My Korean Icon Contest
When i hear the word 'Korea', it is definitely about it's rich influence when it comes to food! Of all the food Korea has given to the world, the most remarkable/iconic is.... *chachan!* SAMGYEOPSAL (삼겹살)! You'll definitely miss half of your life if you talk about Korea without mentioning 삼겹살~
Samgyeopsal. Literally translated as 삼 (sam) = Three, 겹 (gyeop) = Layer, 살 (sal) = Flesh or Three Layered Flesh. Usually consumed when drinking Soju. Eaten either with lettuce or Perilla leaves. It may sound too unhealthy but the three layered meat is actually balanced with the nutrients coming from the vegies eaten with it and protein coming from the Samgyeopsal itself.
Almost everyone living on Earth love to eat. Exploring new food and dishes is also one of the things almost everyone love to do. Especially Filipinos, we don't just stay at one place, we constantly explore and find something new. There is no doubt why Korean Food is starting to get recognized here in the Philippines.
I chose Samgyeopsal (삼겹살) as my korean icon because it best represent Korea's rich culture and influence. I think, being able to influence other race, culture or nation with your own brand is one of the most successful thing to achieve as a country. By that, i mean that Korea has influenced even the busiest street here. I think Samgyeopsal is perfect for Filipino's taste. Why? Because, i recently conducted an online survey asking questions regarding the intake of Pork meat/belly of Filipinos and all their responses turned out to be positive. Filipinos and Koreans have a major similarity. Both races love to eat side dish/food alongside their intake of alcoholic beverages. Koreans do love eating Samgyeopsal when drinking Soju while Filipinos love Drinking liquor while eating 'Pulutan' (food eaten when consuming liquor). There is this question in my online survey goes: "Is fried pork meat/pork chop/pork belly/ lechon kawali a good 'pulutan'?" Majority of the responses is 'YES'. So therefore, Samgyeopsal is a perfect fit for Filipino's taste buds!
There is a high chance of getting Samgyeopsal as a part of the Philippine's Multi Cultural Environment and it seems that the popularity of Samgyeopsal is starting to rise here in the Philippines. That is the reason why i chose Samgyeopsal as my KOREAN ICON.
