Chapter Ten: The Holy Ghost

With Sir Radzig's fate revealed, new questions soon arise.

As a lad Henry would often look for himself in his Pa’s face.

He wondered when he would grow into Martin’s chin, or sprout a beard that could rival his. He’d peer in puddles, pinching the end of his nose and wiggling it between his thumb and forefinger, not recognising his father’s features in his own. As he grew into a man he saw Theresa inherit her father’s nose; watched as Fritz grew the same, slanting brow as his Pa; but Henry’s own father’s face eluded him.

It had taken Istvan, of all people, for him to finally see what he’d been searching for.

He remembers the first time he saw Radzig after the truth was revealed to him. How, suddenly, he recognised the sweep of his hairline; the cut of his jaw; the shape of his own smile. His reflection, which stared back at him not in still puddles, but polished bronze mirrors, had not been spun wholecloth from his Ma. He had been borne of a loving union, the same as every other man of flesh and blood— save Christ Himself.

In Radzig’s face, he could finally see that union realised.

Henry looks for himself once more… this time in the ugly remains of what was his father.

They had not left much of that man for Henry to mourn.

the thing about being bullied for being weird as a kid is that even if you've always embraced being weird your brain is still always looking for the line where it's too much. you can be as proudly and intentionally weird as you want and you can love being weird but your mind is still convinced there's a point where you get too weird and people start treating you like a weird looking bug again. also it feels like you reach that point 500 times a day even if everyone you've spoken to today found you pleasant and likable and even if you're completely alone in your house with nobody looking at you at all.

one argument you often see about fanfiction is that it's like 'training wheels' writing? like 'oh it's fine to do that while you're still learning, it's easier than coming up with your own ideas'. and I have to say I have just never agreed with that.

in my experience it's actually pretty common for newbie fanfiction writers to gravitate towards coming up with OCs rather than writing about the canon characters (hence the infamous Mary Sue); this suggests that many people find that 'easier' than attempting to write about pre-existing characters.

I would say that recreating the characterisation, mood and general vibes of an existing work of fiction is in fact a skill in and of itself that's acquired via practice. A common compliment delivered to fanfiction writers is how well they have captured the spirit of the original work. Inexperienced fanfiction writers fail to do this.

When creating an original character you can, ultimately, say anything about them and now it's canon bcos you created them and you said so. conversely, well, if you are covering a well known song and start playing the wrong notes people will notice immediately.

In addition: a lot of fanfiction, IMO, is in actuality a form of metafictional literary analysis. a story where two characters sit down and talk about their feelings about a canonical event? literary analysis, which is of course a skill. Sometimes fanfiction is bad bcos the writer is not good at interpreting texts.

finally I have made this point before but you never really see anyone suggesting that fictional works based on existing public domain texts are on 'easy mode'. is it 'easier' to write something based on a copyrighted work than a public domain work? Of course it isn't.

I know I said 'finally' but I forgot a point:

A major strength of the transformative work is its ability to create dramatic irony. If a fanfiction's emotional resonance is dependent on being familiar with the source material that's not necessarily a bad thing. sometimes it's a sign that the author has done a really skillful job of engaging with said source material.

Draining her cup and turning, she was not in the least surprised to find the young Lord Capon making his way around the Den, traipsing languidly in his usual manner of a chick who fancied himself a peacock. Although Jan and Dry Devil were by all accounts nobility as well, their demeanor and general affinity for slumming it betrayed nothing of their highborn lineage. The same could not be said of the man whose gold-threaded pourpoint in that moment blinded her with a well-aimed bounce of a stray sunray right into her eye.  All of Lord Capon’s fair, well-formed features came with a generous, slimy coating of a young man’s bravado, amplified infinitely by an obvious awareness of the pleasant angles he cut and the attitude of a someone who’s rarely, if ever, been denied anything in his life – all traits that, when combined, revived the grim specters of some of the worst customers Katherine’d had to serve in her years of covertly snooping in taverns. Under certain lighting, she swore she could see the silver spoon he’d been born with dangling from his mouth.  In short, she did not relish his presence much. “Greetings, goodwife!” Katherine’s eyebrow twitched. Goodwife? “I see I’m not the only one who's bored out of my skull. Having a go at marksmanship, are you?” With a sharp, forceful jerk of her arm, she pulled the bolt out of the center of the target. “Having a go, aye.”
