “They look really good when they fight, though.”
Suddenly, the guards rushed past us, and Marie grabbed my arm.
“Let’s go before you start drooling.”
Victoria’s makeshift green room was immaculate and complete with various notes for the town hall and water bottles and snacks. She also looked immaculate in her navy-blue suit and perfectly coiffed dark hair. Her eyes were wide, eerily wide, and it felt like she saw everything. Those eyes watched Marie with intensity as she explained everything with the Woods and handed over the drive.
Victoria rubbed her thumb over the device and pursed her lips. “What you just expressed to me is a serious matter. Have you told anyone else?”
“We don’t trust anyone else,” Marie answered.
“Understandable.” Victoria’s slow head nod made my blood boil and I didn’t know why. “Of course, I will get this into the right hands as soon as possible.”
“And we won’t get in trouble?” I asked.
Victoria faced me. “Of course not. If anything, you and your friends should be heralded as heroes. However, I understand your concerns and appreciate your courage in coming to me.”
I nodded stiffly. “Thank you for your time. You probably have plenty of other last-minute town hall things to do.”
“Yeah, thanks for listening,” Marie agreed as she stood.
“I do but, I also wanted to speak with Marie for a moment, alone.”
Her words made my heart rate pick up and I could hear several alarms going off in my head. Something was off with Victoria but I didn’t know what and I couldn’t just drag Marie out of there with no explanation.
I turned back to Marie, and she nodded. Slowly, I stood and one of Victoria’s assistants guided me out of the room. I couldn’t stop myself from pacing up and down the hallway. There was no telling what they were talking about, and I hated not knowing.
If only---
No, that won’t be helpful. I just had to be patient and wait for her.
But patience was hard when my gut felt so uneasy like it was on a rocking boat. I’d never met Victoria until then and I knew Coco thought she was an acceptable candidate. So, I had no cause to feel the way that I was feeling.
Maybe it was paranoia or stress; both were known to make people perceive things differently.
But my intuition was never wrong.
Finally, Marie walked out of the green room, her eyes wide but she seemed okay.
“Hey, are you okay?” I asked.
“Yeah,” she confirmed.
As soon as we were out of earshot, Marie started rambling but I got the gist: Victoria was a supe with the exact same powers as Marie, she and Marie were both in the same facility as kids, and Victoria was Marie’s benefactor.
“She even told me about how she can see people’s internal organs and that it happens when you focus enough,” Marie gushed.
“That’s cool,” I mused.
The sunlight was refreshing when we got outside but it didn’t distract from the rowdy protests in front of the union. Each “Supe Lives Matter” sign made me cringe but both sides were extremely passionate. It was hard to understand why people loathed finding a middle ground so much.
“What’s wrong?” Marie asked.
“Nothing, I’m glad that we handed over the information and she was receptive,” I stated.
Marie frowned. “You’re holding back.”
The last thing I wanted to do was start a fight and I could already feel the roots of tension appearing.
“I just…I don’t have a good feeling about Victoria,” I confessed.
Marie paused in her steps and I hesitated before facing her. “What do you mean? She was our best option and she’s the one who got me in here, she can’t be that bad.”
“I know and I’m not saying she is, I just feel like something’s off.”
“Don’t start that self-sabotaging bullshit,” Marie warned.
“I’m not. You and Jordan want me to be honest and that’s what I’m trying to do. I can’t ignore my gut, Marie.”
Marie opened and closed her mouth several times. The furrow between her eyebrows was deeper than usual and I wished that I knew the best thing to say. It was difficult to tell my girlfriend that I was happy that she knew who her benefactor was but that I was also suspicious of said benefactor.
“Let’s go find Jordan,” Marie muttered.
I quietly agreed and followed Marie to the protest area since that’s where most people were. Even though I saw a couple of Greek Life people I knew, I couldn’t find Jordan.
It’s hard to say what exactly started it but in an instant, I was caught up in a sea of protestors pushing and shoving each other. Then, the shoves turned into punches and kicks. I saw several teeth get punched out of heads and people resetting their broken noses before going back in for more. All I could do was my best to dodge all the mayhem and in it, my stomach sunk when I realized that I’d lost Marie.
“Marie? Marie!” I called.
I thought I was being loud but I quickly got drowned out by the yells and grunts of the protestors. A burly jock lunged for me but I grabbed the back of his collar used the momentum to send him flying into the people behind me. I kept trying to call for Marie but got distracted by all the jostling.
Breathe, just breathe, Y/N, I thought.
Then, someone grabbed the back of my right arm and yanked me through the crowd. I yelped at the strength but couldn’t fight back as I was finally pulled to a fairly clear sidewalk. The same someone grabbed my shoulders and turned me to face them and I sighed when I made eye contact with Marie.
“Are you okay? Did anyone hurt you?” Her eyes frantically searched my face and she felt all over me for any bruises. “You have some blood on your dress.”
I gasped. “Is it mine?”
Marie shook her head and hugged me.
“There you two are, we’ve gotta get out of here!” Jordan rushed as he approached us.
Marie and I pulled away and trailed after Jordan. After a few minutes, we stopped at a clear green and I slumped against a tree.
“You didn’t get in trouble for the fight?” Marie asked.
“They didn’t catch me,” he said with a wide smirk. “How did things with Neuman go?”
“Good, she actually listened to us and said she was going to hand over everything to the proper channels.”
Jordan nodded. “Did she say what would happen to Shetty?”
“She wasn’t sure but probably firing,” Marie reported before glancing at me.
I huffed and pushed myself to lean straighter against the tree.
“How long will it take?” Jordan asked.
“She didn’t say,” I answered.
“But, she’ll do it; she actually wants to help, Jordan,” Marie insisted.
Then, Jordan looked at me and I glanced down at my shoes.
“What’s going on with you two?” he asked.
“Y/N’s suspicious of Victoria even though she’s willing to help us,” Marie said.
“I just have a bad feeling and I was trying to be honest,” I defended. “Plus, Jordan brought up a good question. She never gave us a timeline or the names of those she would be speaking with. There are kids still down there.”
“I’m sure Victoria will be as quick as possible. If she was willing to help me, she must be willing to help others.”
“Wait, what?” Jordan asked.
“Victoria’s my donor,” Marie explained.
“That’s amazing.” Jordan paused and looked at me. “I’m not gonna pick sides or anything but, you both have good points. Neuman is our best option to expose the Woods and have people listen. Y/N has sensitive intuition, and she might be picking up on something. But, no one should be fighting right now, especially since we just made up.”
“I didn’t mean to start a fight,” I pleaded.
“It’s not a fight, it’s a disagreement and I’m okay with dropping it for now if you are,” Marie offered.
I nodded.
“Good.” Jordan stepped closer to me and frowned. “You got caught up in the brawl.”
“I don’t think it was long, though, and I’m not hurt. Marie found me but I was able to evade several people; I even threw a guy further into the crowd.”
Jordan smiled. “That’s my freshie.”
I didn’t have long to bask in the praise since my vision was overrun with the clearest image I’d had in a long time. Cate was standing in Shetty’s pristine living room and the older woman was cowering against the wall, eyes blown wide with fear and shaking her head.
“Cate, please, don’t do this, you don’t have to do this,” Shetty’s voice echoed.
“Yes, I do, you gave me no other choice.” Cate’s voice was hollow and her eyes were bloodshot. Then, my gaze fell down to her hands and in one, she held a sizable butcher knife.
When I blinked, Jordan, Marie, Emma, and Sam were looking back at me. I flinched a little.
“Do you zone out a lot?” Sam asked.
“No, Y/N just had a vision,” Emma replied with a grin.
I slightly nodded and pushed myself off the tree. “We need to get to Cate, now.”
Shetty’s house was as pristine as any college dean’s would be: the houseplants throughout the house accentuated the ivory and pastel décor and the scent of chamomile filled the house. The space in itself oozed serenity but I felt my skin buzzing as I traipsed through the house with my friends.
Just like in my vision, Cate was standing in the living room, her back facing us. Across the room, Shetty cowered against the wall and kept trying to crawl to no avail.
“Cate, what’s going on?” Jordan asked.
When she turned to us, everyone else gasped except me. Cate’s pupils were dilated, and her eyes were redder than I’d ever seen them. Her arms rested at her sides and the butcher knife glinted in one of her ungloved hands. Cate’s loose posture would have been more concerning if I hadn’t seen what I saw.
“You were fast,” Cate commented.
“We were on our way when you called me,” Marie shared.
“I caught a glimpse of what was going on and thought we should all talk,” I added.
Cate smiled and walked over to me. “Your powers are back, that’s amazing.” She went to grab both of my hands, but I flinched.
“Thanks,” I muttered.
“Y/N, please, help me,” Shetty pleaded.
Cate whirled towards her. “Shut up! Only speak when I tell you.”
Shetty immediately closed her mouth but nothing Cate said wiped the terrified expression off the dean’s face.
“Cate, I think you pushed too much. Why don’t we sit down and you tell us what’s going on?” Marie offered.
“Also, where’s Andre?” Jordan asked.
“He had to go into the city and I feel perfectly fine. I realized that it wasn’t my powers that were making me sick, it was the prescription Shetty gave me,” Cate stated.
“What?” Emma asked.
If the prescription Cate took for her headaches somehow dulled her powers, then that meant…
“She gave you suppressants,” I concluded.
Cate nodded. “Exactly.” She turned away and started walking towards Shetty. “When Indira came home, I got her to admit to everything she’s been doing. Plus, the clips I saw from the town hall inspired me. We’ve been letting non-supes control us for far too long. They’re just scared of us because they know we should be the ones running things.”
While Cate was partly right about some non-supes being scared of supes, that didn’t mean the answer was to subjugate all of them. The situation was worse than my vision led me to believe and I wracked my brain for the best words.
“Cate, you don’t have to do this. We gave over all the information to Neuman and she’ll get it out soon,” Marie offered.
“Yeah, all of this will be exposed and Shetty and everyone else involved will face the repercussions that they should,” Jordan added.
Cate seemed unimpressed as she glanced at the knife in her hand. “That’s too good for Indira.” She faced the woman. “You brainwashed me and made me believe I was helping Luke when I was part of the reason he died. I should have reported you as soon as I got suspicious.”
Shetty shrunk away from her as much as possible and made some sort of noise behind her closed lips.
“Cate, that’s enough,” I tried.
The blonde turned to me. “Don’t you want to know why she wanted us to stay so close? Just ask and I’ll make her say.”
“You don’t have to do that, Y/N,” Jordan said.
“Yeah, it’s fine,” Emma voiced.
As I stared at the petrified dean, my curiosity didn’t matter. What did matter was that Cate was unhinged and I had to talk her down. She didn’t have her gloves on, which meant that she could peek into any of our heads at will. The best solution was to keep my head as clear as possible.
I took a deep breath and did my best to sweep away any annoying thoughts.
“I appreciate the thought but it’s okay. I don’t care about that anymore; I care about you.” I approached Cate like a zookeeper would approach a tiger. Her eyes never left mine and I forced myself to relax as I grabbed her free hand. “I’m still hurt by what you did but that doesn’t mean I hate you; none of us hate you. You’re one of my best friends and I know you have good intentions and Shetty took advantage of that.”
Cate nodded and breathed. “She did.”
“Yeah. So, why don’t we get out of here and let the police or whoever’s in charge of taking down people like her do their jobs? We can go get milkshakes at Vought-a-Burger if you want.”
Cate paused for a moment and mulled over my words. My heart rate felt like it raised with each passing second. Then, she eyed me. “Thanks for trying, Y/N but this is for your own good.”
“Cate---”
“Indira, tell Y/N what your plans were for her,” Cate cut me off.
Shetty sat up and responded, “Upon receiving your application and seeing your powers, my plan was to admit you into the school but admit you to the Woods before the end of your first semester.”
“What?” The word felt like it was punched out of me and I took a step away from Cate.
Shetty continued, “A future probability supe with a ten percent margin of error is too dangerous. There is no way of predicting any of your moves or motives and I wanted you sedated and monitored. But Brink stopped me just before sending out acceptance letters; he insisted that you were much more useful in the classroom than you were in a lab.”
My stomach churned as I kept backing away from Cate, whose gaze never left mine, and Shetty. I could feel my neck and shoulders tense and I suddenly felt lightheaded.
“Stop,” I requested.
“Keep going,” Cate instructed.
“Cate, stop!” Emma pleaded.
“She needs to hear this.”
“I disagreed with him but set up check-ins with you in an attempt to get his perspective. On first impression, I knew that you were intelligent but anxious and you had no malintent in your power use. I paired you with Cate as a peer mentor because I knew she would be able to keep a close eye on you and make sure you were taking your medicine without being suspicious,” Shetty articulated.
“Did you put me on power suppressants too?” I asked.
“Partly. In each session, I made sure to play upon your insecurities, which would heighten your anxiety. You had so much self-doubt that your attempts to strengthen your powers were limited. Also, the medication I gave you only included a minimal amount of anti-anxiety medication. It also included power suppressants that dulled your abilities but not so much that you would notice.”
For a year and a half, I aired out all my insecurities, fears, goals, and grievances with Dean Shetty. She’d always made me feel secure in her office and was quick to offer advice. She listened every time I cried about my parents and gave me ginger tea after each episode. The fact that she’d been manipulating me and drugging me this whole time made it feel like the floor fell out from under me.
When I remembered she wanted me committed underground, I had to take really deep breaths.
She never cared about me or Cate; we were the enemy. Everything we told her was just more ammo that she could use.
“You never helped me; you almost made me worse,” I hissed.
“You’re too dangerous, all you supes are! It’s just a matter of time before you kill us all!” Shetty snapped.
“So, you kill us first?” Jordan shot back.
Shetty didn’t respond but glared defiantly at Jordan.
“She’s the enemy, Y/N, they all are. We can’t let them control us anymore,” Cate insisted.
“But hurting her doesn’t make us any better,” I whispered.
Cate nodded slowly. “I’m sorry you feel that way.”
She turned on her heel and walked back over to Shetty and I couldn’t take my eyes off the knife.
“Cate, wait, I get that Shetty’s deplorable, but she isn’t worth killing,” I pleaded.
That and all my other pleas fell on deaf ears as Cate walked over to Shetty. She turned to me and glanced at the others behind me, all were similarly asking her to stop.
“Slit your throat, Indira,” Cate ordered, handing the butcher knife to Shetty.
The woman easily accepted it and obeyed the commandment in one swift motion. The gurgling noises were the worst and my hands slapped across my mouth as I forced myself to take deep even breaths. Then, Marie brushed past me, gently pushing me closer to the others as she approached Cate.
Marie stretched a hand towards Shetty but Cate grabbed her arm.
“Cate, let me help her,” Marie insisted.
“I can’t do that. This is what she deserves,” Cate said slowly.
For a moment I froze. Part of me wanted to lunge forward and free Marie and the other wanted to get as far away from the bloody scene as possible. Either way, I knew that I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the life slowly draining from Shetty’s.

The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the blood around my mouth. The coppery taste made my stomach lurch as I sat up and touched my mouth.
At least it was dried blood.
The second thing I noticed was the dejected expression on Cate’s face as she sat up on the couch across from me. She stared down at the ground, but she wasn’t looking at anything. For a second, I started to reach a hand towards her but stopped when I remembered what she’d done.
Just as I set my hand back in my lap, Marie and Jordan jerked awake, making me flinch in the process. It wasn’t until I settled a little that I noticed they were flanking me, and I looked down at my lap to hide my wide smile and warm cheeks.
“Is this real?” Marie asked.
“Yes, this is real,” Cate confirmed.
Immediately, Jordan jumped to his feet and shifted to their female form. They grinned so widely at the result that their dimples showed and Marie visibly relaxed next to me. Then, I noticed Marie glance at me.
Maybe if it worked for Jordan…
I took a deep breath and tried to focus on what else would unfold in the day. Instead of a picture, all I saw were hazy black and gray figures in my mind and it felt like my brain had hit a wall. I swallowed the lump in my throat and shook my head.
“Really?” Marie asked, placing her hand on top of mine.
“Don’t worry about it,” I muttered, slowly pulling my hand away.
“I’m sorry, Y/N, your powers should come back soon,” Cate voiced hoarsely.
I thought I nodded as I slowly moved to my feet. “I’m gonna go clean myself up.”
“Do you need any help?” Jordan offered.
“No, I got it.”
After a few minutes of wandering through Dusty’s house, I found a semi-clean bathroom and locked the door as soon as I walked in. The faucet handles were slippery, and it took a few tries before I finally got the water running. When I reached for the paper towel roll on top of the toilet, I realized that my hands were trembling.
“Stop it, Y/N, calm down,” I hissed. “There’s nothing to worry about.”
Don’t cry, don’t cry, don’t cry ran through my head like a mantra as I patted my face with warm water.
“I do not need my powers to be myself,” I muttered. “I’m still me even if I can’t see potential future outcomes.”
Or help my friends or loved ones or pass any crim classes or get a job as a supe.
Then, I was thankful that the running water drowned out my sobs since I wasn’t sure how much of a noise blocker my hand was. I almost collapsed over the sink as my back shook with sobs and the hot tears ran down my face.
No matter how much I wanted to stop crying, I couldn’t. It was like all those years of holding it back made me incapable of doing it in the moment.
Why did this happen to me? Why do I have to get screwed over all the time? bitterly ran through my mind.
I never did anything to Cate to deserve this, nothing at all and she wiped me twice without thinking of the consequences. Wiping two days’ worth of memories from four people’s minds must have been a first for her. There was no telling what that could have done to her powers, and she still did it.
I don’t know why my brain decided that was the time to remember Cate’s playful smile when she talked me into sneaking off campus with the others or her sincerity when I processed my feelings about Jordan and Marie with her. My chest ached and it wasn’t like I had a chest cold----it was almost like I took a direct blow from Luke, but it ached worse than that.
None of Cate’s actions made sense at the moment. Shetty must have put in a lot of effort to manipulate her because she was my friend, almost like the big sister I never had. When I really thought about it, Cate was one of my most attentive friends. Whenever I was stressed or anxious, Cate would take me to her favorite campus green to meditate; when a creepy guy approached me at a party or club, Cate was one of the first people to intervene; and she always insisted that I joined her, Jordan, Andre, and Luke for study groups.
I had to know how she could go from that to rendering me powerless. As I finished cleaning the blood from around the left side of my mouth and nostril, a sinking feeling came over me.
If Shetty could do that to Cate then what had she done to me?
Knock! Knock!
The sound made me jump and shook me out of my stupor.
“One second!” I called, frantically wiping at the other side of my face.
As I stared at my reflection, I internally winced at my red, puffy eyes. It would take at least three rounds of Peter Thomas Roth under eye masks and endless eye drops to remedy them.
“I just wanted to check on you,” Marie’s voice softly called.
I almost froze and huffed.
“Oh, I’m fine.” I sniffled and wiped at my nose.
“I’ll believe you when you open the door.”
Did Marie have some sort of fixation with seeing me at my worst?
“Seriously, you can go back to the others,” I tried to insist.
“If you don’t, I will break down this door.”
“You wouldn’t do that.”
Marie paused. “Jordan would.”
I huffed and threw the used tissues and paper towel in the trash can. After taking three deep breaths to calm myself, I unlocked the door and let Marie in. She immediately entered the room, forcing me to back up. Slowly, her hands grabbed the sides of my face, and she looked me over, eyes softening at the bits of blood I hadn’t been able to clean.
Then, I carefully grabbed her hands and started pulling away. “You don’t have to get that close to see that I’m fine.”
“Oh, I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable,” Marie apologized, then, she frowned. “Actually, no. After everything you said, you pushed me and Jordan away and ran as soon as we woke up; it’s confusing.”
I sighed and turned away from her as I grabbed more paper towel. “I’m sorry. After everything that happened when we were in Cate’s head, I didn’t want you or Jordan to see me like this…again.”
As soon as I turned towards the sink, Marie stepped in front of me and gently took the paper towel out of my hands. She gestured towards the toilet, and I sat on the seat as she wet the paper towel in the sink. After a few seconds, she turned off the faucet and leaned down in front of me.
Marie’s gaze was laser-focused as she cleaned up the rest of my face. The silence in the space was comfortable but I couldn’t stop fidgeting with my braids as she worked.
“When are you gonna understand that Jordan and I don’t care if you don’t look perfect all the time?” she finally uttered. “They just told you how we’re all messy in our own way and it’s okay that you’re a part of it.”
“I didn’t think I had any more tears left in me but I guess I was wrong,” I muttered with a shrug.
Marie hummed in response as she continued gently wiping my face. A few more seconds passed until she was finally done.
“Finding you and Cate scared the shit out of me,” she stated. “It felt like the ground fell out from under me and I had no idea what to do. Jordan had the idea of slowing down your heart rates and it worked but, I’m scared to think what would happen if it didn’t.”
“But it did work because you have amazing powers.” I grabbed her hands. “You saved me, and Cate and I know you’ll save more.” Then, I let go of her hands. “Well, not know-know.”
“Hey, you’ll get your powers back. We’ll figure something out,” Marie insisted.
“But what if we don’t” hung on the tip of my tongue and I didn’t let it fall out. Instead, I watched Marie throw away the dirty paper towel and then she grabbed my hands.
“It’s okay to let us help you,” she said.
“But, you’ll get tired---”
“I won’t and I know Jordan won’t either. People take care of each other in relationships.”
I looked down at our clasped hands. “That’s all…new for me.”
Marie squeezed my hands. “Me too but, I know the basics.”
Having a loving family must have been nice; at least Marie had a normal baseline for how to be in a relationship. Then, I realized that she kept looking at me.
“What? Is there something else on my face? Did my eyes get worse?” I rambled.
Marie laughed. “No, your face is fine; pretty.”
My cheeks warmed at her words, and I couldn’t keep the grin off my lips. Then, I felt myself lean towards Marie and she quickly closed the gap. Her lips were slightly chapped but mostly soft against mine. As I pressed my lips against hers, I let go of Marie’s hands and tangled my hands in her twists. Marie’s hands ghosted up my hips and underneath my cardigan, pulling me closer to her.
I sighed at the feeling but didn’t stop kissing her. Somehow, Marie didn’t break the kiss as she stood, pulling me to my feet and running her hands up and down my back.
I could have stayed like that for a while but a scream followed by banging interrupted.
“SAM!” Emma yelled.
We broke apart and I grabbed Marie’s hand and tugged her out of the bathroom with me. When we got to the living room, it was a mess. On one end of the room, Jordan and Andre were picking themselves off the floor and trying to avoid all the broken glass and other furniture casualties. On the other end, Sam held a weak Cate up against a wall that already had a sizable hole in it. Based on the dust on Cate’s clothes, Sam had attacked her.
Emma stood behind Sam, eyes wide but her voice calm. “Sam, it’s okay, you can let her go.”
“She hurt you---she made you forget,” Sam griped.
“But I’m okay now, everyone is okay now. You can let her go, she’s not going to hurt anyone else.”
It was hard to gauge how much I agreed with the last part of Emma’s statement, but I doubted Cate would go after one of us again soon. Slowly, Sam let her go and Cate collapsed on the ground, gasping. Marie hurried over to Cate’s side to help her up and Sam backed away from them, eyes still boring holes in the top of Cate’s head.
My eyes flitted to Emma, who seemed a little more relieved, and ran a hand through her messy hair.
“Why is your hair that messy?” I asked.
“What is it with people asking me that today? Why is your lip gloss smudged?”
Then, Jordan turned to me and raised an eyebrow. “Great timing, freshie.”
I thumbed at my lips and my cheeks warmed even more. “Get your head out of the gutter. Anyway, what brought you two back here?”
Emma straightened up. “We were looking for you guys because I wanted, well, actually, Sam has something he would like to say.”
Then, Emma gave Sam the same look her mom gave her when she needed her to improve on a take. Suddenly, Sam’s shoulders slumped, and he pouted as he gazed at the tips of his dirty sneakers.
“I’m sorry for almost killing you guys…twice. I’m working on getting better control of my emotions but being locked up for eighteen years really screws with your head,” Sam stated.
The silence that followed was almost unbearable. Cate’s eyes never left Sam as if she was waiting on him to pounce again; Marie frowned; Andre’s jaw clenched so hard that I wasn’t sure he would speak for a while; and Jordan cocked her head to the side.
Finally, Andre said, “You didn’t almost kill us.”
“Fifteen more seconds and he might have,” Jordan admitted.
“My head is still sore from the last time we met but I’m willing to move forward if you stop attacking us on sight,” I added.
“I’m really sorry about that. You’re Y/N, right? Emma talks about you all the time,” Sam commented.
I grinned. “Oh, really?”
Sam nodded. “Yeah, she was saying that you’re great but clueless about relationships and----”
Emma patted Sam’s chest. “Okay, Sam, that’s enough. We don’t have time to talk about that because of the other thing.”
I narrowed my eyes at Emma. “Clueless, seriously?”
She smiled sheepishly and I sighed.
Unfortunately, Emma wasn’t fully wrong, but she didn’t have to tell Sam that. Besides, I was working on it.
For the next few minutes, the two filled us in on everything that was going on in the Woods. How Shetty had Dr. Cardoza experimenting on supes and how several people Sam knew down there got sick. Even though most of them got better, a couple died.
“And they never experimented on you?” Andre asked.
“Not the way they did with Tommy. He was super messed up but a funny guy. One day, they took him away for a session with Cardoza and I never saw him again,” Sam recalled.
“And Shetty knows about all of this and is doing nothing to stop it?” Marie confirmed.
“She hates supes; she wants us all dead,” Sam griped.
Cate shook her head. “That…that can’t be true. Indira always helped me and Y/N.”
Jordan glared at her. “Come on, Cate. Shetty manipulated the shit out of you because she knew we were getting too close.”
“And I want to know why she wanted the two of us to be so close,” I added.
Cate bit her bottom lip and played with the hem of her sweater. “This…this is a lot.”
I nodded. “But it sounds like they’re working on a virus that targets supes. Based on what Sam described, maybe they picked strong supes that weren’t as useful as Sam to be guinea pigs.”
“So, they come up with a virus to kill all of us?” Andre asked.
“I don’t know if that’s the goal, though. Vought has invested way too much money in making supes and if all the GOD U students dropped dead, that’s the next lineup of the Seven gone,” Jordan interjected.
“And society is built around supes, and the fallout would be bad,” Marie said.
“But if Shetty hates us so much, she wouldn’t care,” I thought.
“How is she getting away with this when Vought watches everything? She has to report to them all the time,” Jordan wondered.
Since Brink died, Shetty had to have even more people working under her than before. It would be easy to have certain people cover up for her or maybe the woman was gifted at hiding heinous plots. Seeing how much effort she put into manipulating Cate, there was no telling how far Shetty was willing to go to hide the Woods.
“Shetty could lie on the reports; it’s not like Vought reads through everything carefully,” I pointed out.
“So, what do we do?” Emma asked.
At the moment, I wished that I had my powers. It would have made it much easier to come up with a plan. Instead, I didn’t try but racked my brain for ideas.
“I can help here,” Cate announced.
Everyone turned to her in unison, and no one looked confident. In all honesty, Sam seemed to be contemplating going after her again; Emma looked as though she wished Cate would stop talking; Andre somehow clenched his jaw more; Marie side-eyed her; and Jordan’s glare almost made me feel bad too. I tried to relax my shoulders and forced myself to listen.
“I know that no one trusts me right now but, I am the only one with a direct line to Indira,” Cate said. “Please, just let me try.”
“How do we know you won’t turn on us again?” Andre asked.
“I won’t, I promise,” Cate insisted.
“Yeah, well, your promises don’t mean shit to me right now,” Andre hissed.
“I agree with Andre; after this, anything’s possible,” Emma said.
Cate hesitated and turned to me. “Y/N, please, you know me. I may have messed up but I wouldn’t do it twice.”
A part of me wanted to believe her, really, but the other part was the giant gaping wound of being manipulated so badly that I had no powers. My stomach sunk when I looked at her and I suddenly felt nauseous.
I hugged my arms tightly around my waist. “I don’t know, Cate. I want to trust you again, but it’s difficult.”
Cate’s expression fell and I didn’t know if I wanted to comfort her or scream at her. Everything was so confusing and it didn’t help that I had this gnawing feeling that something else was going on; something that none of us knew.
Marie stepped forward to stand next to Cate. “I think this could be a good first step for you to start earning our trust, but I don’t blame Y/N for feeling how she feels.”
“Same here,” Jordan agreed.
I smiled at their words and had to fight to keep myself from crying even more.
After some deliberation, we decided that Cate, Andre, Marie, Jordan, and I would focus on getting Shetty to expose her plot while Emma helped Sam hide from Vought or Shetty or whoever he’d upset.
That decision led me to leaning against the wall in a booth at an off-campus diner. It was fairly quiet, save for the handful of families laughing with their kids and the game that was on the outdated TV perched on a corner stand. Even though there was a giant plate of fries and greasy burgers on the table, barely anyone ate. I couldn’t stop staring at Cate, who was on her phone in the front corner of the restaurant.
“Can anyone hear anything?” Andre asked.
“No,” Marie said.
“And she’s not even facing us so we can’t even try lip reading,” I muttered.
Marie turned to me. “You know how to lip read?”
“Yeah, every crim major does. It’s part of the body language class,” I explained.
Marie nodded slowly. “This school is nuts.”
“We know,” Jordan muttered.
Finally, Cate hung up the phone and wandered back over to us. “I can’t see her yet; she’s in the city all morning.”
“What does that mean?” Jordan asked.
“I’ll have to wait at her house and get her to talk then,” Cate said.
Andre shook his head. “That’s too much time.”
“Did she sound different or suspicious of you?” Marie asked.
“No, she sounded fine. I’m sorry this isn’t turning out how we hoped.”
Based on her slumped shoulders, I guessed that Cate was telling the truth. The situation was both irritating and relieving since my list of questions for Shetty grew every minute and I was itching to ask them, but I was also thankful for a chance to gather my bearings. The thought of confronting her made me fidget since Shetty had helped me a lot.
How could someone be so kind and so hateful at the same time?
“…and stay out of our heads!”
Jordan’s exclamation jerked me from my thoughts, and I watched them shift to their male form and storm out of the diner. Andre ran his hand over his face and started messing with a straw while Cate looked down at her gloved hands.
“I’ll be back,” Marie muttered, slipping out of the booth and trailing after Jordan.
I blinked and turned back to Cate and Andre. “Sorry, what did I miss?”
“Jordan’s pissed because we have to wait at Shetty’s to get any info out of her and we’re on a timer pretty much,” Andre explained.
“This is all my fault,” Cate muttered.
Instead of answering, I dumped a handful of fries on my plate and started using them to make patterns in the ketchup between bites. When I bit into a burger, I almost moaned at the taste.
Either I was ravenous, or this place had decent food.
When I glanced back up, Cate and Andre stared at me.
I swallowed. “I got hungry.”
“You’re not gonna go after your…partners?” Andre asked.
I straightened up and continued munching on a fry. “We never labeled ourselves as anything and Marie’s got it.”
“Well, I’m glad the three of you have figured something out,” Cate offered.
“Thanks, but, I don’t know how much we have figured out.”
With everything going on, I never paused to think about how this relationship would work. In all honesty, I was shocked that I was able to tell Jordan and Marie how I felt and even more when both reciprocated. But I wondered what happened from here. How did we figure that out?
“It takes time,” Cate answered.
I snapped my eyes up to her. “Could you not probe my mind for a second?”
“Sorry, I can’t help it right now.”
Just as I was going to take another bite, my phone buzzed in my lap.
M: Come outside.
I quickly typed back, Omw.
“If I’m not back soon, just get a box for me.”
“Got you,” Andre said.
When I got outside, the chill made me wrap my cardigan tighter around me. Fortunately, Jordan and Marie were just around the corner and it was a short walk. Just as I got around the corner, the two were kissing. It only lasted a few seconds until Jordan pulled away, a smirk on his face, and I imagined Marie had a similar expression.
“What was that about my bad timing?” I called.
Marie turned at the sound of my voice and Jordan’s smirk deepened.
“Don’t be jealous,” he sang.
Funnily enough, I wasn’t jealous the first time I caught them; just shocked and confused. This time, watching them made me smile all over.
I rolled my eyes at Jordan’s words and sauntered over to them. “Please tell me you didn’t make Marie summon me in an attempt to make me jealous.”
“He didn’t make me do anything, but I thought you should be a part of this conversation,” Marie explained.
Then, Marie launched into hers and Jordan’s idea to break into Shetty’s office, find damning evidence of the Woods and the virus, and bring it to Victoria Neuman. The more she talked, the more the uneasiness set in.
“That town hall is happening today so it’s perfect timing,” Marie concluded.
Jordan looked at me expectantly and I glanced at the giant blue and red poster of the political candidate on the side of the building. Politicians had this strange fixation on looking hopeful, trustworthy, and powerful in all their photos. According to Coco, it was one of the most challenging parts of the field. No matter what any politician did, it all seemed fake to me. Maybe it was because I could see what they would really do if they were elected.
Even though I couldn’t use my powers, something about Victoria Neuman seemed off to me.
“Say it, freshie,” Jordan encouraged gently.
“In theory, I think it’s a good idea to get this information to someone with massive influence,” I started.
“But,” Marie said.
“But I have a weird feeling about her, actually, I’ve been having a weird feeling all day now,” I admitted.
“This is our best shot to expose Shetty right now,” Marie argued.
I nodded. “And I’m not saying not to take it. I’m saying I’m not sure how it’ll play out.”
“Is this about your powers?” Jordan asked.
“No, sort of, anyway, like I said, if you want to go rogue, do it.”
“You’d be coming with us too.” Marie reached a hand towards me, and I unfolded my arms to let her play with my fingers.
I sighed. “But I don’t know how helpful I’ll be.”
“This is gonna sound cheesy as hell, but you don’t need your powers to be helpful. You figured out that Cate manipulated you twice and you figured out that their goal in the Woods is to create a virus against supes. And you did all that without your powers,” Jordan pointed out.
“You’re amazing, Y/N,” Marie added.
I smiled and flipped my braids over my shoulder. “If you say so.”
Marie shook her head and Jordan grabbed my other hand.
“So, this may not be the best time to ask but are we…”
“You’re my girlfriend,” Jordan answered.
“Our girlfriend,” Marie corrected.
“She asked me out first.”
“No, I didn’t. I told you I liked you first,” I argued.
Jordan shrugged. “Same thing.”
Marie swatted Jordan’s arm with her free hand. “This relationship isn’t a competition.”
“Said the sore loser.”
Just as they were about to start bickering, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I let go of Jordan’s hand to grab it, ignored his feigned insulted gasp, and swiped through it. Sydney had texted Sasha, Alina, Lydia, and me in our group text.
S:911. Meeting in an hour.
“As much as I would love to continue this, I have to go to Si Chi,” I said, slipping my phone back in my pocket.
“Really? Now?” Jordan asked.
“Emergency meeting and I need time to get ready. I’ll text you both later.”
When I moved to hug Marie, she pecked my lips instead and I flinched. She smiled mischievously and I blinked at her.
“And I thought you were this shy, sweet freshman,” I muttered.
“I learn quickly,” she teased.
I shook my head and turned to Jordan, who immediately pressed his lips against mine, hands roaming all over my back. I was in a daze as he moaned but when one of his hands squeezed my butt, I yelped and jumped away.
“Jordan!” I rasped.
Even though Jordan apologized, he did not look sorry at all. As I sauntered off to get an Uber, I couldn’t help but wonder what I had gotten myself into but couldn’t deny the buzz of excitement at the thought.
Exactly fifty-five minutes later, I sat in the large conference room in Si Chi, freshly showered and made up. The cherry red Ralph Lauren tennis mini dress and white Chanel platforms paired with my braids swept up in a messy bun made me feel exposed but pretty. A minute later, Alina and Lydia waltzed in together. Alina’s hair was in a low bun with pieces framing her face and her black long-sleeved Naked Wardrobe skirt set flowed around her with each step. Lydia wore a deep plum Givenchy blazer over a white Oxford and dark Levi’s, her deep auburn hair fell around her shoulders in soft curls.
Immediately, Lydia took a seat across from me while Alina took a seat on my right.
“Hi, Lydia, Alina,” I greeted.
“Hi, Y/N,” Lydia chirped.
“Hi,” Alina said.
As soon as they sat, Sydney breezed in, her knit white DKNY dress catching the light as well as her diamond studs. She pushed a wavy strawberry blonde tendril out of her face as she took a seat at the head of the table and set her canvas Marc Jacobs tote on the glossy table.
“Hello, girls,” Sydney said.
“Hello, Sydney.”
Our unified voices sent a chill down my spine.
Finally, Sasha burst in, sweat coating her forehead as she quickly took the seat next to Lydia and adjusted her deep green wrap dress. “Sorry, there was a big crowd because of the rally.”
“It’s okay, Sasha. Just remember to factor in big events when you’re commuting for other meetings,” Sydney advised evenly.
Sasha seemed to gulp and nodded.
“That leads me to the topic of this emergency meeting. I know that the town hall on campus is going to be packed and it’s been a hot topic for weeks since it was announced. This morning, all the Greek presidents met and determined that each house will decide their own policy for attendance,” Sydney explained. “I’ve debated this for a while. Our high standards and reputation attract ambitious women and plenty of them will want to attend the town hall. However, I am also concerned about the safety of this event since there is so much opposition on both sides.”
Sydney paused.
“That is why I believe that no Si Chi girl should attend the event,” Sydney stated.
Even though she worded it softly, Sydney was forbidding all of us from attending. If anyone was caught, that would mean an automatic exit from the house.
“It’s especially important for us as leadership to be role models for the initiates. We must choose our events wisely and we don’t want any of them risking anything because of their ideologies or to try to go viral,” Sydney explained.
“It makes sense. Those pro-supes are rowdy,” Lydia agreed.
And ignorant, I thought.
“I’m all for supe rights but I don’t want to be caught in a riot,” Alina added.
“How do we communicate this to the other girls?” Sasha asked.
“Y/N can send something out in the house Discord.” Sydney smiled at me. “You know how to make it tasteful but authoritative.”
As much as I appreciated the compliment, I couldn’t stop thinking of how to persuade her. If I had my powers, this would be nothing but the only thing I had was my wits. The more I thought, the more I was concerned that my wits abandoned me.
“Well, that’s it unless anyone has something to add?” Sydney prompted.
Finally, I had something.
“Yes. I agree that everyone’s safety is important, but I don’t think we’ve thought about the political science majors. Their professors will be all over this and more and more of them want first-hand footage. I think discouraging everyone will put them at a real disadvantage,” I said.
My heart pounded in my ears as I watched the gears turn in Sydney’s head. It wasn’t my best work but it might have made a difference.
“It’s a shame but, they’ll have to figure something else out,” Sydney said.
“Well---”
“Have that done in thirty, okay?”
Sydney’s words were light but her eyes were so intense that my words stopped in my head. I nodded and she dismissed everyone. Sasha grinned widely at me as she stood and walked out.
“I guess your friend will have to figure something else out. With it being junior year and all, it’s even more important that she doesn’t fail anything,” Sasha said.
“Her name is Coco and even though this is an inconvenience she’ll figure something out.”
As confident as I was in Coco, I had no idea what I was going to do. Surprisingly, writing up the Discord message was easy, even though plenty of the girls were upset, it was a simple fix of, “If you’re disappointed, Sydney is more than happy to answer your questions.” However, I wasn’t sure how I was going to tell Jordan and Marie that I couldn’t help them get the information to Neuman.
Of course, the time we set to meet up outside of Shetty’s office arrived too soon and I found myself pacing down the hall, filled with dread the closer I got to Shetty’s office. When I arrived, the door was already open and my heart lurched into my throat.
Oh no, we’ve been caught, this won’t work, I panicked.
Then, I forced myself to take a deep breath and crept closer to the door. It took five more deep breaths for me to get the courage to peek around the corner. At first glance, Shetty’s office looked like it normally did: peaceful but professional. Her space was light and airy with the perfect amount of light from the sun seeping through the windows. However, when I looked closer, there were papers sprawled over her desk, something that she would never stand for.
Just as I started to creep in, Jordan popped up from behind the desk and cursed loudly when she saw me.
“You could have said something, freshie!” Jordan admonished, one hand pressed to her chest and another holding a file.
“Well, I didn’t know who was in here!” I defended, wandering further in. “You should have closed the doors behind you.”
Jordan smirked. “You say that like I’m not the one who taught you how to sneak into places. I would have just told whoever that Shetty needed me to find something.”
“Technically, you all contributed to teaching me that but okay.”
Then, I turned back towards the doors to start closing them when Marie slipped in. We nearly collided but I took a half step back.
“Shit, sorry!” Marie exclaimed.
“It’s fine, I guess it’s my karma.”
I let her slip past me and made sure the doors were secured behind us before joining her and Jordan at Shetty’s desk.
“Have you found anything yet?” Marie asked.
“No, just different files on different kids.”
I perked up. “Like the ones she checks in with?”
“I think so. I didn’t read any because that felt wrong.” Jordan paused. “And don’t go looking for your file; you need to be focused.”
“Fine,” I groaned playfully.
We decided it would be best for Jordan and me to go through Shetty’s physical files while Marie searched her computer. As I skimmed the documents, my brain circled around how I would tell them that I couldn’t go to the town hall. There was no great way to say, “Hey, I can’t help you expose a major conspiracy because my house president said ‘no’ and if I disobey, I’ll be ostracized.” I would find better words but that’s what it all boiled down to.
If only Si Chi and rankings didn’t matter so much.
Then, I paused at a newspaper clipping I found. It was from that plane crash a couple of years back, the one that Queen Maeve and Homelander failed to save. The thought of all those people dying made my stomach churn. As I kept reading, my stomach settled a little and I felt myself buzzing.
“Look.” I set the file down on Shetty’s desk and Jordan stepped closer and Marie swiveled in her chair.
“It’s from that plane crash,” Marie observed.
“Why would Shetty have a file on this?” Jordan asked.
“Because of this.” I flipped through the documents and pointed out the passenger list. “It’s right in the middle.”
After a few seconds of reading, both their eyes widened.
“Holy shit,” Jordan breathed.
“Her kid and her husband were on that plane; that’s why she hates all supes, it makes total sense,” Marie said.
“It’s only motive but, it might be useful for Neuman. But no one’s found anything on the Woods?” I asked.
Marie and Jordan shook their heads.
“Great, this couldn’t get worse,” Marie muttered.
Immediately, Shetty’s office door handle started jiggling and our eyes snapped to it.
“I thought you locked the door,” Jordan hissed.
“No, it would have been suspicious if the door was locked,” I whispered back.
“We don’t have time for this. Hide whatever you can.”
Frantically, we shoved the unimportant files in random drawers, and I kept the one about the plane crash under my denim jacket. Just when the door pushed open, someone dragged me down and I found myself sandwiched between Jordan and Marie underneath Shetty’s desk. It was a tight squeeze, and I didn’t think that I could move if I tried but, I was more focused on keeping my breathing even as someone entered the office.
“Nice digs. I guess this is what you get for screwing over everyone,” a masculine voice drawled.
“That’s Cardoza,” Jordan mouthed.
My eyes widened and I could feel my heart rate pick up. For a few seconds, I couldn’t focus on any of my surroundings, and I couldn’t hear anything either. This shouldn’t have been happening, I took my medicine, I knew I did.
Just breathe, Y/N, and use your exercise.
I see three of Jordan’s rings, I smell Marie’s hair oil, I feel really warm, and----
My thoughts were cut off by Marie grabbing my shoulders and muttering, “It’s okay.”
In the next few seconds, my heart rate slowed down, and I breathed a lot easier. I would have turned to thank her if it would have blown our cover.
For the next minute, Dr. Cardoza ranted about how his medical prowess was misused and how no one was supposed to get hurt.
“It was all for science! But screw science and me, right?” he bellowed.
Then, he got quiet for a second, but it was quickly filled by the sound of something trickling. Since she was in the most convenient position, Jordan poked her head out from her hiding spot only to immediately retract it and shake her head.
I hated where my imagination went.
Finally, the sound stopped, and the man groaned. “Here’s your precious data.”
Something plopped onto the desk, and we all perked up. As soon as the door slammed behind him, we rushed out from our hiding spot. Marie grabbed the USB that Dr. Cardoza dropped and plugged it into the computer. In seconds, we had everything that could expose Dean Shetty and the Woods. Some of the details made me wretch and some things did not need visuals but had them.
It was perfect ammunition.
“Wow,” Marie said.
“How long were they doing all this?” Jordan muttered.
I shook my head, grabbed the file from my jacket, and took pictures of the important parts. “I don’t know if I want to know at this point.”
After Marie grabbed the USB and we put everything else back to normal, we got out of that office as quickly as we could. While we walked down the hallway, my thumbs flew across my phone screen.
“I just sent the pictures to you both,” I said.
“Why? Are you afraid you’ll accidentally delete it?” Marie asked.
Okay, here it goes.
“I can’t go to the town hall,” I confessed.
“Are you scared? No one’s going to do anything, they’re all talk,” Jordan said. “And I wouldn’t let them touch you.”
“Neither would I,” Marie affirmed.
“I appreciate that but, it’s not out of fear. Si Chi girls can’t attend; president’s orders.”
They stopped walking at the same time, and I lagged a little, dreading facing them. At first, they both looked stunned then Jordan looked like she would strangle someone, and Marie was confused.
“That’s bullshit,” Jordan hissed.
“Yeah, they can’t tell you where you can and can’t go,” Marie agreed.
I shifted my weight from foot to foot. “Well, they sort of can. If I go, it’s immediate expulsion from the sorority.”
“But this is important. They have to make an exception,” Marie offered.
“I couldn’t tell them about this. Sydney would get an ulcer at the thought of breaking into the dean’s office and going through private files,” I argued. “Plus, if I told them about any of this, they’d think I’m a crazy conspiracy theorist.”
“This isn’t a conspiracy or a theory; they did this shit and no one did anything about it,” Jordan insisted.
I huffed. “I know that, Jordan, but I also know these girls and they don’t like to leave their comfort zones. Even though Sydney is one of the more progressive presidents, she still has to maintain the standards.”
“Even if it includes covering up Shetty’s plan to make everyone sick?”
I hesitated. “I…I’m not sure.”
Marie groaned. “Come on, Y/N, you don’t have to do every little thing they say. You’re high up in the house, doesn’t that mean anything?”
“Yes, it means more status and respect but also more eyes, so I’m almost double forbidden from going.” I sighed. “I’m sorry but, this is as far as I can go. Text or video call me if you need anything.”
The moment I turned on my heel and started walking away, I understood what a kicked puppy must feel like. I only made it a few steps before both grabbed one of my wrists.
“Stop running,” Jordan said.
“I’m not running,” I argued.
“Bullshit, this whole thing is,” she challenged.
I paused and narrowed my eyes at Jordan. “It might be to you but it’s very important to me. It always has been.”
When I pulled at her hand, Jordan let me go and I turned to Marie, but her expression hardened.
“You don’t have to do this,” she insisted.
I scoffed. “Yes, I do. Vought already gave you their stamp of approval, so you’re set. I have to play it smart, and I can’t do anything to lose Si Chi right now.”
“That’s not fair, Y/N,” Marie said.
“It’s the truth, though. I’m on thin ice with not being able to use my powers and I can’t mess up anything else!”
Jordan stepped closer to me. “The Woods is bigger than anything at this school. Screw rankings, Si Chi, and GOD U. Shetty wants us all dead and you have a chance to stop her. You have a chance to be a hero.”
They were right, this was a fantastic opportunity to help people and make GOD U a better place. We had no idea how many kids were still trapped down there or what they were experiencing. This plot needed to be exposed and everyone needed to be held accountable. At any other time, I would have jumped at the chance to help but I couldn’t.
If only Sydney hadn’t given that order.
I wanted the ground to swallow me up and take me somewhere far away from the two pairs of deep brown eyes that bored into me. I also wanted Marie and Jordan to stop looking at me with such intensity; it just made everything harder.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
“You’re not the only one risking your ranking here, you know. I don’t get why you insist on doing all this shit after everything,” Jordan spat.
I flinched at her tone and swallowed thickly. I knew she was referring to my family and how awful they were. The worst part was I didn’t know why I was like this either.
How could I have made so much progress just to end up back where I was?
Just a few hours ago, I was giggly about having a new girlfriend and partner. Before my meeting at Si Chi, I even made spreadsheets of some dates we could have and gift ideas for holidays and birthdays.
Seeing them both look at me with such hurt in their eyes almost broke me and I wanted to forget about the smug expression on Sasha’s face and Sydney’s tone. But, I just couldn’t.
