Father of neurology
…Sir William Gowers (1845 - 1915), [was] described by Macdonald Critchley as ‘probably the greatest neurologist of all time’. Sir William Gowers lived in England in the late 19th century, and during his illustrious career was responsible for discovering the first removable spine tumour, inventing the patella hammer, and writing the two-volume Manual of Diseases of the Nervous System (1886, 1888), which is still used today.
-From the journal Brain.
This Father’s Day, we’re tipping a hat to the Father of Neurology, Sir William Gowers. Without his genius efforts, we would know far less about the human brain than we do. Neurologists today are able to accomplish so much by standing on the shoulders of this giant.
