ventschau is raphael vanoli's second solo album, following bibrax. It comes out on carton records on vinyl, cd, and digital on 26 September 2026
the album takes its name from a small village in northern germany where vanoli stayed on writing retreats between 2018 and 2023. the forest, and long stretches of being alone in it, shaped how the music moves. ventschau is an ode to that love of the forest - poetic and personal, with more room than before for melody, harmony, and song-like shapes. mantra-like figures recur; on several pieces vanoli sings softly into the strings, so breath, voice, and resonance carry as a single sound.
at the core of the record are the "blowing" techniques vanoli has been developing for years - sounds drawn from breath against the strings of a hyperamplified electric guitar, alongside the full range of artefacts and resonances such a guitar can be made to reveal, among them the voice itself, sung through the strings. this is the sound world of the instrument as he hears it, and it has kept opening since bibrax. the spectrum of solo electric guitar widens further here as those techniques share the room with more conventional playing and a broader palette: a fender bass VI, a 12-string electric, and on one piece a steel-string acoustic.
some of the pieces lean into fragility and let it stay. others are epic and densely detailed - wall-of-sound passages that move across the whole frequency range, from the high crispness of an insect world down to sub-low, earthquake-like rumble. all of it is made live, in real time, on a single guitar - which makes the comparison to a classical recital literal rather than figurative: technically, that's what it is.
all the pieces are his, written across those five years, except alti plano, which draws on a traditional bolivian melody. the record was made live to tape in may and august 2023 at electric monkey studio in zaandam, with kasper frenkel engineering. almost everything is analogue, apart from a few pedals. vanoli kept the number of takes low and let the rough edges stay where they fell.

Seamus Cater is an English songwriter, musician and composer, combining these threads, or branches, in different combinations or collaborations. The songs he chooses for solo concerts include self written vignettes and traditional ballads of his native country. Maintaining these songs through time becomes another kind of tradition and work, occasionally repeating, whilst the songs slowly grow their own new threads or branches.
French German composer and guitarist Raphael Vanoli explores roads less traveled on guitar. He creates poetic and stunning musical worlds by using unique ways of playing on his instrument. Today he will present pieces from his upcoming solo album 'Ventschau' + a new work for 3 guitars and the western winds (if they blow that day).
Please respect nature, each other and leave no traces.

From forthcoming 2nd solo album 'Ventschau' After shooting an improvised trio concert with Hanne de Backer on reeds and Casper Van De Velde on drums for the project ' g a b b r o i n g a b b r o ' at Rimlishof, Alsace, France on October 19th '24, at the end of the afternoon the whole crew helped me carry my gear up the mountain to shoot three solo pieces quickly before dinner. After a brief soundcheck Seppe used my rental car to provide lights, we did three quick takes of three of my new instrumental songs.. Guerilla style, ice cold hands, instruments wet from autumnal dew, high adrenaline but so much worth the effort! It was a spiritual almost magical experience to blast my most personal music to date into this valley of the Vosges mountains through a big Bose system (unfortunately you do not hear that fantastic natural echo and mountain reverb on this D.I. recording here) I brought my own music 'home' for the very first time: These are the mountains where I am from, that I know best, where my mother's lineage is from <3 Thank you's: Hanne de Backer for making all possible Seppe Van Grieken: camera, light Oscar Claus: audio recording Grégoire Vanoli: video editing & the whole ' g a b b r o i n g a b b r o ' crew for the love, muscle, patience and good vibes

My second solo album Ventschau is mixed and mastered and i am - looking for a label
It is a continuation of the sonic world of my first album Bibrax, contains more elements of song and melody, is inspired by the ever-abundant welcome and rooting effects that being in a real forest have on me. 12 years after accidentally sneezing over the strings of an electric guitar, the many facets of using blowing techniques on guitar still fill me with wonder and excitement.
A recent try-out concert in Amsterdam was a surreal trip and went very deep, I will never forget that one. My new compositions and new sound came out nicely. I look forward to share this new sound with the world and to play live much, much more again. Greetings, and peace now RV

'Venus by day'<3 - teaser for the upcoming release on Snow in Water Records.
First collaboration - pretty minimal and clear - with my father and a couple of befriended artists that will add their beautiful selves and give depth to this labour of love the coming days.
My father's biggest passion is to build his own telescopes since approx 55 years. He told me about his DIY films of 'Venus by day' since a decade. During scarse visits at my parental house we often ended our evenings stargazing and bottom-line we always talked about Venus.
Venus does not always look 'full' like Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptun and Pluto do, Venus has a crescent and decrescent. If you don't know, you might think you are looking at our moon. Sometimes venues looks like a croissant, sometimes like a half-full moon, sometimes full. That's because the orbit of Venus lies between the earth and the sun. The love planet is fascinating, full of surprises and particularly with the changing seasonal lights these days and our occasional earthly clouds, of stunning beauty.
Initially I intended to produce music for my father's astronomy workshops - for fun - even more happy it turns out this will become a proper audiovisual release.
Stay tuned.
To Love. With LOVE💙

WOLF SOUP
Experimental duo with Richard van Kruysdijk
Armed with a multitude of effect pedals, routed to 10 different guitar amps, multi-instrumentalist Richard van Kruysdijk (Palais Ideal, Music for Speakers) and guitarist Raphael Vanoli (Knalpot) create a 3D landscape that offers views of deep, dark valleys; detailed, intricate sounds and eruptions of bright, shimmering melodies. Pairing unusual playing techniques with extreme sound processing and rich harmonic textures, WOLF SOUP invite the audience to submerge in their world of controlled glitches and intuitive interplay.
