Ensis Amabilis character analysis
I’ve decided to analyze NuEul’s characters, starting with Ensis! (Because he’s my favorite.)
Let me summarize the story of Ensis in my own words. (This is not a theory. This is information from NuEul themself.)
Ensis was the first child of an emperor, his younger siblings are twins Parma and Lorica, both 3 years younger than him. They all loved each other very much. Ensis was an intelligent, kind and very gentle person and he was very likable. That was his childhood. But what about his later life?
For years, his parents had been experimenting with black magic on him, trying to make him the strongest being. This was kept a secret from Parma. Ensis and Parma were originally very close and loved each other, even more after Lorica “died”. But because their parents spent so much time infusing black magic into Ensis, he and Parma grew apart.
By the time Ensis was in his 20s, he had enough of black magic and his parents, so he killed his parents. He took his father’s place as the emperor, but he became a tyrant. He also changed his name to Enrique.
Parma rebelled against Ensis and cut his head off. You may not know this, but actually, Ensis was the one who let Parma kill him. Because deep inside he still loved Parma, he allowed Parma to kill him. Though Parma still hated Ensis a lot, revived Ensis as a revenge so he could use Ensis and hurt him. Ensis lost his memories when he was revived.
In the end, Ensis ran away from the empire and lives with Zero (a character who isn’t from NuEul).
Analysis part 1: The tyrant who suffered
We now know Ensis became a tyrant because of what his parents did to him. Though if you watched the Revolution video and understand/translated the Korean words, you may have already knew. I don’t know exactly what he did to the empire as a tyrant.
But what could have caused him to become a tyrant? An out of control emperor, instead of a good one?
Tyrants love power, which is why they have so much of it. Why does Ensis want, or even need so much power over the empire?
His parents have always told him that to be an emperor, he must be stronger than anyone. But Ensis hates his parents, so much that he kills them. But even while his parents were trying to make him strong, Ensis took so long to snap. For years he was powerless against his parents, even though they were making him stronger.
What if it took him a while to realize that with all this strength his parents gave him from black magic, he could use it to backfire on them. So as payback for all the pain they inflicted on him, he kills them. From then on, he feels powerful, so much he becomes a tyrant.
If you eat something delicious, you want to eat more. If you play a fun game, you want to keep playing it until you win all the levels. This is how Ensis feels when he kills his parents and becomes emperor. He feels power, and it feels good, so he wants more.
The Revolution video shows Ensis saying something about ‘removing the fence’ (fence = his parents, fence may or may not have been the exact word because I only found it from google translate), and then having the power in his hands. So this shows killing his parents made him feel powerful.
Ensis kills the two people who put him through a lot of pain for a long time, not to mention they are the rulers of an empire, obviously he feels powerful because of that.
Analysis part 2: The kind brother with regrets
Ensis allows Parma to execute him, because he still loves Parma even though their relationship was ruined. At first, this reason seems simple. However, I think there should be a full reason, or another reason too.
It’s reasonable to be willing to die to save the life of someone you love. However, Ensis went further, he was willing to let his beloved brother kill him.
Parma absolutely hates Ensis. He shows no mercy towards him. Ensis on the other hand, hates Parma too, but at the same time he also loves Parma.
Maybe Ensis thought that because of how much Parma hates him, Parma will be satisfied if he dies. Or, he realized he went too far, but can’t make things right, so he’s willing to die. Either way, Ensis let himself die because of his love for Parma, possibly for Parma’s happiness too. But later we find out Parma wasn’t satisfied and brought Ensis back to life to get revenge on him.
It’s very possible Ensis no longer had faith in himself to rule the empire. After all, he had so much power over the empire, he had a very important job. He could have remembered that he originally didn’t want to be strong and realized all this power wasn’t what he originally wanted, and he was controlling an empire without controlling himself. So he let himself die.
He also might have thought that Parma would be a better emperor, it’s likely he didn’t know Parma was also going to become a tyrant. Perhaps he knew that if he continued being an emperor, a tyrant, he would completely ruin Parma’s life.
Ensis is a gentle and selfless person who is willing to sacrifice himself for the people he loves. Even so, he snaps and does things he wouldn’t normally do if he’s pushed too far.
Knight’s Nights shows how getting revenge makes someone feel and what it can lead them to do. In Ensis’s situation, his revenge (killing his parents), makes him feel powerful, and that feeling of power drives him crazy, which leads him to make the wrong decision.
But he eventually realizes what he did was wrong. Ultimately, what leads him to allowing his death is his love for his brother and, very possibly, this realization.
Sorry if this analysis wasn’t very good, this is my first time writing a character analysis. But I tried really hard to write this, so I hope the effort was worth it.
I’ll analyze the other characters too!

Here is a clue: Ensis and Parma both had similar reasons to become a tyrant.)
