also i hate when nonblack ppl on here use aave to seem “scarier” if that makes sense? like they think a certain way of talking is more intimidating and aggressive and it’s hm, interesting
They always use it to sound 1. More intimidating 2. More reckless 3. Sexually aggressive
Which is all you need to know about what they think of us. That’s my main problem with non-Black people using AAVE. Their use of it mirrors the stereotypes that they associate with us. It makes *our* language seem “dirtier” or inferior because they use it in shitty contexts.
discussion of: how despite her last two albums being audiovisual masterpieces that reference all manner of serious high and low culture, beyonce never gets associated with “art” in any real way whereas lady gaga (whose work is considerably less consistent) got grouped in with the “art” crowd much more because she’s more legible as someone who would be involved with art. that kills me. i dislike how lady gaga can shout that suddenly the koons is her while beyonce is out here creating a whole visual language for herself without getting any like…Art Cred…yaknow

Bob Marley was an activist. He fought for unity of the African diaspora. Making him into a snapchat filter distorts his legacy and turns him into a caricature. There was so much more to Bob Marley than weed. Reducing him to just that is racist.
just saying
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Official Trailer Sneak Peek (2016) Chris Pratt, Denzel Washington Movie HD
Im actually excited for this movie, and not just cause I love Chris Pratt. It actually looks like a good representation of westerns (black, asian, mexican, and indigenous cowboys) and I’m going to see if the actor who’s playing a native american in this is ya know ACTUALLY native american
“Red Harvest” IS ACTUALLY PLAYED BY SOMEONE WHO IS NATIVE AMERICAN. Actor and Model: Martin Sensmeier
Aiight, my ass is sold. I’m going to go see this movie, the representation makes me soooo happy! @anie-duke we gotta see this together!
I wonder if the people who believe that Bruce Wayne’s sole contribution to society is sulking on rooftops and beating up bad guys are aware that in the DCAU Bruce actually owns an apartment complex run by a friendly, kind woman that houses former inmates after they have completed their sentence at Arkham Asylum. Tenants at Wayne Gardens are also eligible for a program that helps them locate jobs, including positions at Wayne Enterprises.
Look, you’ll get no argument from me that at times Batman can be far, far more abrasive and rude than necessary, and there have been adaptions where writers depict him as a macho, hate-fueled machine motivated by his disgust towards the criminals he enjoys beating to the point of hospitalization (rather or not those depictions are accurate portrayals of the character or revenge fantasies on the writer’s part is the subject of another post entirely).
But to me, that’s not what Batman stands for. To me, Batman is a symbol of hope and survival and second chances, and Bruce Wayne’s charitable organizations and efforts towards improving Gotham City are an extension of that. Bruce doesn’t just retreat into the luxury of his manor during the daytime and turn a blind eye to societal problems in Gotham that create the very criminals he fights on a nightly basis–no, he works to improve those conditions so that desperate people don’t have to turn to crime in order to support themselves or their loved ones.
Bruce doesn’t want the front doors at Arkham Asylum to be a never-ending revolving door of the same individuals finishing their sentences only to return and start again because they fall back into old behaviors–no, he wants to provide those recently-released from Arkham with resources and treatment so they’re given the option to start new lives rather than being thrust back onto the streets with nowhere else to go but their former lives of crime.
It’s easy to get distracted by the more exciting aspects of the Batman universe–the costumes, the villains, the awesome Batmobiles–but it’s also important to realize that a lot of the work Bruce Wayne does to help improve Gotham doesn’t take place inside the Batcave.
This is why I love Batman stories that don’t just focus around punching the bad guys, but on how Batman actively works to make the world a better place and reform former criminals. (Hint: You don’t do that by solely putting all the bad guys in jail. It takes a bit more work than that and a lot less machismo.)
can we please talk about how tone deaf and offensive and awful S02E03 of Kimmy Schmidt–aka the one about “Asian American activism” & with Titus dressed as a geisha in yellowface–is????
Like it first of all frame AA activism–and all activism–as unreasonable internet jerks who aren’t interested in a conversation, just in yelling at people
the placing of the “transracial” white guy in the AA group is gross just because a) there ARE transracial asians in real life, such Asian adoptees, and b) the conversation around Asians as just “honorary white people” is unfortunately real and pervasive, and this just perpetuates that
the Asian American audience has dubbed Titus “Hitler” because of course that’s what those easily offended and incendiary activists do
the Asian-American crowd is “won over” by Titus’s performance, and is confused???????
and then they decide that mocking AA activism isn’t enough, they make a punchline out of sensitivity towards Black Lives Matter; the Asian American girl then vaporizes and disappears in a beam of light after she “offends” herself after saying that she can’t breathe
not to mention the presence of non East Asian voices in Asian American groups only there to contribute to the characterization of AA groups (and activists in general) as ridiculously disorganized and unfocused, and prone to exaggerated whining about issues as “silly” as “past lives”
Trivializing AA activism and people is not okay. what the hell????
it trivilaizes asian american activism and also (imo purposefully) pits them against a black man while simultaneously shitting on the idea of respecting the boundaries and distinctions between nonwhite communities. asians shouldn’t be saying ‘i can’t breathe’ in that context because it appropriates from black activism and applying it in that way is equivocating our experiences, which isn’t about 'offense’ but respect and acknowledgement. also drawing the comparisons to hitler? is she even trying or like it’s obvious tina fey was too chickenshit to put a white in yellowface (and has kimmy be the one mentioning that yellowface is fucked up? HAHA YEA OK), and way too many easians are doubtlessly gonna be jumping on tituss burgess rather than directing criticism toward tina fey… anyway it all reads as very calculated to me
If you didn’t get the hint, I really, really hate MCU. I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but what Marvel has done is way too personal for me to be quiet. The one thing I will force upon you with all my heart, is my pure hatred of the Doctor Strange movie. I’m begging you, please boycott Doctor Strange.
What Marvel is doing with this film is inexcusable. I’m Tibetan, and I grew up in America as a child of refugees. My father was a fan of Marvel comics as a child, and one of his favorite stories was Doctor Strange’s, because of his connection to our homeland, Tibet. The Ancient One was a high Tibetan lama who taught Doctor Strange the art of magic. You might think Marvel’s only crime is whitewashing him, but its a lot worse then that. tl;dr Marvel blatantly turned the Ancient One into a white woman, as well as changed Doctor Strange’s original setting of Tibet to Nepal, in order to avoid any involvement with Tibet’s current politics (aka oppression) with Communist China.
The reason my parents are refugees is because of the Chinese genocide of Tibetans. Tibet is a country occupied by China, and is one of the most oppressed countries in the world. You probably don’t know much about it because China’s position as a global superpower as well as the government’s complete control of media and news. There is no freedom of speech in all of China, therefore national censorship is extremely common and no one who isn’t involved really knows anything. China pretends that all Tibetans are happy and they really do not like anyone even mentioning the Tibet situation, especially outsiders.
Marvel knows this, one of their main markets is their viewers in China. China has banned a lot of foreign films for long periods of time because of even slight implications of Tibetan oppression (ex: the Avatar the Last Airbender movie). Doctor Strange could get banned if they included Tibet, meaning millions lost. Why bother risking loosing money from China when you can just whitewash everything to cover it up? This is Marvel’s direct statement that they care more about money then human rights, and I’m honestly not surprised. This has always happened, and it will happen again. Literally no one gives a fuck about Tibetans, I’ve seen it happen all my life. Westerners and the Chinese government alike want to hide our oppression, hide our culture until it makes them money, and hide our millions of deaths and losses. If you do happen to be one of the few who do care, please, please, do not support this film and boycott Doctor Strange.
Repeating myself but of course that reblog was immediately lost in a sea of notes, so….
To everyone trying to explain away the stunning diversity in Star Wars heroines by saying two or three of those characters are related:
Because I apparently need to spell it out: You have to be pretty fucking oblivious to make fun of dudebro fans whining about their “heroes not looking the same” (to quote half the posts on my dash the day Rogue One trailer dropped) when the heroines you’re creaming yourself over actually do look the same. Sooooo IDK maybe try having a tiny bit of self-awareness and consider that female leads don’t always have to be white girl power fantasies??
BUT SINCE PEOPLE WON’T DROP THE ‘RELATED’ ISSUE:
The only character who had to be cast as white was Padme, because Luke, Leia, and Anakin (in ROTJ) were already played by white actors.
Leia was a total blank slate and could have been any race.
Rey** is either a) some random girl who could have been any race or b) the daughter of Luke Skywalker, who - GET THIS - could have been multiracial because there’s nothing that says that jedi master jizz only works inside a white woman.
And Jyn doesn’t appear to be related to anyone so there is literally no reason for her to be white especially when the prior three leading ladies can be summed up like this:
IN OTHER WORDS “they’re related so of course they’re all white” isn’t an excuse so stop trying it.
** Rey is not a Solo or Kenobi-Kryze or any of that bullshit so don’t even start
Not to mention Kylo Ren would have been biracial Black if Han had been Black as originally planned by George Lucas.
