VH1 has just released a first trailer for the previously announced film project The Breaks, set to premiere January next year. Although the film’s title might seem somewhat facile, because of the term’s numerous and rather diverse meanings and allusions not exclusively, but first and foremost in the hip hop context, and the trailer eventually and unnecessarily tilting over into the spectacular, one can (supposedly) look forward to watching this film.
Apart from hiring a substantial part of The Wire’s crew (in front of and behind the camera), the film strives for authenticity, seeking council and expertise of executive music director DJ Premier as well as being loosely based on Don Charna’s excellent book The Big Payback.
The film’s main protagonist is a young and ambitious dj and producer and the set designers gave their everything (I guess) to surround him with worn out crates, TASCAM multitrack tape recorders and obviously E-MU SP 1200s to further consolidate the previously mentioned effort for authenticity – as cheap as this trick may seem, it worked for me!
