Forty years ago, the future looked like this ItalDesign Machimoto, 1986. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro bridging the gap between a car and a motorcycle, based on the chassis and mechanicals of the Mk 2 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V. The name is a portmanteau of the Italian words macchina (car) and motociclo (motorcycle). The saddle-type seating could provide a ride for six passengers normally, or up to nine passengers if they sit in a compact "tandem" fashion. The steering system allowed the driver to choose between a traditional circular wheel or open it up into motorcycle-style handlebars. It was proposed as a "socialising" vehicle for the youth market but went no further than the Turin Motor Show
