VH1 has just released a first trailer for the previously announced film project The Breaks, set to premiere January next year. Although the film’s title might seem somewhat facile, because of the term’s numerous and rather diverse meanings and allusions not exclusively, but first and foremost in the hip hop context, and the trailer eventually and unnecessarily tilting over into the spectacular, one can (supposedly) look forward to watching this film.

Apart from hiring a substantial part of The Wire’s crew (in front of and behind the camera), the film strives for authenticity, seeking council and expertise of executive music director DJ Premier as well as being loosely based on Don Charna’s excellent book The Big Payback.

The film’s main protagonist is a young and ambitious dj and producer and the set designers gave their everything (I guess) to surround him with worn out crates, TASCAM multitrack tape recorders and obviously E-MU SP 1200s to further consolidate the previously mentioned effort for authenticity – as cheap as this trick may seem, it worked for me! Mass Appeal is not only a very well known Gang Starr song, but also the at times in more than one sense rather fitting title of a New York based media network, founded as a zine in the mid-90s, resuscitated and expanded by Nas in 2013. The once underground magazine is no longer just a glossily printed quarterly, but also a record company (Mass Appeal Records) and a Youtube channel, showcasing different show formats like On The Grind, Time Pieces, Off Tha’ Wall or Rhythm Roulette. The premise of the lastly listed Rhythm Roulette is that a sometimes well known, sometimes less known music producer picks up blindfoldedly, and thus blindly and unknowingly, three vinyl records (or other media formats such as video games) and then produces at least one song by sampling the previously picked records. It is allowed to use additional drums or soundbits as well as further instrumentation, but the essence or root of the composition should stem from one or several of the picked up records. The series or format has been featuring already very prominent producers such as Erick Sermon, Organized Noize or Black Milk and can be described as rather popular. Furthermore, the concept of the show has been repeatedly picked up by fans and viewers and adapted for own videos; a Youtube search of „rhythm roulette“ lists numerous copycats. The latest (November 2015) episode features Large Professor, who not only accepted the challenge, but even imposed his own rule on top of it, going out of his way to sample all three records for one and the same beat.

To the author of these words who is at the same the initiator of RAP CINEMA, it seems rather unclear and obscure if such a thing as the niche genre ‚hip hop documentary film‘ even exists or if identifying and claiming it even makes sense – but, nevertheless, here we are!

RAP CINEMA is striving for these particular documentaries, be it a feature-length film, a documentary short, or an elaborate online video – there is a vivid culture and a fascinating history involved and creative and passionate individuals are capturing it. This platform seeks to assist them in being heard as well as seen.
