Action for String Quartet (excerpt) Premiere: March 26, 2014 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbus Auditorium "Here I offer a formal piece of new music for string quartet and narrator. The piece requires exclusive use of an extended technique that I developed myself and teach through picture based instructions printed in the booklet. That booklet also contains a process based graphic score orchestrated for two violins, viola and cello, as well as an experimental narrative that is woven throughout the three movements. I crafted the score while riding as a passenger in a moving vehicle. I held multiple pens in my hands and let their tips hover above blank staff paper like a portable seismograph. The friction of all the inconsistencies, bumps and potholes in the road result in a displacement of energy of that travels through the rubber tires, through the suspension of the car, through the passenger seat, through my spine, through my arm and consummate as information on the page.
